Episode 9: Delema Sits Poor – Pine Ridge, SD
A disappearance during a snowy walk down a back road. No clear destination. No trace left behind. No answers after all these years. But Delema Sits Poor’s story still echoes and it deserves to be heard.
Episode Summary
In this haunting episode of True Crime Unwind, we journey back to February 20, 1974, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota- a bitterly cold, snow-swept day when 12-year-old Delema Sits Poor disappeared without a trace.
Delema, a young Indigenous girl, was last seen walking along a remote back road in freezing temperatures, accompanied by another 12-year-old. The conditions were unforgiving- high winds, active snowfall, and dangerously low temperatures. Her companion, suffering from frostbite, was forced to turn back and seek shelter. Delema never reached her destination… and hasn’t been seen since.
Despite the decades that have passed and a chilling lack of leads, Delema’s family has never stopped searching for answers. Her case highlights the heartbreaking patterns of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls — stories too often overlooked and underreported.
Anyone with information about Delema Sits Poor’s disappearance can contact the Oglala Sioux Tribe Police Department at 605-867-5111 or report to the Beauru of Indian Affairs Missing and Murdered Unit by texting 847411 to BIAMMU or calling 1-833-560-2065.
