‘What we basically witnessed in Zimbabwe was a situation that was purposely intended to produce an illegitimate outcome that would be in favour of Zanu-PF that was based on the suppression of voters from casting their vote according to their conscience,’ says the chief executive officer of Good Governance Africa.
‘It's about South Africa being asked, listen, get your house in order and actually play this role, where we'll come through you because of your strong financial services sector and actually allow us to get into the continent,’ says public policy specialist, TK Pooe.
‘Those who have benefited from all of the deals that she had flagged as being possibly corrupt, continue to trade with the provincial government and continue to derive benefits from that,’ says Neeshan Balton, executive director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
‘We all know that the US articulation of its values around democracy, accountability, transparency, and how it deals with countries that don't conform to those values of democracy, the free-market system of capitalism, they are punished severely,’ says Lumkile Mondi, senior lecturer at Wits University.
‘I predict nothing much will happen except rhetoric. It's too little, too late and I am always disappointed when the Brics say they're going to do something and they never really do,’ says Patrick Bond, distinguished professor of sociology at the University of Johannesburg.
