27 per cent of Canadian kids report feeling sad or hopeless for long periods of time: UNICEF
More than one in four Canadian children report feeling sad or hopeless for long periods of time, and around one in three are experiencing symptoms linked to mental distress each week, like headaches and stomach aches.
Those are some of the findings from a new report published today by Unicef, which looks at the wellbeing of kids in this country.
The report also finds that around a quarter of children go to bed hungry, and around the same number are being bullied.
It can be challenging for parents to navigate their children’s mental health. How can you tell when your child is experiencing a healthy level of grumpiness or dissatisfaction with having to go to school, and how can you tell when it’s something more serious?
Guest: Dr Ashley Miller
Psychiatrist at BC Children’s Hospital

Looking to eat more plants? Here are some ideas to get you started.
It seems like more and more of us are thinking about including more plants in our diet. Even meat-eaters are having to think more nowadays about how we prepare meals for our vegan or vegetarian friends.
But where do you start? How do you find some inspiration to make meals that are healthy and taste good, when this is a whole new world for you?
My next guest can help with that. Her name is Desiree Nielsen - she’s a registered dietitian who we’ve featured on the show here before and you may recognize her from her many TV and radio appearances.
Her new book is called: ‘Eat More Plants: Over 100 Anti-Inflammatory, Plant-Based Recipes for Vibrant Living’. She’s here today to share a few of her ideas with us.

$21 million for seismic upgrades at two elementary schools in Surrey
BC’s Education Minister, Rob Fleming, has announced $21 million in funding to go towards seismic upgrades at Holly Elementary and George Greenaway Elementary.
Students are returning to schools in the city today, with at least 1,000 more children expected. That means 28 more portable classrooms, bringing the total to 361.
Meanwhile, BC's teachers still don't have a deal, as the talks between the Teachers’ Federation and the province have been paused, with mediation set to continue on September 23rd.
That’s prompted the spokesperson for the Surrey District Parent Advisory Council to call for Surrey to be bargaining alone because of the size of the district.

Why are women so interested in stories of true crime?
Walk into any bookstore and you’re guaranteed to find plenty of material about stories of true crime. Real-life murder mysteries, tales from the courtroom, and details about what really goes on inside people’s homes.
But why does this kind of thing fascinate so many of us? Why do some people have an obsession with knowing the gory details of the worst times of other people’s lives?
My next guest has been looking into this and, appropriately, has written a book about it. It’s called Savage Appetites: Four True Stories of Women, Crime and Obsession. The author’s name is Rachel Monroe and she joins me now.
