How a teenage bride escaped a life she never chose

She faced years of abuse after arriving in Canada as a teenage bride in a hastily arranged marriage, but nothing could stop Samra Zafar from pursuing her dreams

 At 15, Samra Zafar had big dreams for herself. She was going to go to university, and forge her own path. Then with almost no warning, those dreams were pulled away from her when she was suddenly married to a stranger at 17 and had to leave behind her family in Pakistan to move to Canada. Her new husband and his family promised that the marriage and the move would be a fulfillment of her dream, not a betrayal of it. But as the walls of their home slowly became a prison, Samra realized the promises were empty ones.

In the years that followed she suffered her husband’s emotional and physical abuse that left her feeling isolated, humiliated and assaulted. Desperate to get out, and refusing to give up, she hatched an escape plan for herself and her two daughters. Somehow she found the strength to not only build a new future, but to walk away from her past, ignoring the pleas of her family and risking cultural isolation by divorcing her husband.

But that end was only the beginning for Samra. Through her academic and career achievements, she has gone on to become a mentor and public speaker, connecting with people around the world from isolated women in situations similar to her own, to young schoolgirls in Kenya who never allowed themselves to dream to men making the decisions to save for their daughters’ educations instead of their dowries.  A Good Wife tells her harrowing and inspiring story, following her from a young girl with big dreams, through finding strength in the face of oppression and then finally battling through to empowerment.

It’s time for the return of the wolf 

Wolves were once common throughout North America and Eurasia. But by the early twentieth century, bounties and organized hunts had drastically reduced their numbers. Today, the wolf is returning to its ancestral territories, and the "coywolf"--a smaller, bolder wolf-coyote hybrid--is becoming more common. In Return of the Wolf, author Paula Wild gathers first-hand accounts of encounters with wolves and consults with wildlife experts for suggestions on how to minimize conflict, respond to aggressive wolves and coexist with the apex predator.

Wild explores the latest theories on how wolves became dogs, the evolving strategies to prevent livestock predation, and why Eurasian wolves seem more aggressive toward humans than their North American cousins. She also addresses the many misconceptions about wolves: for example, that they howl when hungry, kill for pleasure and always live in packs. What is true is that a wolf possesses a howl as unique as a human fingerprint and can trot eight kilometres per hour for most of the day or night in search of prey while using earth's magnetic field to find its way. Some scientists consider wolves' complex social structures and family bonds closer to humans' than those of primates.

George Takei speaks to the Simi Sara Show about his memoir, They Called Us Enemy

George Takei is in Vancouver as he signs copies of his bestselling new graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy.

Long before Takei braved new frontiers in Star Trek, he woke up as a four-year-old boy to find his own birth country at war with his father’s - and their entire family forced from their home into an uncertain future.

His memoir recounts the impact on his family of the order by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 that every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was to be rounded up and shipped to one of ten “relocation centers,” where they would be held for years under armed guard.

He spoke about this during his interview with Simi on Monday’s edition of the show.

Livin’ La Vida Lonely

A new study cements the fact fewer young Canadians are settling down, in fact many are deciding just to live 'alone'. A study by the Cardus group shows fewer Canadian young adults are married or living together than in the past and more and more are deciding to just be 'alone.'

The study shows there's been a steady decline in partnerships over the decades. The report looked at Census data between 1996 and 2016 for people aged 20 to 34. It shows there's been a slow but steady growth in the number of young people who are not married or living together in part because of economic conditions and many are deciding to move back home with the parents. The report says this trend is delaying many moving into 'adulthood' and having children.

Tennis player, Mike Bryan

Mike Bryan has been fined $10,000 at the U.S. Open for pointing his racket as if it were a gun during a doubles match.

Bryan, whose twin brother is his partner, was called for a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct in the last game of the second set after making the gesture.

After a lob by their opponents was ruled in, the Bryans challenged the call. A replay review showed that the ball landed out. That's when Bryan pointed toward the chair umpire and line judge with a finger, then placed the head of his racket on his shoulder and pretended to ``aim'' the handle.

It's the highest fine given to a man so far at this year's U.S. Open.

U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Brendan McIntyre said: “The gesture warranted that amount.”

The Bryans' match Saturday night was played hours after a man in Texas shot seven people to death and injured 22 others.

That was the 25th mass killing in the U.S. so far this year, matching the number in all of 2018.

The Jonas Brothers surprised a teenager named Lily Jordan over the weekend.

Lily is at Penn State Children's Hospital. She’s been living with cancer for years, and is proving to be something of an inspiration - she raises money for other children with the disease.

The Jonas Brothers were in town for a concert the other night, so they popped by to say hello before their performance.

Lily says the visit "made her life."
