In this Movie-Go-Round Primeflix Roulette episode, we watched a Michael J. Fox romantic comedy, so you know this movie is wall-to-wall wit and charm, right?... Right?... uh oh... Unfortunately, David, Brett, and Nicole discovered that even the immense charisma of young Mr. Fox is not enough to carry this dead weight of a film, For Love or Money. We got to see a tiny bit of the secret world of a concierge and a lot of a bad "love" story and scheming for one's capitalist dreams. But we had a fun (if briefer than usual) discussion about it. For this Movie-Ghoul-Round's Around the World, David picked the TIFF and Netflix sensation, The Platform (El Hoyo). In exchange for a degree to get himself ahead in life, Goreng volunteers for six months in the "Vertical Self-Management Center," a prison in which the residents are literally stacked on top of each other, with two inmates per floor and a vertical shaft where the food platform comes through for two minutes a day. Among many deep musings, David, Brett, and Nicole talked about the filmmaking, the less-than-subtle metaphors, the fascination with the dystopian prison genre, and whether it's possible for one person to fight an entrenched system.
