In today's episode I have a focus on the nine steps involved in the Instructional Learning process. This is a short summary and the full article on each of the steps can be found in an article on my website at www.ateachersstory.com.
Robert Gagné proposed a series of events which follow a systematic instructional design process that share the behaviorist approach to learning, with a focus on the outcomes or behaviors of instruction or training.
Each of the nine events of instruction is highlighted briefly in this podcast, followed by sample methods to help implement the events in your own instruction.
Many educationalists use Gagné’s nine events in conjunction with Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy to design engaging and meaningful instruction by:
Helping students make sense of new information by relating it to something they already know or to something they have already experienced.
Provide instructional support as needed – as scaffolds (cues, hints, prompts) which can be removed after the student learns the task or content.
Ask deep-learning questions, making reference to what students already know.
Help students integrate new knowledge by providing real-world examples.
Embed questions throughout instruction through oral questioning and/or quizzes
