If you’ve been wondering why Ten is rebranding its multi-channels One and Eleven to Boss and Peach… that makes five of us. In this week’s Mumbrellacast, we plead with Ten to prove our assumptions about awkward gender stereotypes wrong. Only next week’s upfronts will tell.
We also provide some suggestions for the vacant top job at WPP AUNZ, and grapple with what the Rush court case could mean for the future of journalism in Australia.
Oh, and MCN’s rebrand leads us to reminisce about a certain old logo which may or may not have been created in Microsoft Word…
Built in Microsoft Word: The most amateur logo of all time?
Plus, we speak to Junkee Media’s Tim Duggan (25:17) about publishing’s love / hate relationship with Facebook, staying relevant in a challenging market and why outdoor advertising and youth publishing makes sense.

  • Mumbrellacast: SeaChange resurrected, Cosmo killed, Foxtel marketing reborn… and a Jesus ad
Nine’s upfronts saw history repeating itself this week, with the resurrection of late ’90s family drama SeaChange and the renewal of several of 2018’s most successful formats.
But repetition isn’t necessarily a bad thing, something Nine execs Lizzie Young and Michael Stephenson explain in this week’s Mumbrellacast interview (19:31).
Also this week, Cosmo Australia was given the chop, much to the chagrin of ex-editors and readers alike. But what really caused the brand’s downfall? Plus, we delve into why Foxtel’s chief marketing officer Andy Lark was ousted after less than a year in the role.
We also saw a philosophical question – what would Jesus do? – attract debate in our comment thread. The question was posed in an ad which featured two guards telling Jesus to donate his organs. After moderating close to 200 outraged comments, the only question that remains is: what will Ad Standards do?

  • Mumbrellacast: The Opera House debate, Ten’s reality pickle and Google+ is dead
This week, a huge promotion for The Everest Horse race was beamed onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House ahead of the race on Saturday. In the latest edition of Mumbrellacast, we break down exactly why the entire advertising community had something to say about it, and assess if the slippery slope argument might actually be valid.
We also take a moment to reflect on the passing of Google+, which was “sunsetted” after it was revealed the tech giant had known about a security breach affecting 500,000 users for six months before telling anyone about it.
Plus, The Bachelor finished and The Bachelorette began – but is Ten becoming a one-trick pony? And in this week’s creative corner, we profess our love of Volkswagen’s latest ad from safely within our adland bubble – but will consumers actually care?
    In the news
Will the Opera House become Sydney’s latest and largest billboard? (01:14)
Survivor and The Bachelor finales prove a hit for Ten – but can it bounce back after The Bachelorette’s blow? (10:59)

    Google+ is dead (24:55)
    https://mumbrella.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Mumbrellacast-Jill-Rowley.mp3
Plus, in a Project Zeus-themed interview (watch this if you have no idea what that means), Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes and Marketo’s chief growth officer Jill Rowley attempt to untangle the realities of a world where sales and marketing are growing ever closer (30:48).
However, when it comes to who’s on top, Rowley doesn’t believe in a fight. She instead sees the trend moving away from strict siloed department heads towards the more all-encompassing chief growth officer – which just so happens to be Rowley’s title.
But when it all comes down to it, she says, the debate is ultimately redundant, because “it’s the perspective of the individual, and do they see things through the modern lens?”

You’ve probably already heard about Hedley Thomas’ podcast, The Teacher’s Pet. His revelations about the disappearance and presumed murder of wife and mother Lynette Dawson in the 1980s has been downloaded tens of millions of times, and has been hovering around the top spot in the iTunes podcast chart for months.
But what you might not know is exactly how Thomas came to report on the case, and how he navigates the complex legal challenges from so publicly accusing a man of murder. In this week’s Mumbrellacast, Thomas reveals how he created one of Australia’s biggest podcasting success stories.
