Jonelle Matthews, a 12-year-old girl from the United States, vanished near Greeley, Colorado, on December 20, 1984. Her remains were located on July 24, 2019, by construction workers who were installing a new pipeline approximately 15 miles from her residence. On October 31, 2022, Steven Pankey received a life sentence following his arrest and trial for the murder of Matthews.

Disappearance

On the night of December 20, 1984, Matthews participated in a Christmas concert at the IntraWest Bank of Denver as a member of the Franklin Middle School Choir from Greeley. At the time, her father was attending her sister's basketball game, while her mother was out of state tending to a sick family member. After receiving a ride home from her friend DeeAnna Ross and DeeAnna's father, Matthews arrived at her Greeley home at 8:15 PM. Shortly after 8:30 PM, she answered a phone call and took a message for her father, marking the last known communication anyone had with her.

Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker and Roy Lewis Norris, infamously referred to as the Tool Box Killers, were two American serial killers and rapists responsible for the abduction, sexual assault, torture, and murder of five teenage girls in Southern California during a five-month span in 1979.

FBI Special Agent John Edward Douglas characterized Bittaker as the most unsettling individual for whom he has ever developed a criminal profile. Bittaker was sentenced to death for his involvement in the five murders on March 24, 1981, but he passed away from natural causes while on death row at San Quentin State Prison in December 2019.

Norris entered into a plea agreement in which he consented to testify against Bittaker, resulting in a life sentence on May 7, 1980, with the possibility of parole after serving thirty years. He also died of natural causes at the California Medical Facility in February 2020.

At 2:40 A.M. on December 9, 2001, Mike Peterson, aged 58 at the time, contacted emergency services to report that his wife, Kathleen, aged 48, had fallen down a staircase consisting of 15 to 20 steps within their residence. He stated that he had been seated by the backyard pool and entered the house to discover Kathleen deceased.

Peterson indicated that his wife had consumed alcohol and may have taken a Valium, suggesting that she could have tripped as a result. The toxicology report appeared to support this assertion, revealing that Kathleen's blood alcohol concentration was .07, which is near the legal limit for driving.


On February 24, 2017, Mike Peterson entered an Alford plea to involuntary manslaughter, which allowed him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that a jury would likely convict him. Having already served a longer period than any possible sentence, Peterson is now a free individual, although he remains officially recognized as a convicted felon.
