Episode 19: Sanjuana Moreno – Wharton, TX
A small town convenience store clerk is found dead in the early morning hours. Was it a robbery gone wrong or a brutal targeted attack?
Episode Summary
In this week’s episode of True Crime Unwind, we share the heartbreaking story of Sanjuana “Juana” Moreno- a 24-year-old Mexican immigrant and beloved sister, wife, and daughter living in Wharton, Texas. On August 9, 1988, Juana opened the Kwik Chek Drive-Inn for her early morning shift. Just a few hours later, she was found stabbed to death behind the counter, with only a small amount of money missing from the register.
More than three decades later, Juana’s murder remains unsolved. Her family, especially her younger sister Nohemi, continues to honor her legacy of kindness, peace, and positivity. Despite its brutality, Juana’s case barely made headlines outside of Wharton, reflecting a troubling pattern of underreported crimes against Hispanic victims in the 1980s.
Join us as we revisit Juana’s life, the circumstances of her death, and why her story deserves to be remembered.
