In this episode, we introduce you to the inspirational Dr. Nancy Saltzman.

Nancy's story is one of love, courage, tragedy, dedication, hope and determination. 

After her first marriage ended, Nancy met the love of her life Joel and they became a family of four with the arrival of their beautiful sons, Adam and Seth. Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer twice in her thirties, however it was a phone call just after midnight one night a few years later, in 1995, that completely shattered her life as she knew it.

The person on the phone saying "I'm sorry, there were no survivors" as they informed Nancy that the small plane carrying her husband and two young sons had crashed.

Nancy shares with us how she was able to keep going through such tragedy and return to her role as a school Principal one week later to care for her pupils.

We also chat with Nancy about dating as a widow, how she met her now husband Greg, how she has managed to keep such a positive outlook and the important volunteer work she is now doing in the community and with Soaring Spirits International.

Following a successful 32 career as a teacher and administrator in the public school system, Nancy published her memoir “Radical Survivor: One Woman’s Path Through Life, Love, and Uncharted Tragedy”. Of the book one reviewer wrote, “Saltzman’s story, told with honesty, insight, and laugh-out-loud flashes of humor, teaches us that it is possible to embrace life in the wake of tragedy. Let her show you the staying power of joy, strength, grace and love.”

However, given how often this comes up when we're working with our widowed coaching clients, we felt that it's a conversation that needs to be had. Widow / Widower... what image or feelings does this word bring up for you?

In this episode we take a closer look at how society defines a widowed person, compared to how those of us who are actually living it feel.

You don't have to be confined by society's perceptions and conditions.

You can choose to redefine widowhood however you want to. Is it a symbol of deep love for your person or the pride of being their love? Does it remind you that you are a survivor and how resilient you are? Or maybe the way you are rebuilding your life while still honoring your love for your person?

That W word doesn't have to be all of the negative things we've been told. If we choose to let it empower us, we can.
