  • Shane Norte: #MEDZZZTOOSTRONG

Today we have the absolute privilege of hosting the Founder of the Church of the People For Creator and Mother Earth -- Shane Norte

Shane is a member of the Morongo Band Native American Tribe and he is also a National Board Member for the Decriminalize Nature organization

Today we talk about his work facilitating healing ceremonies on tribal land using psilocybin mushrooms, and doing so free of charge for the members of his church.

We touch upon what ceremony means from an indigenous, ancestral perspective -- we talk about land autonomy and what the 'land back' movement looks like in the context of the 21st Century billion dollar tribe -- we talk about the American Indian Religious Freedom Act passed in 1978 that recognizes Shane’s and other indigenous healers legal right to continue the sacred ceremonies and practices they have employed for thousands of years before the occupation of their lands by the United States government --

And we're talking’ bout macro dose mushroom experiences! So buckle in and let’s get down to business !

  • Unicorn Bags: The Business of Making The World's Best Mushroom Grow Bag

Today on the pod we’ve got Garrett from Unicorn Bags, one of the worlds leading wholesale manufacturers of mushroom grow bags.

Unicorn Bags is in their 32nd year of business, and today they are as cost effective, adept, and popular a product as they have ever been in their long and celebrated history.

Today Garrett and I talk about some of the more niche aspects of the Unicorn Bag performance standard -- from rigorous environmental testing in no less a plastic averse nation as Rwanda, to the difference between Biodegradable bags and Oxo-biodegradable bags, to some of the more recent product offerings under the Unicorn brand, to entomopathogenic fungi --

What does that even mean? Find out in this episode -

So all you science majors, please stand up -

And for the rest of us, let’s take this as an opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into the products we sometimes take for granted but that are absolutely essential in enabling our own Mycopreneurial pursuits.

  • Olga Tzogas: Myceliate the State

Today on the pod we’ve got Olga Tzogas, creator and operator of the community known worldwide as Smugtown Mushrooms.

Olga is a well-known and beloved figure in the worlds of mycology, allyship, and environmental activism -- an intersection which she strongly feels warrants more attention and recognition in the scientific community

  • William Padilla-Brown: DNA Sequencing & Marine Fungi

Today on the pod we’ve got a legend of the Myco game -- Distinguished citizen scientist, author and mycopreneur -

Permaculture Papi, AKA Mycosymbi, aka William Padilla-Brown.

Today we talk about DNA Barcoding of fungi and the equipment that William uses to catalogue and contribute his finds to databases, we talk about the synergistic relationship potential between algae and fungi (phycology and mycology) -- we talk equity and access to fungi educatio), and in fact we pop into uncharted territory with a little dialogue about Will's forays into the world of marine fungi.

This dude is on another level -- he’s the archetypal embodiment of everything a Mycoprener can be, and it’s an absolute privilege to host him today.

I used to teach high school Multimedia Production at a world renowned Title 1 charter school in San Diego -- by definition a Title 1 school means that the majority of the students come from low income demographics, from communities of color and historically marginalized populations, and *I wish* that I had known Will back then because I firmly believe that environmental apathy, the pop culture machine, the click bait and trolling and attention deficit democracy and institutionalized racism baked into our world order are only thriving right now because science and education lack the swag factor, they lack the sexiness that they deserve when represented to young inquiring minds.

That’s all starting to change thanks to Permaculture Papi and those like him at the vanguard of citizen science and the mushroom revolution.

Giuliana's accolades in the world of mycology and fungi diplomacy are globally renowned and meteorically impactful - Fungi Foundation is the world’s first NGO dedicated exclusively to the preservation and promotion of fungi conservation and education. One of the many crowning achievements of the foundation's work is getting the government of Chile to officially recognize the queendom of fungi in it’s environmental legislation, making it the First Nation globally to do so - we’re talk about what it means for fungi to receive government recognition and support, how to spearhead pro-fungi change in environmental policy and legislation, and we also talk about Fungi Diplomacy and how citizen diplomats and citizen scientists can effectively marshal change at institutional levels.

We’re also talk about the Future is Fungi event that Fungi Foundation and it’s coterie of prolific advocates are hosting tomorrow, Saturday June 26th online worldwide — and what the future of fungi in educational curriculums around the globe looks like.

She's going to be educating us today about some of the pinning developments and innovations coming out of the Four Sigmatic laboratories - which in reality, are actually reimaginations and recontextualizations of ancestral knowledge and wisdom centered around leveraging fungi.

What kind of mycopreneurial innovations slash reimaginations are we talking about here? Well how about mushroom-based edible skin care products that can double as a creamer in your Lions Mane coffee? Whaaaaat?!

Danielle will also share some of her best practices for polysaccharide extraction and the process of medicinal mushroom tincture production, as well as home fungi cultivation -- we’re also exploring the intersection of consumer habits and the global supply chain, Four Sigmatic business ethos, and more.

  • Ben Wyeth: Rock Star Vibes

Ben Wyeth is an emotional wellness and spiritual life coach from New York City.

He’s also an extraordinary songwriter and musician who has scaled the heights of the music industry, having played sold out shows from Tokyo to New York, From Sydney to Paris, and hundreds of cities In between while on tour with the band Hockey, which he founded and fronted for around a decade.

    ( Ben sound bite)

I personally saw Hockey at Coachella in 2010, and I still consider Ben’s performance to be one of the most impressive live vocal performances I’ve ever seen —

Between 2009 and 2010, Ben became a fixture on the worlds worlds biggest stages, from major festivals like Glastonbury , Bonaroo, and Lolapalooza to sold out stadium concerts across Europe and the United States with major pop acts like Pink and Portugal the Man, to late night television performances on the Jools Holland show and Spin Magazine.

As the relentless international touring, high stakes pressures of life in the spotlight, and the bands meteoric musical successes gradually gave way to Ben’s plummeting sense of confidence and self-worth, he unintentionally threw it all away.

In the years since, he spent the better part of the last decade lost and searching for himself, and in doing so has undergone a profound personal and spiritual transformation.

Today Ben is going to walk us through some of the insights he has gleaned from it all, with a special focus on strategies for living in the here and now, tapping into the flow state, and nourishing our innate creativity and emotional wellness.

In this episode we connect with Amanda Morglund, co-founder of Fungi Solutions.

Fungi Solutions is a mycocycling and mycomaterials outfit based out of Melbourne, Australia.

Amanda has an extensive background in biomaterials design and prototyping, including in the fashion industry where she pioneered a process called "Mycotailoring", which leverages the adaptive capabilities of fungi to create new mycelium-composite fabrics out of discarded textiles.

This same principle of environmental remediation and transformation is the guiding ethos of Fungi Solutions - With fungi, landfill refuse and discarded resources can be broken down and rebuilt into circular packaging solutions and other useful products while capturing Carbon Dioxide, instead of emitting it.

Today Amanda is going to walk us through some of the exciting research and development that is in full swing at the Fungi Solutions HQ, including their collaboration with an Australian charity to mycoremediate the environmental damage caused by the more than 7 billion cigarette butts that are discarded annually across the Australian continent.

We’re also going to hear about the mycelium-composite modular acoustic treatment blocks that Fungi Solutions is outfitting recording studios and media production facilities with, as well as their goal to create clean social spaces with bio design.

These are just a few of the impressive range of Fungi Solutions that we’re going to dive into on the 15th episode of Mycopreneur Podcast.
