  • May May Have to Delay for Another Day
    Tuesday 19th March 2019
The Speaker of the House in the Commons has blocked Theresa May from re-tabling her Brexit deal, meaning another answer needs to be found. As Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s Tapas Strickland, that leaves little choice but for May to ask for a longer extension – nine months is being talked about as the gestation period for a new plan. Meanwhile the markets are on-hold ahead of the FOMC meeting later in the week. They also discuss the Euro, is it ready to bounce back a little?

  • Holding out for the FOMC and for Brexit news
    Monday 18th March 2019
It’s a slow start to the trading week with a day light on data, but the FOMC meeting on Thursday wil be one of the highlights. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether we can expect much movement in the Fed’s forecasts and dot points. They also discuss the Bank of Japan’s policy approach, US manufacturing numbers, the timetable for a US China trade deal and, yes, you guessed it, more on Brexit.

  • Mayhem as May Manoeuvres For Her Deal
    Friday 15th March 2019
Theresa May seems to be using every trick in the book to get her deal over the line. Her motion, to extend article 50 only if her deal is passed, was the only vote (out of five) that passed in the House of Commons today. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Tapas Strickland whether this means it’s her deal or no deal? A US-China trade deal looks simpler, even though it too has been delayed. And why are the Aussie and New Zealand dollars amongst the worst performers overnight?

  • Goodbye to a no-deal Brexit, ever
    Thursday 14th March 2019
There have been three votes on a no-deal Brexit at Westminster. The surprising vote was the one that called for there to be no-deal at any time. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Gavin Friend in London about the significance of the votes. Meanwhile, signs that the European economy might be levelling off, rather than falling, with positive industrial production numbers, and sharp rises in US equities on the back of strong durable goods and capital goods orders. They also discuss Australia’s weak consumer confidence numbers yesterday and look ahead to data out today.

  • May Defeated, Boeing Grounded
    Wednesday 13th March 2019
The UK Prime Minister has suffered another defeat (242 v 391), with her Brexit deal failing to pass through parliament. Phil Dobbie talks with NAB’s David de Garis about the consequences – a delay seems inevitable, but for how long? Boeings share price has driven the Dow down, whilst lower than expected inflation will have had a bit to do with bond prices today. And, bad news yesterday in the NAB Business Survey, yet the Aussie dollar holding itself up a little this morning.
