  • Episode 176: Josie Iselin - The Mysterious World of the Bull Kelp Forest
Josie Iselin is a photographer, author, and book designer, including The Mysterious World of the Bull Kelp Forest (2026). She is also a co-director of Above/Below, a campaign to bring the recognition afforded forests on land to the kelp forests below the ocean’s surface. Synthesizing the scientific stories of our coasts is her overriding passion, bringing thoughtfulness and stewardship to this extraordinary place of discovery.
On this episode of Nature Revisited, Josie introduces us to the overlooked complex underwater world of Bull Kelp forests on the North Pacific coast of the US. Each year, tiny bull kelp saplings explode into sixty-foot “redwoods”, harboring an array of co-dependent species. She describes how their interspecies dramas play out in eight coastal regions, from Alaska to central California, exploring instances of interdependent, compromised, and resilient coastal ecosystems. Humans are also deeply implicated in this saga—by turns beneficiaries, agents of harm, and stewards of these subtidal sanctuaries.

  • Revisit: Mark J. Easter - The Blue Plate
Mark J. Easter is an ecologist, researcher, and author of more than fifty scientific papers and reports related to carbon cycling and the carbon footprint of agriculture, forestry, and other land uses.
On this episode of Nature Revisited, Mark offers us a picture of the impact the foods we eat every day have on the earth. From the soil that grows our crops, to the farmers who steward the land, to the workers and grocers who bring the food to our table, the compounding social and environmental impacts are far-reaching. However, we can employ low-carbon, in-season alternatives to make our foods more sustainable, but we must first understand how food is produced, harvested, and shipped. • Episode 175: Ben Cosgrove - Topograph
Ben Cosgrove is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores themes of landscape, place, and environment. Described as “a sonic plein-air painter who uses his piano as a paintbrush,” Ben's music "incorporates elements of classical, folk, country, blues, pop, et cetera, and can be by turns meditative and chaotic, somber and exuberant.."
On this episode of Nature Revisted, Ben returns to discuss the influences and creative process behind his latest album Topograph. The sixteen new songs are inspired by landscapes of tumult and change — instances of “water and air moving land around”. The resulting album is as lush and diverse as the scenes and processes that inspire it: moving islands, eroding dunes, collapsing hillsides, and landscapes being made and unmade.

  • Episode 173: Megan Eaves-Egenes - Nightfaring
Megan Eaves-Egenes is a Lowell Thomas Award-winning travel writer whose work explores the intersections of landscape, culture, and the natural world. A passionate advocate for dark skies, she is the editor of DarkSky International's Nightscape magazine and founded Dark Sky London, a community group focused on light pollution awareness.
In this episode of Nature Revisited, Megan alerts us to our ever-brightening world. The proliferation of artificial lighting around the world has created so much light pollution that many of us can no longer see the Milky Way or experience the restful embrace of a natural night. As the dark becomes ever more elusive, it is a critical moment to stop, look up, and consider what we lose with the disappearing stars.
