Nerdist’s review of the 2026 Scary Movie reboot declares the parody franchise's return a massive, laugh-out-loud success. Melissa Joan Hart Was Supposed to Play Cindy in the Original 'Scary Movie'

In a fun piece of early-2000s "what if" casting history, actress Melissa Joan Hart recently revealed that she was originally offered the lead role of Cindy Campbell in the 2000 horror parody Scary Movie. At the time, Hart was at the absolute height of her teen-idol fame, starring in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the teen comedy Drive Me Crazy. However, she ultimately turned down the project because she felt the script's incredibly raunchy, R-rated humor was a bit too far outside her established brand. Her decision to pass on the project opened the door for a then-unknown Anna Faris to step into the iconic, Scream-spoofing role, successfully launching Faris's massive comedic film career.
