Paul Brodrick found himself reassessing his life after having a bowel tumor removed five years ago. In this book, Cancer Mentality, he shares what it was like to be diagnosed with cancer, how he dealt with the fear of defective genes, and how he learned to choose his own prognosis for a cancer-free future.

We all want to live a long and happy life don’t we?  Of course we do. The problem is we are often driven by outside forces, the day-to-day influences on our life that seem to take precedence over our health — that is until it fails. Our guest today is Paul Broderick. Recently he had a complete change in his perspective on what it means to be healthy and how to live a good, long life.

Paul Broderick (Tumor) I was living what I thought was a very healthy lifestyle; Very active, eating well, doing all the right things even thinking positively actually. and then when something hit the fan and I had a diagnosis of a three inch tumor and I needed to be operated upon quite soon after I just had to figure out what the heck was going on. 

Paul Broderick is the  inquisitive type and it was his curiosity that inspired the writing of a book called “Cancer Mentality”. He took copious notes during his diagnosis and ordeal and is now sharing what he learned in “Cancer Mentality. The Cure for Cancer is in the Mind – Heal your Attitudes and Beliefs” it’s a title that requires a bit more explanation. 

Paul Broderick – What we’re talking about now is placebo-nocebo. placebo basically says it can happen if we believe it and belief doesn’t mean an active belief even a subconscious belief nocebo is telling us that bad is going to happen and that’s what doctors are doing with such a prognosis. We can believe a diagnosis but don’t need to choose or believe the prognosis and that’s the essence of my book is that I discovered how to choose my prognosis and anybody can do that. 

The power of positive thinking…you’ve heard that before but there’s a lot more to it than that. The mind is far more powerful and influential than we know. Now we are not saying that you can cure cancer with positivity but giving into it is not going to help either. Just know that anything is possible and you need to believe it.  With that in mind take a hard look at your life — that’s what Paul did.

Paul Broderick – I realized by slowing my life down that I had actually been just paying lip service to all these wonderful metaphysical, new-age, spiritual ideas and in fact it’s a lovely notion that we create our own reality but in essence I wasn’t doing that work. I wasn’t meditating. I wasn’t quieting my mind. I wasn’t finding peace in my life. I was striving, working, chasing and as I write in great depth in the book I realize that I was living in fear. Everybody’s touched by cancer, you know, heart-attacks all sorts of dramatic illness. We all know somebody and so I realized that I had to stop, rethink, reinvent myself and actually start doing this work and I found it to be an enormous pleasure. Not hard work at all, it was an enormous pleasure. 

Stop, rethink, reinvent and stay positive. If you stop listening now and do just that you’ll probably be on the right track but don’t stop listening yet because there’s more. Paul explains what drove him to this kind of thinking. 

Paul Broderick – As I healed, as my body repaired from the surgery. I was obviously off work. I took time out and I really was searching for wholesome answers to this because I asked the medical industry. I asked the surgeon. I asked the oncologist. I asked the dietician and they had nothing for lifestyle change for me. They had nothing to help me prevent this and no disrespect to the medical industry. Their trauma treatment is fantastic. I probably wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. But, so many great teachers out there are explaining how thoughts and emotions are now proven by science to become interactive with our physiology in a good way and a bad way.   

Yes and that is due to a few different things that are now widely known. Negative thoughts and emotions can weaken our immune system, when you’re stressed your body reacts to that stress…however, when you’re upbeat and positive your body reacts to that too — plus you just make better decisions on an average daily basis. According to Paul his problem was that he was living in a state of chronic negative emotion. 

Paul Broderick – Now we can call that stress and I do write about this in the book. So, if anything more negative than frustration says I am negatively affecting my physiology. These are known as diseases of inflammation and we have reams, lists of conditions people present to the doctors with, then if I’m able to switch that in any moment, instead of being annoyed or frustrated or angry or any negative emotion whether it’s momentary or chronically if i switch that to just a tiny few degrees in another direction I’m allowing by body to repair and its natural how all of our bodies in our cells – each individual cell, it wants to  live and grow and when we get out of our way with our negative self-talk an our negative beliefs and hatred in our dislike of this and that judgement and criticism of all the things then our body can naturally do what it naturally does. We can live much longer than we do. 

So, is the glass half full or half empty? What kind of person are you?  “Caner Mentality” asks a number of other questions like; What role does stress play in overall health? How can you look at wellness differently, to reclaim control of your health? What are the pros and cons of chemotherapy? Why is it so important to have a peaceful mind, to understand beliefs, to practice gratitude and have positive thoughts? He also shares his firm belief that healing depends on the attitude you bring to whatever you’re experiencing…at least that’s what worked for him. 

Paul Broderick – I got out of the way. I realized that I could put into practice many of the things that I already knew. I just looked at more detail on how to do that  and this book came about because I couldn’t see anyone else translating these wonderful teachers and all of this wonderful information about how science is showing that our thoughts become physiology changes. 

I’m one of those people who really hates to take medicine or be a slave to a daily regimen of pills. Every time I break down and go to the doctor I’m reminded that the thing that drove me there was stress related. Maybe I’ve just been lucky in that sense but our body really does have an amazing ability to heal itself under the right circumstances. Modern science is showing more and more how we can and should take charge of our health. 

Paul Broderick – I don’t mean to seem all angelic or whatever about it but it’s such an awesome experience to realize that I don’t need to be combative about the way i see the world and its nothing, our neighbors people in traffic, nothing needs to be argued against, fought against, conflicted. We can just free ourselves from all of it and not end up with cancer.

A teenager fights for his life in the jungles of Vietnam after getting shot in the mouth. Tom Wilson was saved. He became a minister and never lost his sense of humor about the tragedy he suffered. This is his story….

Welcome to this edition of Newsgram. 

Being a human is hard. We are faced with choices on a daily basis and it’s those choices that define us; both individually and collectively. Yes, life can be hard. Sometimes we make the right call and things work out great…and other times not so much. When we make bad decisions we have to deal with them and that builds character. To quote Mark Twain “Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from making bad decisions”. 

So what happens when bad things happen to you and it wasn’t your decision? It can be hard to keep a sense of humor, that’s for sure. Tom Wilson was drafted into the Vietnam War. The U.S. has not had a draft since 1973 but back then things were different. You could be an eighteen year old kid with an M-16 on your back on patrol in a Vietnamese jungle. 

Tom Wilson –  just turned eighteen years old when I went to Vietnam and in fact one of my nicknames there was “the kid” because I was so young. 

Tom was an infantryman, a job that on paper means to capture, destroy, and deter enemy forces. As the radio guy, he walked in front of the other men. So there he was, weighing in at a whopping 138 pounds, carrying a 45 pound radio on his back, a .45-caliber pistol, an M-16 and plenty of hand-grenades, M-16 clips, smoke grenades, and other stuff. 

Tom Wilson – I was a tank driver and that’s what I was trained for but they needed a guy so I ended up being an infantryman and then they for some reason looked at me and said that um, you’re going to carry the radio. I had no clue what that meant and I found out later on that it was about a forty-five pound thing you put on your back and then found out later on that that’s one of the most dangerous jobs to have because that’s what they shoot at first. They see an antenna sticking up. 

And so that’s exactly what happened. In his new book, “Shot in the Mouth and Still Preaching” Tom recounts his full experience. 

Tom Wilson – We didn’t realize that we were going into a horseshoe trap. This was February 14th, Valentines Day. We lost them. We stopped. I leaned my radio up against tree which I usually do because it’s heavy and I heard a zing-zing going by me and I didn’t fall I just turned around and looked and one of the rounds hit the ground, bounced up, went into my jaw and lodged into my cheekbone and I knee dup longs a percent of my jaw and nine teeth. I never passed out but I heard people all around me yelling for medic and  I didn’t know who was hit and I kind of rubbed my cheek and my chin and I saw the blood and I said aw man it must be me and so I started yelling and of course when I yelled I loosened the bullet and the bullet came out. My teeth and all that stuff came out and I had the bullet in my hand for a while but then my medic came and wrapped my head up. 

The area was so hot that he couldn’t get airlifted out until the next morning. Fortunately he lived to tell the story. So what got him through the ordeal? Have that expression “well….if you can’t take a joke”. 

Tom Wilson – Yea my sense of humor, I still have it. I’m so positive. I enjoy life and I don’t let anything get me down. 

Tom is no stranger to adversity. He says “…your attitude makes the biggest difference during tough…” and he should know. Being shot in Vietnam wasn’t the only thing he had to overcome. 

Tom Wilson – Just in the last 8,9,10 months I had prostate cancer. Went through radiation and three months after that I had a heart attack and a couple of stents in my one artery it was ninety-nine percent blocked and I had little small one that was about thirty percent but yea, I read a small book a long time ago and it was just titled Happiness is a Choice and it’s true. I mean I’m not belittling people that have problems and how they get through them and maybe don’t get through them but I just chose no matter what goes on in my life I’m not gonna let that get me down because I’m gonna choose that no matter what. It’s kind of how I live. I thought of that when I was a young age.

Tom’s not the only one who says a sense of humor and a positive attitude can help get through almost anything. Laughter is strong medicine — look it up. I know that it’s easier to say than do sometimes but there’s wisdom there. According to the Mayo clinic a few giggles can go a long way to relieving stress and less stress is a prescription for a healthier you. 

His book “Shot in the Mouth and Still Preaching” recounts his mission in Vietnam, his home life and the faith and philosophy that got him through the tough times. It’s a book for anyone going through a crisis in their life…especially if you’re struggling to get through it. 

Tom Wilson – It’s overwhelming. I couldn’t believe it when I got the copy in my hand and I looked at Sandy, my wife and said look at this. This really happened. It’s encouraging to me the number of copies that have been sold from people from church or wherever are buying it and giving it as gifts. It’s very, very, very humbling to me what’s going on here.

Today we spotlight a novel lovingly published by the author’s children as a tribute to their mother. “A Curlew Cried” was written by Winifred Millicent Hardie {deceased} over forty years ago and recently published by her daughters Helen Elizabeth Payne and Janet Anne Goldman. It is 1911 when Bill and Isobel Elgin scramble down from the Kalgoorlie Express with their family of six in tow to begin a new life in the wheatlands of Western Australia.

Today we are going to go back in time. It was just over forty years ago when Winifred Millicent Hardie sat down to write the story of Isobel and Bill Elgin and their children emigrating from England for a new life on a farm in the remote Wheatbelt of Western Australia.

In Bill and Isobel’s world it’s 1911. A tough time for Australian farmers who were pushed to their limits by the dry, dusty, vermin-infested landscape. Bill and Isobel are stepping off the Kalgoorlie Express, Perth station, with their family of six and dreams of a new life in an unforeseen future.

Helen Payne – None of them knew anything about farming basically, and they came out from England and got this farm in the middle of nowhere and they were the pioneers of that time. They struggled through droughts and floods and the first world war. 

That is Helen Payne who along with her sister Janet Goldman recently published the manuscript of this part-true/part-fictional story —     titled “A Curlew Cried ”. It was a story they found among the items in their mothers estate. 

Helen Payne – It was wonderful. From the minute I sort of looked at and started to read it I was fascinated and of course all the pages had sort of been mixed up so I had to go through all the pages and put them back together again and I couldn’t put it down. I was absolutely fascinated.

Doesn’t that put a smile on your face? It is one of my favorite types of finds stumbling across something long forgotten. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from the movie “Field of Dreams” “…The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces…” it’s wonderfully dizzying.

Helen Payne – When she had time she’d open it up and write this, write whatever she was writing,  and as a fourteen your old I wasn’t the slightest bit interested in what she was doing  and when she was finished she asked my sister to type it. My sister was a typist and I can remember Janet sitting there with this old fashioned typewriter typing this manuscript and I don’t know what happened. It got finished and then nothing happened with it and they shoved it in a bag and when mom got ill she came to live with us and of course everything came with her and I just must have put it in the filing cabinet and forgot about it. It was only through sheer luck that I found it and we got it published. 

So the lives of the Elgin family have been dusted off and sent out into the world for us to enjoy. It was a tough life for these pioneers, farming rugged terrain in a turbulent time. Still, they persevered as the determined family they were, willing to do whatever it took no matter what the personal sacrifices may have been.

Helen Payne – They came to Perth, which is our capital and from there got on a train and got to this farm and they had it for a long, long time and made the best out of a bad situation but at least they could own that property and the girls in the family supported the men and worked as hard as the men. 

The will to go the distance was so powerful back then. The faith, the commitment and the sense of family unity was so powerful. If you like this kind of story I think you’ll enjoy “A Curlew Cried ” by Winifred Millicent Hardie and unless you’re an Ornithologist you  have to be curious about what in the world a Curlew is…

Helen Payne – A Curlew is a bird that used to be in the wheat fields.

Yes, there are a couple of different types of Curley. The Bush Stone-curlews are now listed as threatened but you can still find them if you’re a determined birder — check out the Koala Conservation Reserve — I’m told they have some. The Eastern curlew, looks kind of like a skinny version of the Kiwi and it is listed as critically endangered in Australia. 

One more thing…in Australian folklore the Curlew is said to represent a “bad omen” or “death” because its call sounds like a screaming woman or a baby.  

O.k. I’ll stop talking about birds but I wanted to share that because I think it adds a great amount of romance to this tale. A family struggling to make a new life in an unforgiving world and finding a way to not only do just that but to find some laughs as well. 

It’s also the story of Winifred Millicent Hardie, her lost manuscript and her hidden past now resurrected in a magnificent way. Here Helen recounts how she felt when she first read the manuscript and found out something about her mom that she never knew. 

Helen Payne – Everything sort of came together for me that this is what mom was trying to tell us but she couldn’t because she would have been sworn to secrecy that she was illegitimate and she couldn’t even tell her own daughters and I think that’s the saddest part. I mean there’s obviously a lot of fiction in it as well but most of the characters I suppose when mom wrote it were still alive so she couldn’t put them down. but all the boys that went to war, that was true. I think people will love it actually and I really hope they do because everyone I know who has read it has loved it and said “where’s the sequel, we need a sequel”. 

Leave them wanting more. Perfect.

What happens when a man with an analytical mind takes a spiritual journey? It can lead to some interesting results. Today we’re going to take a spiritual journey while debunking a few myths surrounding some of the most popular biblical stories.  

We are all on our own Journey and we follow a path guided by our own internal compass and by our beliefs and experiences. Whatever your path, whatever you’re doing for personal growth, it’s what makes you unique. We bounce through life doing the best we can right? Try not to hurt anyone, be of service to others and be in the right place mentally when the tough times come — they always come. 

Today I want you to meet John Wheeler. He’s a pretty fascinating guy and he’s going to share his journey with us today. He wrote a book called “Prayer is a Journey” and while it is a spiritual one, he talks about it so matter-of-factly that you can’t help but be intrigued by it. 

John Wheeler – It was like getting on Aladdin’s Magic Carpet you know.

A magical ride that starts with a phone call of sorts and what do you do when the phone rings? Well….you answer it. 

John Wheeler – I was told to by God. All that knowledge that I put in the book I  acquired over years. I tell them about my journey, my journey of prayer. I’ve had some experiences with God helping with different things. I was ordered to do it. For myself I couldn’t care less. 

I told you he was an interesting guy. He’s obviously an author but he’s also a Lawyer, a Marriage counselor and a modern day Mystic.  He was also Foundation president of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Australia for fifteen years. He also knows a thing or two about physics. 

John Wheeler – I was top of the class in physics so I like physics and when I saw this bit about after the flood God put a bow in the sky I thought to myself that’s nonsense. A rainbow is formed by light being refracted by droplets of water so rainbows have been around for years. Long before Noah and then I discovered one of God’s tricks or methods. I shouldn’t say tricks. He will say things that are patently silly to get a message across and there’s one of them. 

So he’s not against religion when he says these things didn’t happen, he’s just saying you need to think about them differently. They didn’t happen the way you were told but to know the difference you need to pray. 

 John Wheeler – Anyone that understands physics knows that rainbows have been around long before Noah. Secondly, there never was a flood. The flood refers to the path, the time in your life when your soul is cleansed  and then you live in the art with all your family and that’s how we live a quiet life in the ark. The art was supposed to be made of timber; well timber loses its strength at 300 feet. There’s ben people in America that built an ark, cost them millions of dollars, they went out to sea, got into a storm, it fell to bits and they all died. They’re allegories. You have to spend a lot of time praying and you have to have a lot of inspiration, a lot of gifts to understand the allegories. How did the ark get across the ocean? It had to get up the Amazon river. It’s a really strong river, 300 miles, it had to get up 3000 miles, not possible. How did Noah understand two million creatures? Some say it was twenty million creatures but even two million it’s just not possible. How would he know two million creatures? Not possible. So it’s just not possible if you use your common sense you say it’s just not possible. 

Some of that is controversial depending on your belief system but the big takeaway here is the stories are allegorical. Don’t dismiss them. Work to understand them so you can get the benefit from them. While we’re on the subject, let’s talk about Adam and Eve. 

John Wheeler – Adam and Eve never existed. Adam is the first man and Eve is the first woman in a person’s soul. We are made in the likeness and image of God. We look like him, not a martian. We’re made in his image, in other words we have his spirit  so that’s where we all start and we find a way to sin and we lose that. 

I wish you were sitting here with me so I could see your reaction. It’s a bit abstract but it makes total sense if you are able to think spiritually. If you understand that we are all spiritual beings and we are eternal. To illustrate this John put a picture of a moon rock on the cover of his book. 

John Wheeler – and the significance of that is that that rock was discovered by Nasa. It’d been on the moon for four and a half billion years. have a look at the rock and think about four and a half billion years and then think about four and a half billion, billion years and then think about eternity because that’s where you’re gonna finish. You need to make decisions now because eternity doesn’t end. four and a half billion years is nothing compared to eternity. That’s what that is all about. 

It’s a lot to think about but he says that’s really the key. Thinking and reflecting on our life, our purpose and what we were put here to accomplish — which is to grow spiritually. 

John Wheeler – The only way to get insight is you must pray to be given insight. I think it’s Paul the Apostle and one of the famous Greek philosophers, I forget which one says the unreflected life is not worth living. Unless you lie down at night and run through what  you did that day or week and correct yourself, reflect on your life, your life is not worth living because you’re not making any advances. That’s my take on the whole subject. People need to pray and reflect on their life. How can I improve on myself, what have I done wrong, what did I do wrong today, what mistakes I made — because we make mistakes all day and just correct them. That’s all.

He’s talking about Socrates who is said to have proclaimed “The unexamined life is not worth living”. Along his journey John found that one of the problems with modern religion is that it doesn’t work anymore so he says he was asked by God to help rebuild his church but not literally, from a spiritual standpoint. 

John Wheeler – It is God’s will to be holy. It is in the bible that exact statement. It is God’s will that you be Holy and to be Holy you don’t go and have a cup of coffee and say today I’m going to be Holy you have to work at it. You have to pray. You have to study. You have to work in the environment. It’s meant to be a thought provoking book. It’s meant for people to read and to study if you like and acquire the knowledge. I’ve written hundreds of books so it’s not just this book. I’m just trying to give people the method of doing it, you know. If God wants you to be Holy then why the Hell would we not be Holy?

I’m more of a learn by doing person but I ask that question because today I will be introducing you to Dr. James Whorley. He has a new book out that was inspired by watching churches, conventions and stadiums filled with people moved by a sermon but eventually fall back into their old ways of thinking.

Dr. James Whorley – You know I’ve always had a heart for people. Watching struggles and different difficulty that people go to and many times I’ve went to prison and have seen people falling into different traps and the book was written for the purpose of showing people a guide, a direction, a step-by-step walk out of situations and how to stay on a path of hopefully a path where they desire a better life. 

It’s a guide to help you maintain a spirit-filled life. 

Dr. James Whorley – Many times I talk with people. They come to the Lord. They get saved and excited about walking with the Lord and sometimes it’d be that initial excitement but then they tend to drift away because they don’t have any direction and it came to me that a lot times when people sign up for the army they all excited they don’t what they’re gonna face they don’t know really what it’s all about. That sergeant or whoever is in charge has the desire to transform them to make them into what they could not make themselves and he began to work with them, guiding them, giving them structure, developing them in a stage and  same with Discipleship. You come in as a Disciple, as a student, as a pupil, someone that’s come to learn to get instructions and knowledge on things you may have not known; and so in my book you will see that it’s a guide. It’s a step-by-step direction showing a person how they can be transformed. 

Whether it’s in church or at a motivational speaker conference we’ve all had those moments when we get fired up by what we’re hearing but then life takes over and we fall back into our old habits. Dr. James Whorley has written a non-denominational guide to help you on your path of spiritual growth. 

Dr. James Whorley – The book is non-denominational. The book passes all racial lines. It was written for the individual. It was written for groups as I’d seen when we began to teach it in our church. I’ve seen different groups grab hold to the book and see the benefits of the book. The book is for anyone. I’m putting it out there. I want anyone who is learning to take this book along with you. Grab hold of it and learn and get information that will help you with your spiritual growth. 

Alright so now you have a pretty good idea of why he wrote the book and who he wrote the book for but how do you know whether or not it will work for you? Because, according to Dr. Whorley, it’s already been tested.

Dr. James Whorley – When I was writing the book I did lesson by lesson with our congregation. Me and my wife, we took the book and we worked it ourselves as a couple but also I took the book to the church and worked it with the entire church and it was exciting to see how people lit up. It was exciting to see people excited by learning new things, new ideas , new things they may not have considered. I believe the book will be great for groups and even for couples working together. and for that point for individuals  who desire to grow to a new level of spirituality so I’m excited about the book. 

Can you feel his passion? It’s hard not to. 

Dr. James Whorley – The Lord woke you up this morning. Believe that. The Lord is watching over you. Believe that. The Lord is a good God. Believe that and understand what you need, look at what he done and it will give you the ability to believe that he will do what you need done. 

Where does all this passion come from?  When he was two years old he was rushed to intensive care, twice.  He was almost electrocuted, twice.  He almost drowned, once.  At the age of nine, he was hit by a truck that was moving over forty miles per hour and was once accidentally locked in a refrigerator that couldn’t be opened from the inside. More than a few brushes with death will turn you into a serious, focused and determined person ready to make every day count.

Doesn’t it seem like we spend most of our lives just trying to figure it all out? You may have sorted out the meaning of everything but if so you are definitely in the minority. Nadia Owen is the subject of our little chats today and she’s put together a very personal, poetic journey in the form of a book titled “Looking Beyond the Clouds”.  In it she has a message for Christian’s and Non-Christian’s as well. 

She says while Christianity is for everyone, it doesn’t mean that being a Christian is easy, it just gives you an incentive to be a better person and to have a purpose.

Nadia Owen (It’s ok) It is o.k. to not always be so happy and it’s ok to doubt your relationship with God or even to be angry with God. 

Nadia Owen (Non-Believers) There’s a lot of division in the world right now and part of that is people having certain presumptions about Christians and Christianity and ‘m hoping to maybe clear the air there a little bit. 

Basically, it’s ok to be human. In fact, it’s important. Questioning our beliefs, questioning our leaders, questioning everything is how we find the truth. Failing and starting again is how we evolve. We weren’t born perfect and she says if you are striving for perfection you’re doing it wrong. Let me clarify that a bit further. If you are a true Christian then your behavior should mirror, reflect and resemble that of Jesus Christ. Now, that is setting the bar pretty high. We are human after all and we need to understand that we are going to make mistakes and that’s ok. People who know us and love us should understand that we are doing the best we can. 

Nadia Owen (Christian) I feel like a lot of Christians feel this double standard of people expect them to to be pompous and phony in a way but when they’re not then the Christians are hoping that least then the other person will understand that they’re not being phony and that they really do believe in what they’re saying but when they do come off as more pompous and don’t really follow what they’re teaching then other people kind of point to them and say you’re not a Christians or this is what Christianity is all about.

Nadia says we are all imperfect and we’re not as different as the world would have us believe. If you’re a Christian with some doubts here’s one I think you’ll enjoy. It’s called IMPERFECT.

The scars are visible 
But this is where you can see his work on me 
He took my past eraser marks and turned it into a more beautiful masterpiece 
This is my story 

The sculptor scratches away night and day 
He started out with an ordinary rock of a rough grey 
But just enough pressure, and the removal of the unwanted 
He works until he gets a diamond that shines brighter than day 

They say I’m perfect 
But I know he’s still working 
Washing me with his blood, repainting me with his grace, etching away so that I’m pleasing to the holy eyes of mercy. 

Nadia Owen (For Mom) I first started writing poems like this at about the time that my mom was diagnosed with cancer and when she was diagnosed it was already pretty developed and she was one of the first people who say my poetry and she kept asking me to show whatever new poem i had and she kept reading them and reading them and eventually she did say that this message should be shared with the world and she made me promise that I would publish a book of my poetry.  

Nadia has been writing poetry since she was twelve years old and while her new book originally set out to fulfill a promise to her mother it soon became a mission to clear up as many misconceptions about Christians and Christianity as possible. Here is one of her poems called Flying Creatures about the ups and downs of life, no matter what your belief system happens to be.

When it comes to children’s stories I have to admit that I’m a sucker for the ones that put you in the perspective of the main character, especially what that character is a toy, an animal or a flower and in today’s case a little blue Christmas Light bulb.  Yes, I am a bit a child at heart like Dian Cooper.

Dian Cooper  – My real name’s Carolyn Dian Cooper

She’s an animal lover and an author with a message to share. 

Dian Cooper –  I’m a child at heart. The books that i write are for children and there’s underlying messages for them in a biblical way. 

Dian is most certainly a Christian. She’s written a number of books including: 

Today we’re talking about “The Christmas Light”. A story that will hopefully remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. 

Dian Cooper – Even though it is Christian based I don’t feel like it’s biased towards the Christian faith because actually Christmas has always been about Jesus’ birthday, I just think we’ve gotten away from why we celebrate Christmas. 

She is right and sometimes it does feel that way. Between the onslaught of holiday themed Rom-Coms released on our favorite streaming channels that follows a very predictable pattern …the holiday bonuses, the elaborate parties and all the marketing messages it can make us lose perspective and in reality it’s not all about Santa Claus and gift getting. 

Dian Cooper  – I’ve watched several little kids get their presents and that’s all their thinking about is what they’re going to get from Santa Clause and that’s not why we celebrate Christmas. It’s part of the joy of Christmas but I feel like our kids have a misconception of what giving is about at Christmas time it’s all about getting. 

So she put her imagination to work and came up with this charming story: 

Excerpt from “The Christmas Light” by Dian Cooper

    “For years, Bright lay in a box in the attic with 

his aunt and uncle, mom and dad, and all his friends,

waiting for Mrs. Smith to come and fetch him. 

He always knew Christmas was near when he saw the first snowflake falling outside through the attic window. It was an octagon-shaped stained glass window with a cross in the middle pane. The sunlight would shine through it in the morning, illuminating a colorful cross on the attic floor. 

He could hear Mrs. Smith singing Christmas carols downstairs in the kitchen while she baked her famousPecan Pies, Pumpkin Pies, 

and Sugar cookies. 

She loved baking, and the smell of sugar cookies filled the air, 

mixed in with the delightful aroma of pumpkin spice and cinnamon. 

The sweet aromas danced their way through the Smith home, all the way up to the attic. Mr. Mouse jumped up into the box where Bright lay tangled up in a web of Christmas lights with his family and friends. “Bright, do you think this is the year? Do ya, hut, do ya?” Mt. Mouse would ask anxiously. 

Bright would glimmer with a slight twinkle of hope

and would always say, “Well, you never know, Mr. Mouse.

Mrs. Smith might remember us this year” And with that tiny sparkle  of hope, Bright would hold on to his twinkle, 

hoping Mrs. Smith would remember him….”

Dian Cooper  – I’m hoping that when I wrote the book and I illustrated the character of Bright that it would draw the children into the cute little character, little sweet faces, and make them want to heir mama, grandma or whoever read them the book. 

I’m sure they will. Dian did all the illustrations herself and they are vivid and colorful — like a children’s book should be. It’s a fun story with a couple of different messages. The first one we talked about, the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of giving but it’s also about hope and family and something else. 

Dian Cooper – There’s an underlying message in there, you know just because we get old doesn’t mean we are thrown away and that goes for our grandparents and elderly parents. They still have a purpose and can shine bright in their own right. 

Okay that too but my favorite message was never give up.

Dian Cooper  – Every child is special in their own way and if they dream they dream never, never, never give up. Never give up. That’s my underlying message in a number of my books. 

All good things. Follow your dreams with passion, respect your elders, learn the power of giving and of course love each other and understand the true meaning of Christmas. It’s a cute story that you can easily see played out on television or in your mind’s eye. 

Dian Cooper  – In our world Christmas time is a time for joy but we also forget about the people that have no families, no joy at Christmas time they find themselves alone. We are never alone. Jesus is always, always with us.

We begin to day with a quote from the Greek Mathematician Archimedes, “Give me a place to stand, and a lever long enough, and I will move the world” 

Steve Wachtel (Archimedes) He was a brilliant man. Thinking about it though I realized that the idea of moving the world, truly moving the world, we need to have something that strikes a number of people and that really relates to. I think poems and songs have that. So I think that’s a better way of moving the world. 

That is Steve Wachtel, author of the book Sandlot Poet. We all have our own ways of moving the world. For Steve it began back in 1976, the year another famous New Yorker released the now classic album Turnstiles featuring the hit song “New York State of Mind”. Of course I’m talking about William Martin Joel. 

Billy Joel chose to use song to move the world and he has been doing that since the early 70’s. Steve has chosen to move the world through poetry and I found some interesting parallels between these two New Yorkers.  Billy Joel was born in the Bronx and grew up on Long Island. Steve Wachtel was born in Brooklyn and also grew up on Long Island. 

Steve Wachtel (School District) I was very fortunate to be in the Farmingdale school district in Long Island and had very fine teachers there who emphasized writing and expression. That was very helpful to me. 

It was there and then when Steve decided he wanted to be a writer but it wasn’t from the seat of a piano bench. It was on a diamond in a New York City park. The moment was captured here in his poem, A Different Glory 

Steve Wachtel (A Different Glory) I was a terrible Little leaguer one hit in three years but I stayed eager to stay with my peers some of who went on to Sandlot glory days looked upon as Gods to be praised for this ability to strike a round ball with a round bat truly a feat denied to those like me non-athlete all stars in fact but today I made some hits to cheers at least in my mind in a different sport that fits me better where I’m included to weave words in my peculiar way into rhyme and schemes that have their say pleasing myself and others it seems. So I’ll never be in the hall of fame and not a Frostian Allstar. At least now in the game, truly and finally a Sandlot Poet. 

Sandlot Poet is the title of his new book and it says a lot about him. 

Steve Wachtel (Sandlot Poet) So a Sandlot poet is someone who has some ability but is not like Robert Frost for example or those who are in the hall of fame as far as Im concerned. It someone who can put words together to please himself and others and um, will maybe not become famous perhaps but will have their say. 

I love that. We don’t have to be famous we just need to be heard and speaking of famous poets, Walt Whitman was also born on Long Island until his family moved to Brooklyn. Was it New York that inspired his introspection and subsequently the quote, “Let your soul stand cool and composed before a million universes.” I don’t know but it was definitely the inspiration for Steve’s poem Morning Becomes Electric. 

Steve Wachtel (Morning Becomes Electric) I wake each early morning to the sound of a Cardinal. The song of a Blue Jay. The twittering of their performing giving sweetness to the start of all my many hopes for the day. The rising sun pauses too to listen. All its harmony. That short space. and I stretch feeling old bones become new again. Grey hairs glisten and all things…by time…briefly returned and my life is graced.

I can relate to that one because it’s how most of my days begin. A cup of coffee in the great outdoors. What is your inspiration and how do you move the world? It doesn’t have to be with a classic album, a world famous volume of poetry or the ability to hit a major league home run. Whatever you do on a daily basis, as long it’s done with the right intentions is probably having a positive impact. Steve Wachtel said it best in his poem Archimedes. 

Steve Wachtel (Archimedes) Archimedes master mathematician transported by his theory proclaimed, “Give me a lever and a place to stand and I’ll move the world”. Move the world? What a notion. High enough to move yourself let alone this spinning top of billions. Archimedes had a wonderful madness, it was his method that was wrong. Move the world? Forget a lever. You gotta use a poem or a song.

So…how you doin’? How’s your health? 

Last week I was having one of those days, you know the kind. Nothing was going right and someone said to me “well, at least you have your health” and you know…as much of a cliche as that is there is a lot of truth in it.

Good health is something to be grateful for. At the very least it’s a lot cheaper to be healthy. Trust me on that. My son is a Diabetic. So today we are going to examine the different aspects of health because according to Dr. Grubbs author of the book Grip Life, there are seven of them and the first one is the most obvious, Physical Health. 

Dr. Grubbs – Physical health can be movement for just about any age because you can do low level exercises if you’re over sixty-five or seventy or what have you. Physical health can certainly relieve stress and it has to do with body wellness. Some people use physical health to maintain their weight. 

One of the areas we tend to take for granted in this country is Mental Health. Poor mental health is a medical condition and we should treat is just like our physical health. It’s too often ignored. There are lots of reasons for that, I’m guessing it’s because we aren’t always in tune with the symptoms and it can be hard to detect. 

Dr. Grubbs – Mental Health I think is one of the most important ones. Because it’s mind wellness. If you don’t have your mind you don’t know what your doing physically, mentally and you may not be able to succeed vocationally because it will influence your employment rating beside that you have financial health and certainly mental health could influence your financial health  especially if your getting that money from a salary or through a job or if you need to master your budget. 

She says the best way to maintain or acquire a normal, productive life is to avoid neglecting any element of your health which includes all seven areas. Physical, Mental, Financial and Vocational health are four of them and based on what you’ve heard so far these are easy enough to understand but what about Social Health? How active are you in your community or with others at work? This is a huge issue. How is your network of family and friends? It’s important to look at. 

Dr. Grubbs – People seem to shun people who have been in mental institutions or have had some mental illnesses in their family now they may not invite you to the sorority or to various different organizations or different types of socials whereas if the group thought you had something to offer to the group might invite you to be a member. 

You might have more to offer than you know. 

Speaking of your community, another aspect of health is Spiritual Health, it’s a factor no matter what you believe. 

Dr. Grubbs – Different people believe in different things. I really don’t try to push my belief on anybody.  I wrote that because I grew up in a Southern family that valued family, valued God and certainly valued education and personally i said well let me check a few bible verses and see if they relate to each of these elements of health and i found out that did and I use those because I certainly believe in Christian living I   thought well if everybody lived by the ten commandments this might be a better world. 

Amen to that…

Dr. Grubbs – Sometimes if you give that stress, talking to somebody who is not gonna tell anybody. you close up in a room all by yourself and talk to God. That has helped me. I don’t know if it’s helped anybody else but i do believe in doing that. That’s how these different elements can influence each other. 

And that’s a key point right there. Understanding the different elements is one thing but understating how they intertwine to affect each other is something else entirely. A good example is the family dynamic. What kind of home did you grow up in? Different families have different dynamics, different values, different structures, rules and beliefs. 

Dr. Grubbs – The head of the family would influence the other people in the family and then those people would live that way from their influence in teaching and influence the community and communities can impact states and states impact nations and nations impact the world so it has a rolling impact on  

Pretty interesting right? Your health, your choices, your life has a far reaching impact. One of my favorite movies is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Clarence, George Bailey’s Angel in Training, once said to him “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?”

When you think about it that way, all of a sudden it’s not about you anymore. It’s your life but it’s also about everyone you come in contact with. Let’s outline a plan for a healthier you. 

Dr. Grubbs – The biggest room in the world is room for improvement. 

Another great quote to remember. The book is called Grip Life and in it there is some space provided for you to write down your improvement plan or areas that you want to work on. It’s all about healthy living for you and for all of us for generations to come.  

Dr. Grubbs – I love sweets when i was growing up and I do now but I now but I know not to pack ice cream in my freezer or bake cakes or whatever because my grandmother would preach that and I notice that said you have too many sweets that’s not good for you, you know I mean one a week but now I have tot have some kind of self control. You have to practice self control and I think the elderly lady was very wise  and she knew what she was talking about  and she would walk every day and all that. She lived to be one hundred years old and her sister lived to be one hundred and seven. I’m thinking well I ain’t gonna get there but I do want to live as long as I can. 

I hope she does get there and I hope you do too. Dr. Elizabeth W. Grubbs has plenty of wisdom to share. She has lived in and out of the United States. She has seen extreme poverty and extreme wealth in the same cities. She has obtained degrees and other experiences in education, counseling, and supervision from Tuskegee University, Livingston University, University of Mexico, and Wayne State University and her book Grip Life is available now at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Xlibiris.com and many other places and that will do it for this edition of Newsgram.
