I really enjoyed my recent conversation with professional soccer player, Amobi Okugo. Off the field, Amobi developed a website, A Frugal Athlete, focused on helping professional athletes manage their money effectively. In this podcast, Amobi shares what he learned from his parents about money, his frugal tendencies and how he handled that first big paycheck after signing his professional contract (spoiler alert: there's no Bentley in his garage!). Amobi's commitment to changing the narrative of the free-spending, high-living athlete is having an impact as teammates and others seek his financial counsel. Enjoy! 

I came across Melissa Santoyo's op-ed in her college paper at Northwestern University and definitely wanted to learn more. In the op-ed, Melissa describes the challenges that first-gen students face in completing the FAFSA and how it can be a hindrance to higher education. She also notes how widespread financial illiteracy is among all undergrads and makes the argument that financial literacy is a privilege which not everyone has access to. This reality is what the community of personal finance educators is trying to change everyday by increasing access at the high school and college levels. These are statements that you would not expect to hear from a professional athlete but that's exactly what New England Patriot Joejuan Williams had to say in a recent article. 

How did he build these mindsets about money? That's where Greg Carson, a personal finance teacher at Father Ryan High School (Nashville, TN), comes in. According to Williams, Carson's class "completely changed my life." NGPF Fellow Vincent Branch has a passion for financial education that became apparent the first time we met at the NGPF Summer Institute earlier this year. As a financial advisor in an earlier life, he saw the tactics used to "sell" financial products and realized how few people knew the right questions to ask. He's preparing his students to be that skeptical consumer as a personal finance teacher at Washington High School (Houston, TX). Since joining NGPF as director of educational outreach in August of 2019, Yanely Espinal has visited close to 100 high school classrooms. In these workshops, she inspires young people through her own personal story and shares the money lessons she learned through the "school of hard knocks." In this podcast, Yanely shares what she learned during these visits, including the money topics that mattered most to young people and the "hooks" she used to engage them. She also explains the creative process that goes into developing her weekly current events resource, FinCap Friday, which is now closing in on 300,000 students since its launch a year ago.
