NGPF’s My Classroom is a 10-15 minute weekly podcast series that will follow the lives of four awesome financial literacy leaders. Each one will share how they advocate for financial literacy and their teaching strategies through COVID. Like the last series, each one is from a different area of the country and a different type of school, but this time you'll hear from a student-teacher, a middle school teacher, a former financial literacy teacher turned administrator, and a state teacher of the year. This brief podcast is designed to inspire you, share ideas, and let you know that you are not alone during this unprecedented school year. Each week a new podcast will be posted for you to listen to on your drive to or from work, on a quick walk, or just when you need a little inspiration and encouragement.
This podcast was produced from an NGPF Speaker series event held in October of 2020 with guests Dan Otter of 403bwise.org and Mark Schug, President of Mark Schug Consulting Services and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The October 22nd Speaker Series marked the conclusion of the inaugural My Classroom Podcast series. The weekly series was 10-15 minutes long and followed the lives and classrooms of four rock star teachers and NGPF Fellows. Each teacher was from a different area of the country, a different type of school, and currently teaching in a different environment (virtual, face-to-face, hybrid) but remain determined to make their learning environment as great as it can be during COVID.
This week I invited Tanya of International Institute of Minnesota, Jenny of Boston Community Leadership Academy (MA) and Heidi of King George High School (VA) to the NGPF Podcast. They shared something in common: each earned NGPF Certifications in 7 different content areas through their work this summer and into the fall. Certification courses are offered by NGPF in Credit, Investing, Advanced Investing, Insurance, Paying for College, Banking and Budgeting and Taxes. In this podcast, you will hear these amazing educators discuss their motivation for taking these courses and the impact these courses had on their instruction this fall. Finally, they will also discuss a secondary benefit of how they have incorporated what they learned in their own financial lives. Enjoy!

Her thoughts are regularly shared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review, just to name a few. She just finished her first book "Time Smart: How to Reclaim Your Time and Live a Happier Life". This conversation was one of a kind -- you'll hear how Dr. Whillans transitioned from appearing in multiple Hollywood movies to teaching at Harvard. She shares her own tips for teaching remotely, how teachers can manage their time and money in a way to maximize their own happiness, and the lessons she believes high school students should learn. You're not going to want to miss this one!

Dr. Pat Page, a current classroom teacher, NGPF Fellow, and former State Teacher of the Year, recently completed her Ph.D. and studied the parents’ perceptions of financial technology to support financial socialization and literacy levels. Together, with FamZoo owner Bill Dwight, they shared what they learned, why it should matter to teachers, and how we can apply it to support our own students. They discuss family socialization examples such as students teaching parents and boiling down what parents can teach their kids into one 4x6 index card.
Should parents pay an allowance? Should they pay for chores? Should parents assess fines to their kids for misbehaving? Find out what Dr. Page and Bill have to say!
