    We pay tribute to Ans Westra - a pioneer of documentary photography in New Zealand. Anna Westra CNZM was born in 1936 in the Netherlands and immigrated to New Zealand in 1957 at the age of 21. Well known for her depictions of Maori life in the 20th century, her prominence as an artist was amplified by her controversial 1964 children's book Washday at the Pa. Ans died yesterday at her home in Wellington aged 86 years old - survived by her three children and six grandchildren. With us now to pay tribute to her life and work - is her agent David Alsop of Suite Gallery

  • DOC urges extreme care in the outdoors
    The Department of Conservation is urging people to respect closures and take extreme care in outdoor areas affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. DoC is currently assessing its tracks and other infrastructure, and has blanket closures in many areas affected by the Cyclone, including much of Hawke's Bay and Tairawhiti. DoC's Director for Heritage and Visitors Andy Roberts outlines the reasons to be cautious.

  • MetService details latest downpours and thunderstorms
    Areas north of Auckland were hit by a sudden torrential downpour this afternoon causing surface flooding and slips. More heavy rain and possibly severe thunderstorms are expected to hit Tairawhiti and Hawke's Bay tomorrow. There are particular concerns for the Esk Valley and Wairoa, with a mandatory evacuation in place for the Esk Valley. Metservice Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane provides an update.
