Nights

Twice the value tonight as we're joined by both Dana Johannsen AND Peter Lamp who share their sporting highlights of 2019.

Bryan's look back on what made the news in the past decade as we wrap up the twenty teens.

It's already been a tempestuous summer in Australia with droughts and fires. Bryan checks in with the people on the ground about what it's like and we might be expecting.

To mark 2019 as the year of the Periodic Table, RNZ Nights has teamed up with the MacDiarmid Institute to bring you Element of The Week. Tonight, Jonathan Falconer. MacDiarmid Institute Researcher and University of Otago Postdoctoral Fellow introduces us to the element Radium and the reason for tonight's sonic tonic dedicated to Radio.

Sandra Sarla has the stories making the news in Germany.

Fergus Barrowman is back with us with his pick of the best from the Jazz world.

Bette Dam is an investigative journalist who having worked on and in Afghanistan as a war reporter, questions whether western journalism only helps to promote war.

Historian Gavin Mclean was at one time a regular contributor on Nights, joining us every three months or so with another fascinating story from our maritime history. Sadly Gavin died earlier this year. His death left several books uncompleted, including the latest edition of Shipwrecked - New Zealand's Maritime Disasters. Kynan Gentry, one time pupil of Gavin and long time friend, took on the task of completing the work.

If you have spent any time in any river or stream you have probably seen these little guys. Tiny dark brown turrets clinging to the stones in the shallow water, or carving little pathways through the mud, lovingly licking up algae and debris. Stella McQueen joins us to tell us more.

Peter Lamp joins us once again with this weather eye on the weekend's sport.
