  • Your Annual Plan Won't Work If It's A List of Activities (And What To Do Instead)

Are you starting next year with a plan or just a list of to-dos? In this episode, I break down why focusing on outcomes—not just activities—can transform your organization’s strategy and impact. Too often, nonprofit leaders get stuck in activity-based planning that leaves them overwhelmed and disconnected from their mission. But when you center your plans around concrete outcomes, everything changes. I’ll explain the power of outcomes-based planning and how it brings focus, prioritizes resources, and provides clear ways to track progress. If you want your team to feel aligned, purposeful, and effective next year, this episode is for you.

    What You’ll Learn:

    • Why outcomes-based planning provides clarity and focus for your team.
    • How focusing on results helps prioritize resources like time and money.
    • The role of outcomes in tracking progress and adapting strategies as needed.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Outcomes give direction. They shift you from a scattered to-do list to a meaningful plan.
    2. Resources are optimized. You invest in what truly matters, avoiding wasted effort.
    3. Outcomes enable accountability. Clear results allow you to measure progress and pivot when necessary.

    Step-by-Step Process:

Here’s how to shift to outcomes-based planning:

    1. Start with the End Result: Ask, “Where do we want to be in a year?” Define clear, concrete outcomes that align with your mission.
    2. Work Backwards to Identify Activities: Once the outcomes are clear, determine the activities required to achieve them.
    3. Align Resources to Priorities: Evaluate where to invest your time, money, and energy based on which activities deliver the greatest impact.
    4. Track and Adjust: Monitor progress towards your outcomes and be ready to pivot if certain activities aren’t delivering results.

  • Why Having a Strong Individual Giving Program Is Non-Negotiable

In this episode, I’m diving deep into why individual giving programs are essential for nonprofit organizations—especially those with budgets under $2M. Drawing from my own experience weathering the 2008 recession, I’ll share why individual donors provide one of the most stable and sustainable revenue streams for mission-driven organizations. But here’s the catch: many nonprofits struggle with individual giving because they’ve been taught to approach it the wrong way. From building meaningful relationships to nurturing a true community of supporters, this episode breaks down what it really takes to create a thriving individual giving program. If you’ve ever felt like your fundraising efforts just don’t pay off, this episode is for you!

    What You’ll Learn:

    • Why individual giving programs are critical for financial stability and growth.
    • Common myths about individual donor programs that lead to frustration and burnout.
    • Practical strategies for building a community of passionate, committed supporters.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Individual donors provide stability during economic and political upheaval because their giving is rooted in shared values and affinity for your mission.
    2. Successful fundraising requires more than just asking for money—nurturing relationships is key.
    3. Viewing individual donors as partners in your mission shifts fundraising from transactional to transformative.

Step-by-Step Process for Building an Individual Giving Program:

    1. Identify the Right People: Focus on finding individuals who are naturally aligned with your mission and values, not just those you know personally.
    2. Build Relationships: Use tools like email newsletters, webinars, and live events to nurture connections and create a sense of community around your work.
    3. Make the Ask: Once you’ve cultivated relationships, confidently invite your supporters to partner with you through donations.

  • How To Talk About Growth Beyond Just Numbers

As nonprofit leaders, we often equate growth with bigger numbers—serving more people, running more programs, or expanding reach. But is that truly the story of impact your organization wants to tell? In this quick episode, I explore why growth doesn’t have to mean more numbers and how you can frame your nonprofit’s growth in a way that feels aligned with your mission. I’ll share six different modes of growth to help you articulate your progress and impact to funders and stakeholders without feeling boxed in by traditional metrics. Whether you’re in a refinement stage, focused on depth over breadth, or driving policy change, this episode will help you tell a more meaningful growth story.

    What You’ll Learn:

    • Why numbers aren’t the only way to define or measure growth.
    • How to align your growth story with your mission and outcomes.
    • Six alternative modes of growth that resonate with funders and stakeholders.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Growth is not always about serving more people—it can mean doing deeper, more transformative work.
    2. Refinement and reflection are vital phases of growth and shouldn’t be overlooked.
    3. Nonlinear growth—like increasing influence or sustainability—can be just as impactful as expanding numbers.

  • How To Take Control of Your Calendar & Feel Less Overwhelm

We’ve all felt the frustration of having too much to do and not enough time to do it. As nonprofit leaders, this overwhelm can keep us from focusing on high-impact work. In this episode, I introduce the Focus Filter Framework—a straightforward 4-step process to help you clear away distractions, prioritize tasks that align with your goals, and take control of your calendar. By breaking down your task list, aligning it with your goals, and making realistic time decisions, you can regain control and focus on transformational work instead of getting lost in the weeds. It’s all about strategic prioritization. Tune in to learn how to simplify your to-do list and get more done without the constant stress.

    What You’ll Learn:

    • How to identify and clear out non-essential tasks
    • Practical strategies for aligning your daily tasks with your goals
    • How to manage your time realistically and avoid burnout

    Key Takeaways:

    • Make intentional choices to prioritize high-leverage tasks.
    • Assess the time you actually have vs. the time you need for tasks.
    • Learn to delegate, delete, or defer low-priority work to stay focused.

    4-Step Focus Filter Framework:

    1. Make a Comprehensive List: Capture all the tasks on your plate, big and small. Be honest and thorough.
    2. Goal Alignment: Filter your tasks through your core goals—if something doesn’t serve your goals, delegate or delete it.
    3. Time Reality Check: Calculate the realistic number of hours available to work, and assign time blocks for each task.
    4. Time Block Triage: Adjust your task list by freeing up time, shrinking the list, or a mix of both. Focus on urgent, high-leverage tasks.

  • What To Do When The Team You Have Is No Longer The Team You Need

At some point in your nonprofit's growth, you’ll realize that the team that got you this far might not be the one to take you to the next level. In this episode, I walk you through the crucial steps to move from the team you have to the team you need, so your organization can scale successfully. We’ll unpack how to rework your current team, add capacity where it’s needed, and avoid the common mistake of treating these two strategies as one. By the end of this episode, you'll know how to assess, map, prune, and plan your team for smoother, more strategic growth.

    What You’ll Learn:

    • How to recognize when your current team is holding you back from growth
    • The essential differences between adding new people and reworking existing roles
    • A clear process for aligning your team structure with your nonprofit’s goals

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Reworking vs. Adding Capacity: Reworking your team is about getting people in the right roles, while adding capacity ensures you have enough hands on deck. Both are critical, but they need to be handled separately.
    2. Start with Role Mapping: Before you look at people, map out the roles your organization truly needs based on your goals. This gives you clarity and prevents misalignment.
    3. Don’t Avoid the Hard Decisions: Sometimes, the team you started with isn’t the team that will get you to the next level. Making tough choices now will pay off in long-term success.

Steps to Build Your Growth Team:

    1. Assess: Start by looking at your strategic goals. What outcomes are you aiming for, and what skills are necessary to achieve them? Without a clear understanding of the work that needs to get done, you’re flying blind.
    2. Role Mapping: Separate roles from the people currently on your team. Create a roadmap for the positions that need to be filled, considering both current and future needs. I always say: role clarity is step one to building a high-functioning team.
    3. Pruning: This is the tough part, but it’s necessary. If someone on your team isn’t a fit for any of the essential roles, or if they can’t be trained up to fit, it’s time to make the hard call. It’s never easy, but clinging to misaligned team members slows your growth.
    4. Hire Strategically: Now that you’ve pruned and mapped, you can bring in the right people. Whether you need full-time staff or fractional support, hire with precision. Think about the skills you need now and the flexibility to scale as you grow.

  • Has Your Growth Plateaued? Here’s How to Fix It

One of the biggest challenges growing nonprofits face is plateauing—doing all the right things but not breaking through to the next level of impact and funding. In this episode, I talk about the core reason behind this: a lack of strategic alignment. I explain why organizations need to align three critical elements—strategic direction, a true cost financial roadmap, and a revenue model. When these pillars work together, nonprofits can achieve the kind of growth that’s both sustainable and impactful. Tune in to learn the keys to creating that alignment and avoid common mistakes that keep nonprofits stuck.

    What You’ll Learn:

    • How to align your annual plan, budget, and fundraising strategy
    • Why strategic alignment is critical to organizational growth
    • Key signs that your organization is stuck and how to move forward

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Strategic alignment between your annual plan, budget, and revenue model fuels sustainable growth.
    2. A true cost budget, not just last year’s budget stretched thin, is essential for making smart decisions.
    3. Your fundraising efforts need to be deeply connected to your impact story to build trust with donors.
    4. The synergy between your pillars helps your board become better advocates and fundraisers.
    5. Aligning these elements empowers you to make bolder multi-year fundraising asks.

    Step-by-Step Process for Strategic Alignment:

    1. Strategic Direction: Clearly define your impact goals and strategies. These should be captured in your annual plan, aligned with your long-term strategic plan.
    2. Financial Roadmap: Create a true cost budget that reflects what it will take to achieve those goals, not just a rework of last year’s numbers.
    3. Revenue Model: Develop a strategy for how you’ll bring in the necessary resources—identify your potential supporters, craft your messaging, and plan how you’ll ask for contributions.
    4. Alignment: Ensure that all three elements (annual plan, budget, revenue model) tell the same story about your organization’s impact.
