On location from New York (okay, New Jersey)! After a visit to MLS headquarters, I fill you in on the latest on Solidarity Payments and Training Compensation from the MLS perspective (spoiler, the league is optimistic, even if the MLSPA and US Soccer aren't), the status of the the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations (spoiler, it's not going well) a review of the Seattle Sounders' loss to NYCFC, as well as my misadventures exploring the city for the first time ever (hijinks ensued).

This weekend in NWSL action, you have the latest installment of Reign FC versus their rival Portland Thorns FC. The NWSL version of the Cascadia rivalry is always a high stakes affair and Reign FC's recent run of form makes the first meeting of the 2019 season a top four encounter. Portland is at the top of the league table, Reign FC are third.
In order to talk about this matchup, we invited our friends Katelyn Best and Tyler Nguyen, hosts of the podcast Red Smoke Radio, to shoot the breeze about it, the other matches in the league this weekend, and a little thing called the FIFA World Cup Semif-inals.
And as is customary with every guest we've had on the podcast, we make Katelyn & Tyler put on their thinking caps with our series of hard-hitting and fun questions.

  • Nos Audietis, episode 299: Finally something fun to talk about

We finally have something nice to talk about, even if the Sounders made us sweat through 96 minutes before giving it to us. Kelvin Leerdam delivered the winner in the 6th minute of stoppage time, giving the Sounders their first win in six weeks and ending a four-game all-competition losing streak and pulling them within two points of second-place LA Galaxy.

Almost as impressive as the, was the way they got it. The Sounders tied a season-high with 24 shots, including 14 from inside the penalty area. That doesn’t even include that absolute golazo from 16-year-old Danny Leyva, who was robbed of his first career goal by VAR. Speaking of Leyva, he was part of a virtual Sounders youth movement as they fielded their youngest starting lineup of the year with Gustav Svensson the only out field player who was at least 30. It was also a relatively cheap group, as 66 percent of the Sounders payroll was unavailable for one reason or another.

We discussed all of this as well as taking questions from readers ... which included our fictional co-rec team made up of current Sounders and Reign players.

The Women's and Men's National teams are heading towards the business end of their respective tournaments, having reached the knockout stages of the World Cup and Gold Cup. While the performances on the field have been solid, the foundation at US Soccer headquarters was rocked by allegations of mismanagement and nepotism. In this episode of the Socceresq Podcast, Miki takes a look at the reasons for the summer of discontent at Soccer House.

  • Coffee & Valkyries, Episode 6
The group stage of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup is almost at an end. And boy is it going out in style.
The group stage match between Scotland and Argentina looked to be in the bag with Scotland having a three-goal lead and ensuring their place in the knockout stages. Then the final 26 minutes descended into chaos the likes the world had never seen in any major international tournament with the world's audience.
On this episode of "Coffee & Valkyries," we try to make sense of those final 26 minutes that were controversial to say the least.
We also preview the weekend's NWSL matches, of course highlighted with Reign FC's road trip to the Chicago Red Stars, which now boasts a new player in midfielder Savannah McCaskill.

  • Episode 298: Not much good to discuss

It’s been almost a month since we last recorded, so apologies for that. We haven’t missed talking about anything good, though. The Sounders have not won since our last show, and are now riding a four-game losing streak across all competitions as they prepare for their next game on June 29.

We don’t have much good news to discuss. The latest gut punch is news from Miki Turner that Will Bruin suffered a “serious” ACL injury, which means he’s at least out for the forseeable future and probably the rest of the year. That’s on the heels of a loss to the Portland Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup and three losses to close out the first half of the year, all on the road, all by one goal and each frustrating for their own reasons.

    So let’s get to talking.

  • The Socceresq Podcast (Episode 4): Crew saved and Austin grows
The SaveTheCrew movement captured the imagination of soccer fans all across the country. In Columbus, after Anthony Precourt announced he was attempting to move the team to Austin, the fanbase rose up and--along with some passionate city officials--worked to keep the team where they started. Indeed, they on the cusp of securing a massive new stadium and training complex that will keep the team there for decades to come.
It turned out to be a win-win for both cities, as Precourt and MLS managed to negotiate a deal with Austin to build a stadium which will house a MLS team starting in 2021.
So both cities have teams, will have new stadiums to play in and it seems like the saga has come to an end. But everyone loves a good epilogue, so I called up two reporters who have been following the story. Chris Bils writes for the Austin Statesman and covers about Austin FC, while Jacob Myers  covers the Crew for the Columbus Dispatch. We had a great conversation talking about how we got here, and where things go.

  • Coffee & Valkyries, Episode 5
There is still a lot of soccer left to be played for Reign FC as they look to make a run and climb up the league table. Partnerships on the field are starting to come together and the hope is results will follow. However in the case of forwards Jaycie Johnson and Shea Groom, the duo might as well be sitcom stars.
On this episode of "Coffee & Valkyries," we talk with the duo about the United States' opening campaign in the FIFA World Cup and the controversy of the reigning champions winning their first match with such a wide margin. You will also learn about the origins of the Reign FC Book Club, what they're currently reading, and if you thought Jess Fishlock's stance on pineapple on pizza was something, wait until you hear Jaycie Johnson's reaction to the question.
