Have you been told to lose weight or that you are not ‘sick enough’ because of your Body Mass Index?
Well, you’re not alone.
Today’s guest tells us about where BMI comes from and why it may not be a helpful health indicator. Dr Natasha Larmie is a GP with over 20 years of medical experience. You only need to scroll so far on any form of self-proclaimed fitness or “wellness” social media account to be bombarded with the message of “calories in, calories out”.
We are told that if we “eat less” and “move more” the idealised body that we are sold within Instagram squares is ours. All we need to do is engage in endless counting and stay in near constant motion.
This notion fundamentally oversimplifies the determinants of energy balance, removes any sense of bodily intuition or knowledge – and, in so doing, almost roboticizes us.
It preaches that our bodies are metabolically standardised and that we are all the same in how we process and assimilate every single micromanaged morsel - but we're not!
In this episode, Cassie and Ariana share their top four tips to help you move away from calorie counting, feel more empowered around food and start trusting your body again.
Even if you have deleted every calorie tracking app, they share tips on how to shift your mindset to prevent staying stuck pseudo-dieting.
We hope you enjoy the episode!
