  • Chatter that Matters' Tony Chapman pursues his mission of positivity and possibility
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

It's hard to be positive when the headlines are filled with a shooting war in Europe and strategies to avoid war in Asia. Oh ya, and we can't forget COVID, bank failures and threats to democracy.

So, that's why we sit down with Tony Chapman, host and podcast producer of Chatter that Matters.

I had the privilege of working with Tony when he launched his series in the Summer of 2019. I wear my "founding producer" label as a badge of honour when I see the show topping podcast charts around the world some three and a half years later.

Today, 160 epsiodes later, Tony's relentless mission is to focus on positivity and lessons learned from ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

  • Ron De Santis is the Second Coming of Trump
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

Anyone who thought you could write-off Donald Trump needs to give it another thought.

Hamline University Political Science and Constitutional Law Professor David Schultz says Trump's appearance at last week's Conservative Political Action Coalition gathering made it abundantly clear, Trump controls the conservative base in the United States. Schultz says Trump's message was almost messianic.

But Trump's grip on the GOP doesn't seem to faze Florida Governor Ron De Santis, who appears determined to challenge Trump for the Republican Party nomination. De Santis's "anti-woke" campaign is the second coming of Trump's MAGA battle cry.

  • Former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne on the future of Ontario's Liberal Party and the future of the GTA
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

Former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne weighs in on the state of the Liberal movement and Ontario.

    ALSO
    • Wynne admits she prefers the delegated convention. She doesn't think she'd have won the OLP leadership in 2013 if it had been a one-member-one-vote convention.
    • She thinks Trudeau mishandled the question of whether China has meddled in Canadian elections.
    • Toronto's next mayor will have to be a consensus builder but needs to be more aggressive than John Tory.
    • She's not endorsing anyone, but says Bonnie Crombie would make a great leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier of the province.
    • Above all, Kathleen Wynne is enjoying her private citizen life after politics spending more time with her family and grand kids.

  • Can you have too many friends?
    Today on NOW & NEXT

    • A Richmond Hill woman is on a mission to make 52 friends over 52 weeks. It made me do a self-audit on the friends in my life. I've got a lot of people in my life I would call a friend and, in fact, I've probably got something close to a dozen GOOD friends. I came away feeling pretty lucky:)
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs - not so lucky. One day after settling their roster to make the final run towards the Stanley Cup Playoff - one of their key acquisitions is out of the lineup with a broken finger. What makes it worse is Ryan O'Reilly has his digit in a cast thanks to a friendly fire slap shot from Auston Matthews! As one local columnist wrote "It's never easy. It's the Leafs!"

    • One-member-one-vote or a delegated convention? How should the OLP choose its next leader? The party will spell out the details at this weekend's AGM in Hamilton.
    • Why hasn't the Premier changed the municipal election rules to require sitting city councillors to give up their seats if they want to run for the Mayor's chair?

  • Erin and I gave a 20 minute talk: No prep. No notes:)
    Today on NOW & NEXT

    • Erin and I had the great opportunity to speak to the Forestry for the Future National Stakeholders at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto. I dare say everyone in the room was a Leaf fan no matter where they came from. This gave a whole new meaning to Leaf Nation!
    • ALSO: Congratulations to the CBC team in Ottawa for their investigative story about the joint replacement clinic being set up in The Ottawa Hospital. There are more than a few questions about how we pay for and staff the clinic.
    • AND, Niagara Region has declare a State of Emergency for Homelessness, Mental Health and Addiction. Good call. But the SOE has no teeth. The province and the feds should be responding to this state of emergency the same way they did when the pandemic hit us.

  • City Councillors MUST resign their seats if they're going to run for Mayor! Are you with me? Lindsay Broadhead is in the Yes column
    Today on NOW & NEXT:
Communications veteran Lindsay Broadhead weighs in on what Toronto needs in its next mayor.
Lots of name being kicked around as possible candidates and plenty of them are City Councillors.

Is it wrong that MPs and MPPs who run for the job have to resign their seats AND the councillors get to run their mayoral campaigns while hanging onto their council seat?

Of course it is! Sitting councillors shouldn't be able to run for Mayor while holding a seat on council. Resign. Put some skin in the game.
