  • Wanna have a chat over coffee? We can talk about Porter Airline's Halifax to YYZ failure!
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

The SSN team is coming off an historic weekend. It's the FIRST TIME since we launched the Network in April 2021 that we all met face to face, as in IN PERSON!

We attended Podcamp Toronto at Toronto Metropolitan University. It was a great opportunity to meet "our kind". Also graet to see the excitement around podcasting. I sat in on a lots of terrific discussions but the BEST takeaway was in the first session on Saturday morning.

Tom Webster, from the Sounds Profitable podcast, gave a talk on getting to know your audience!

So, I'm going to follow up. You have an open invitation to chat over coffee. Almost like an Ask Me Anything except I'm going to follow Tom's advice literally - and get to know you!

If you're interested, shoot me an email [email protected]. Make "Coffee Chat with Dave" the Subject line and we'll endevour to carve out fifteen minutes or so to chat!
You can also connect via social media. @DaveTrafford finds me on Twitter, IG and Facebook. I'm also easy to find on LinkedIn, if that's where you play:)

    ALSO, in this episode..
I'm a Porter Airlines fan, but OMG the inaugural Halifax to YYZ round trip was a complete and utter Cluster F##K.

Keith Leslie at CHCH-TV, John Wright SVP Maru Public Opinion, Sabrina Nanji, Publisher and Editor of the Queen’s Park Observer and SSN Chief Executive Producer Dave Trafford are around the table.

    • The New Democrats seem to think they'll get a different answer from the Integrity Commissioner to the same complaint about the Ford family "stag and doe".
    • Meanwhile, the Minister of Health has NO answers, NO guarantees that privately operated surgery clinics will poach medical staff from hospitals.
    • The Liberals would like you to think they're circling the wagons in anticipation of the as-yet-unannounced leaderhip race. But the party's circling the bowl.

  • One year into Russia's war in Ukraine
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

David Schultz, professor of political science and US constitutional law at Hamline University in Minnesota weighs in on the year long war in Ukraine. How is it affecting and informing domestic and international politics for the Biden administration? David says this has become a proxy war between NATO and Russia and, if recent history tells us anything, this war of attrition may well stretch into the next decade.

Is China postioning itself to be the broker to stop the shooting, if not the war?

Also, GOP Representative Majory Taylor Greene says it's time for the US states to get a divorce from Washington. It's easy to dismiss her as a fringe voice but she speaks for a growing constituency. Is sucession in the US's near future? And while we're at it, Canada's facing it's own "Quiet Revolution" of sorts as the federal-provincial relationships outlined in the BNA Act can't keep up with the pressures and expectations of the 21 century. What will the borders and maps look like by the end of the time Americans marks 300 years of independence in 2076?

    • Nevefr thought of Don Lemon at CNN as a "shock jock". He doubled down on his statement that women are in the prime in their 20s, 30s, maybe their 40s when commenting on Nikki Haley's decision to challenge Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. He's been pulled off the air and is undergoing "training".
    • The NY Post has done a bit of a sting operation, publishing photos of a man the paper says presents as Kayla Lemieux, a shop teacher at Oakvill Trafalgar High School who has made international headlines because she attends class wearing incredibly large prosthetic breasts.
    • AND, broadcaster/journalist/comms pro and friend to the show Bob Reid is on the road to recovery. Bob was a living kidney donor. We're hoping he'll share the story of his experience on an upcoming episode of Now & Next!

  • Should City Councillors have to resign if they want to run for the Mayor's Chair in Toronto?
    Today on NOW & NEXT:

Should City Councillors have to resign if they want to run for the Mayor's Chair in Toronto?

    OF COURSE THEY SHOULD!
But let's play this out. There is already a long list of current City Councillors, Ontario MPPs and federal MPs who are apparently considering a run for Mayor in Toronto. Only one, (if any of them), will be successful. Are they all willing to quit their current legislative assembly jobs for a shot at succeeding John Tory?

Does that mean we're more likely to see "name" candidates from the private sector who, at most, may only have to take a "leave of absence" and have a guaranteed gig if the mayoral bid goes south?

    Also today,

The Toronto Police Service is spending more than $300 thousand dollars to produce a podcast series.
I guested on Jerry Agar's show on Newstalk 1010 to talk about the strategy of producing podcasts for brands and whether TPS is doing it right.

Also, could Soccer Canada be any worse at managing the optics around paying the Olympic Champions Women's Team less than the Men's Team?

Are we overblowing all the attentions paid to "unidentified" objects being shot down over North America? Barb's worried because when she hears some in Washington referring to "extra terrestrials".

And the Super Bowl half time show gets a solid "meh"!
