Old Gamer’s Almanac

Both of our GOTY's for this year were supposed to be one episode but we finally realized that that episode would be 6 hours long and so we've split it up!

This week, 16 of the best games from 1994 go head to head until we determine which of them was the best. SEGA vs Nintendo. RPGs vs Action games. There's a lot to cover! Next week, the 1994 GOTY will compete with the 2024 GOTY to determine, once and for all, which year was best...

This week the boys are tired because they recorded all of the episodes in one night but we still get a lot of good talk into this one. We're talking about all the random 2024 games we didn't get to this year either because we didn't play it, didn't finish it, or just didn't get it into the podcast schedule! It's a fun one. In the opening Hunter calls his friend a "dumb guy" but I want you to know it was meant with love.  See you again soon for our goty episode and the re-ranking of the list episode!

This episode opens with discussion of PULP FICTION, which has notably never been discussed on a podcast by boys before so get ready for that. The rest of the episode is a silly romp where the boys round up some of the games they didn't have time for that came out thirty years ago. EJ throws some joke entries in there, and Sun gets confused about the rules. It's a classic!

This episode is a lot of fun. Listen to Matt, Hunter, EJ, and Sun as they draft their picks to decide the game of the year for 1994 and 2024. Later this month their draft picks will face off to decide which is best but for now the boys recap both years and this project generally. It's the first part in what will be a four part finale run with all boys present! Also EJ had two of his wisdom teeth removed earlier today. So there is that.

IT'S TIME TO GET FANTAZIO. Hunter and Sun sit down this week to talk about the surprise Atlus JRPG hit and close down the end of the season with our last regular 2024 game! We had a great time and this episode features our final normal list segment and boy can you feel it, we're very excited about our end of the year episodes so stay tuned! Also hit up our patreon to submit games to the 2024 and 1994 Everywheel so that we can determine what the GOTY is for both years!

This week Matt, EJ, and Hunter sit down to talk about a stone-cold classic that everyone loves. DONKEY KONG. It's a really silly one and I hope you listen to it while gettin' some much needed potassium.

We're close to the end of the year and we had a late surprise GOTY contender in Sony and Team Asobi's Astro Bot. A character and studio previously relegated to tech demos for Sony were finally given the reins to their own full game and they completely knocked it out of the park. We're obsessed with this little and I'm ready for the return of the mascot platformer. Sony, you've maybe won over a new crony...

It's a U.S. Election Day spectacular as Hunter and game designer Cole Wehrle (Root, Oath, Arcs) sit down to talk about one of the foundational games of the RTS genre. Does it hold up? Did it see the future? How good is it? All will be answered this week!

Stay tuned after the discussion for the announced date of the Age of Empires 2 SMASHATHON and how we'll be changing the show for 2025.

This week Matt and Hunter sit down to double up and talk about two exciting games from the before times! One is a Capcom platformer with real good art and the other is a pre-Warcraft Blizzard console game in the style of Another World. This one was recorded in person and has a real excited feel to it.

This week we have two of our Game Dev friends from Leder Games: Cole Wehrle and Nick Brachmann and we're talkin' deep on some UFO 50. In this show four souls trade stories of their experiences with a bygone game studio that never was. I won't mince words, I love this game and I really think you should check it out.
