Old Gamer’s Almanac

We're getting into some more recent off-topic stuff this week with a look at the emotional narrative game OXENFREE II. This game has charm and lots of heart but be prepared for spoilers because Hunter and Sun dig into the meat of this story game to such an extent that I feel like you could be kinda mad about it if you listened. So brace yourself buddy. Also just feel free to play the dang thing if you want to!

SUMMER HAS BEGUN AND WE'RE STARTING COLD. This week the Sanders brothers are talkin' their favorite old Hockey game NHL '94 for the SNES and Genesis. They also sorta talk about NHL '95 and '96. They also just kind of talk about hockey in general. It's real good chill one and it sets the stage for a wonderful summer of fun episodes about all kinds of stuff.

Come see Hunter do standup and see this show live!

It's time for our 2024 follow-up to Super Metroid, this year's PUZZLE SEARCH ACTION GAME ANIMAL WELL. We love this game and we recommend it if you like puzzles and atmosphere. We got good energy in this one so get ready to have fun and enjoy our hijinks. Our Animal Well episode is going to be late this week due to Matt literally getting hit with a tornado. It sucks so be nice to him. As an alternative we're going to go ahead and release our April Patreon bonus episode which is about the Three Colours Trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski. If you love video games then you'll love a discussion about these 30 year old psychological drama art-films.

Special thanks to our guest and old friend, Andrew Camarillo!

It's Matt and EJ together, in person! We've been on a quest recently to gain more experience with the "Metroidvania" or "Search/Action" genre and this felt like one of the most important pieces of homework on our list. How does hold up all these years later?

This maybe isn't a fair game to call a 2024 release since it's just entering Early Access, but we'll call this the state of Hades 2 in May of 2024. Hades spent multiple years in an Early Access that resulted in one of the favorite games of 2020, so it's safe to assume the team behind it can be trusted with this kind of task. But what does it mean to follow up Hades?

We got Hunter, Matt, and EJ together for this beatdown on a Sega Genesis Classic, STREETS OF RAGE 3. We rehash some debates on whether this genre is even good and talk at length about how we feel about SoR's place in the beat-em-up canon. We got some good music in this one even! Also new poll has been posted to the patreon for those of you who would like to vote on this month's bonus episode!

We've got a big strategy one for y'all today! Hunter and Cole sit down to talk about Cole's 1994 roots and chow down on what exactly make X-Com: UFO Defense one of the greatest strategy games of all time. It's always a delight to have Cole on and this episode is no exception. Enjoy!

BIG SPOILERS: WHOLE THING IS SPOILERS

This episode has been owed to you all for a long time! We didn't forget, we were saving it for a week where we needed some extra time. I have an episode on X-Com cooking but I needed more prep time. Enjoy this discussion of the original Last of Us between Hunter and Sun, it meanders and spends a lot of time talking about story and narrative but it was a fun discussion, if you needed us to really nail this game you could always just watch the action button review instead.

This week we have a real silly episode for you. We're talking about the arcade and snes versions of NBA JAM but also we talk about a lot of crazy stuff. This one is heavy on nostalgia and gets pretty specific. Very good episode if you like our more comedy focused vibes.
