Derrick spends 3 days with Jody Smith Guide Service hunting a blacktail deer deep in the logging country of Western Oregon just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Jody’s family moved to the area as German immigrants in the 1840s via the National Land Claim and he was born and raised hunting and loving firearms with his father and grandfather.

Jody said he hosts a lot of clients who are trying to complete their hunting slams and still need a blacktail deer or a Roosevelt elk. He’s a hunting or fishing guide year round based on the seasons and specializes in Roosevelt elk, blacktail deer, and Rio turkey as well as salmon, sturgeon and smallmouth fishing on the Umpqua River.

Derrick and Jody talk about how times have changed just since the 1970s and how 5th grade Jody bought a rifle from an older fellow on the school bus for $25 and then had his principal hang onto it for him until he could pick it up for his school bus ride home.

Towards the end and in true Oregon fashion, Derrick and Jody get rained on as Jody tells heartfelt and emotional stories about learning gun safety from his grandfather as well as his most memorable client who was dying from cancer and was blessed with a successful Roosevelt elk in the most perfect of circumstances.

Derrick lived in western Oregon for 2.5 years and never had the chance to harvest a good representation of a blacktail buck. This trip fulfilled that dream and Jody and Derrick share the adventure.

In this episode, Derrick dives deep into the world of Western hunting with none other than the seasoned expert and gun guru, Hazer Bulkley. Get ready for an enlightening conversation that covers everything from rifle calibers to barrel configurations to the lightweight rifle craze, and a special spotlight on the mighty 22 Creedmoor—an absolute game-changer in the world of hunting calibers. Derrick and Hazer explore its merits, applications, and why it's becoming a favorite among hunters who demand nothing but the best.

Hazer’s career started as a barrel guy with his father-in-law, who was the original founder of what is now Benchmark Barrels. He has lived and breathed the rural lifestyle of western Wyoming, building guns and guiding hunts. Hazer has shot through two barrels with just the 22 Creedmoor caliber itself and he talks about how many shots it took to do so.

Derrick and Hazer also recount Hazer’s freshman year of high school when he drew a moose and bighorn sheep tag in the same year, both incredibly rare tags.

Don't miss out on this epic discussion with humble and humorous Hazer Bulkley.

Derrick uses JM Ballistics calculator to discuss drop, velocity and wind drift differences and which caliber is ideal for what style of hunting as well as recoil expectations.

Occasionally, an entrepreneur at heart will stumble upon a concept that they can’t believe doesn’t yet exist. So they create it. With a team of investors and co-founders, Jonathan Lusk created an “AirBNB for ranches and hunting experiences” concept. Through his company, BirdDog Adventures, he is connecting landowners who have game/lodges/guides/food with hunters who need places to hunt and make memories.

Jonathan’s heart for friendship, community, and family exudes from him as he talks about the heart and vision behind BirdDog. A yell leader at Texas A&M to an MBA at Rice to Goldman Sachs to launching a finance company, Jonathan’s wide range of life experience and business acumen helped him understand what was important to landowners and hunters alike, and he’s been having fun becoming a hunter later in life as well.

He talks about the essence behind the love for hunting - how the time in the outdoors with friends and family is life changing.

We all decided on this side of the podcast that we need to be real life friends with Andrew McKean. Andrew conveyed a curious spirit and kind approach - a true journalist heart. He has traveled the world and had once-in-a-lifetime experiences while serving as Hunting and Conservation Editor for Outdoor Life Magazine, Hunting Editor for Strung magazine, Conservation Editor for Western Hunting Journal, Conservation Editor for Game & Fish, and contributor to Wild Sheep, Pheasants Forever Journal, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s Bugle Magazine, Ducks Unlimited, Petersen’s Hunting, Montana Outdoors, Guidefitter Journal, Gun Dog, Backcountry Hunter, Big Sky Journal, and more.

Andrew recently left a writer’s event in Montana where he and his peers tested over 70 optics products and he talks about all the categories including budget, versatile, LPVO, precision and electro-optics. He shares his personal story of how a Missouri farm boy becomes a “grubby” newspaper man and eventually combines his love of hunting and words with his career path.

Derrick and Andrew talk about the allure of sheep hunting and Andrew tells his story of traveling to India with the late Jim Corbett’s .275 Rigby rifle that was discovered in a closet at Oxford University. Full of wisdom and cheer, Andrew was a wonderful guest and a head full of knowledge — Derrick claims this podcast as one of his favorite interviews thus far.

Derrick Ratliff interviews the hosts of the highest paying predator hunting contest in the country (over $3,000,000 to date!) that attracts over 700 teams per contest. Occurring three times per year in January, February, and March, the 23 hour contest attracts hunters from all over Texas. Jeremy Harrison and Todd Schwartz share interesting details regarding stats on the weights of winning cats to how they prevent cheaters from cheating to craziest things they’ve ever experienced while hunting. They discuss how the onboarding of technology has transformed their ability to run the contest well, interesting hunting equipment tech advancements, and how a professional fur trader vets the winning cats to prevent creative methods of cheating. Texas Music singer/songwriter, Aaron Watson, joins Derrick Ratliff in the studio for an interesting and inspiring music and hunting-focused conversation. Aaron talks about grit and perseverance and how, even after recording over 1,000 songs, he’s just as motivated and hungry in his career as he’s ever been. They talk about his music influences and how almost every song he’s ever written has been created or at least tweaked in the deer blind. And he shares why he talks about Jesus at his concerts. An outdoorsman at heart and a small town West Texas boy, Aaron says he always somehow finds time to fit in hunting. He may even share some of his personal opinions on Taylor Swift and a creative and humorous solution to the Jason Aldean/Jason Isbell dispute.
