Once More WIth Feeling

The Watchers gathered for Passion – where Angelus lets his creep flag fly high and free. Angel is a busy man, interfering with Dru and Spike, sneaking into Buffy’s bedroom, sneaking into Willow’s bedroom, sneaking into… well, you get the idea. We talk about whether or not Jenny even needed to be a Roma, Anthony Stewart Head’s fantastic acting as grief-stricken Giles barely holding on to Ripper, and whether that voice-over affectation works. Also, OMG THAT PUPPY WAS SO CUTE!

The Watchers Gathered for Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.

Cordi breaks up with Xander on Valentines Day, which prompts Xander to do something so stupid, Giles can’t stand to look at him. In addition to discussing what Xander managed to do right along the way, the Watchers have a conversation about break-up etiquette.

The Watchers gathered for Phases. There’s a lot more going on here than a werewolf story. Its age is showing a little bit in Larry’s storyline – it was treated as a joke, but was still a hugely significant moment. We also discover where you can buy iron manacles online, discuss the hazards of tiny backpacks, LARP, and cute girl backpacks v practical backpacks. Also, bunny facts.

The Watchers gathered for Innocence: the introduction of Angelus, the outing of Jenny, Angelus’s brutal verbal destruction of Buffy, his introduction to his ‘family’ of Dru and Spike, Dru’s rockin fashion sense, a serious lack of prophetic wordplay, and Oz giving us all feels.

Innocence is one of the most important episodes to the lore and overall arc of season 2, and even the series and the Angel spinoff.

The Watchers gathered for Surprise, the 13th episode of the second season. Buffy’s 17th birthday goes about as well as Buffy’s birthday ever goes. We discuss the choices for Jenny’s character, how awesome Dru and Spike are together. Buffy and Angel are nearly killed, barely escape, and then… Surprise.

The Watchers gathered for Bad Eggs.

Sunnydale students are given eggs and told to treat them like babies. Turns out, they are babies. Baby bezoars (not the medical kind, “pre-pre-historic” parasites).

Buffy has to battle the Gorch brothers, her controlled friends and watchers, and deal with being grounded.

The Watchers gathered for Ted, a truly outstanding episode.

John Ritter is the creepiest bad guy ever, in no small part because of how he almost always plays a fun, goofy, good guy.

There is some discussion of domestic violence, child abuse, and women being believed when they report violence.

Also boundaries in your own home, particularly when a child is involved (just don’t walk into someone else’s bedroom, you guys).

PSA from the Watchers: Don’t fall in love with your heroes.

NOTE: This episode was recorded before the allegations of infidelity against Joss Whedon by his ex-wife.  Once More With Feeling is a podcast about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is not about Joss Whedon. We are discussing his work, not his personal character.

And with that out of the way…. Your Watchers gathered for the two parter, What’s my Line. We’re introduced to Kendra the Vampire Slayer, Xander and Cordi kiss for the first (and second) time, Willow and Oz get together, Dru is healed, and an entire generation of kinksters discover their kink during one memorable scene between Dru and Angel.

We weren’t drunk, just super tired, y’all.

Watchers Adrean and Jack gather for the unaired original pilot of Buffy. This has never been officially realeased and according to Whedon never will be “while there is strength in these bones” because it “sucks on ass.”

Nonetheless, the Watchers seemed to enjoy it.

Watcher Donna couldn't be there for this recording session, so the other Watchers decided to do the 1992 movie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer staring Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland, Paul Rubens, Rutger Hauer, and Luke Perry (had Donna been there, there would have been significanlty more gushing over Rutger Hauer).
