  • 92. Share Joy With Others
Every day is a chance to cheer others on and share joy.
Throughout a day, you interact with many people. You have a choice in how you make those seemingly trivial encounters a bit more meaningful. It can be as simple as saying “hello” and “thank you” or engaging in a brief conversation.
This episode shares the importance of sharing joy with others in little ways and how research supports that your own happiness increases when you connect with and give to others.
Your One Bold Move: Share joy with others. You might just find more joy yourself.

  • 91. Step Into the Spotlight
Growing up, I loved being on any stage.
Then something happened when I got into the working world. I learned the spotlight that highlighted what I did well also became a magnet for other people’s opinions and envy. I heard the whispers behind my back and there were comments to my face. Over time, I minimized my own strengths in order to make others more comfortable. I didn’t even realize I was doing this.
This episode is the reminder you need to continue being your best self and that you belong where you are.
Your One Bold Move: Stand proudly in the spotlight, whatever that looks like for you. The world needs you.

  • 90. Hi, My Name is Shanna
    My name is Shanna.
But I’ve been called every name in the book: Shana, Shayna, Shannon, Shanana (that’s a really good story for another day). I’ve been told my name isn’t spelled right, it doesn’t look right, and that I should really change it to make it easier for other people.
Pronouncing names correctly is an important aspect of respect, collegiality, and leadership.
Someone’s name is their identity. How you honor their name is how you honor them as a person.
This is especially important in creating psychological safety and space where someone can come as their full self. It matters a lot as we consider how to develop more inclusive, diverse work environments.
This episode provides tips on how to clarify name pronunciations, apologize when you make a mistake, and address others when they say your name incorrectly.
Your One Bold Move: Make the effort to pronounce names correctly. When people mispronounce your name, thoughtfully and firmly correct them. To be yourself boldly, you have to be able to be yourself—and your name is who you are.

  • 89. Peer to Supervisor
Have you made the transition from peer to supervisor or are you hoping to get promoted within your organization?
As you advance in your career, at some point you’ll likely manage people who were formerly your peers. They may have even been your friends.
I lived this: In my first big management role, I went—overnight—from being the friend you had margaritas with to being the boss who did your performance review.
I knew that it would be a difficult transition. I could not have anticipated it would be one of the biggest professional challenges I experienced.
This episode shares what I wish someone had told me and how you can be intentional with your immediate next steps in order to be successful with this transition.
Your One Bold Move: Thoughtfully prepare for how to make your transition as a new manager, especially if you were previously their peer. What made you a great colleague was caring about the people you worked with, and now this is your chance to bring that compassion, empathy, and support to your team in a new way.

  • 88. Supporting a Friend Through Grief
As much as I value having words for all difficult situations, there are some where no words feel right. In moments of tragedy, death, or dying, you cannot take away pain and suffering, but you do have the ability to make things just a bit easier or lighter.
I often talk about the power you have to positively affect others and this is one of them.
Perhaps you have a friend right now going through something tragic and you’re unsure how to support her. The difficult part is that we will all experience this at some point.
It’s natural to worry you’re going to do the wrong thing or say the wrong thing. I still worry about this. The grace of being prepared for these moments is a bold move.
This episode provides six tips to support a friend who’s grieving.
Your One Bold Move: Support a friend who’s grieving by being present. Though this won’t take the pain away, it means more than you may realize.

  • 87. Magic Wand
What would you do if you had a magic wand?
I often joke about having a magic wand. I’m not sure where this came from. Whatever it is, I like the idea of carrying around magic.
Here’s the thing: There is no magic wand, but there is magic within you.
Your One Bold Move: Be the magic. Use your voice, share your ideas, and make the impossible happen.

  • 86. How to Do Performance Reviews—Remotely
Performance reviews have a difficult reputation. With the right framework and preparation, though, it’s an ideal time to reflect on an employee’s progress and develop plans for their future growth.
This episode provides tips on how to create a positive and meaningful review discussion, even while working remotely.
Your One Bold Move: Prepare for the review conversation and create a dialogue about performance, growth, and learning. Remember that performance reviews are an investment in your team members, because you care about them and their growth.

  • 85. Get Better at Achieving Your Goals
In Episode 26 we talk about the importance of setting goals for yourself. Hopefully by now you’ve set some goals. Today we’re going to talk about how to get better at achieving them.
Here’s a question for you: Are you willing to make tradeoffs to achieve your goals? Are you willing to sacrifice something in your life right now to make this goal happen?
As James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, says, “It’s not about choosing the rewards you want to enjoy, but also the costs you’re willing to pay.”
He also talks about the importance of having systems to achieve your goals. The goal gives you direction, the system is how you make forward progress. So, if you want to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself, you’ll need to build the system to make this possible.
This episode provides tips on how to create the systems that will help you with your goals.
Your One Bold Move: Don’t just set your goals. Create your structure to succeed at your goals.

  • 84. 5 Ways to Value Your Employees
When was the last time someone shared genuine appreciation with you at work?
A manager’s role is to create a positive, productive environment that serves and supports team members. It doesn’t require extraordinary effort or expense to achieve this goal and the results are worth it, especially right now when we’re all working with limited connection to the office or each other.
This episode shares five (relatively easy and inexpensive) ways to make your employees feel valued at work. You're going to want to bookmark this for later!
Your One Bold Move: Meaningfully recognize a team member or colleague today. Show genuine appreciation for their individual contributions or the collective effort. Proactively set aside time to make this a daily/weekly/monthly commitment.

  • 83. Face Your Fears
    What are you afraid of?
People fear generally the same things in their careers: failure, not been good enough, being wrong, and upsetting people.
I’ve feared all of these at different points in my career. I got caught up in other people’s expectations, my own worries, and what I thought I should do.
You can’t advance yourself and your career unless you’re willing to face your fears. Note I’m not saying to overcome your fear. You have to learn how to do the things while you feel afraid, to not allow the fear to overwhelm you. This is where you level up.
This episode provides three tips to work through your fears.
Your One Bold Move: Stop letting your fears drive your choices. You’re the driver of your career and your life.
