  • 229. Create Better Boundaries at Work
And just like that, schedules are back-to-back with more meetings, emails, and deadlines. You may have also added back in a commute. All of this may make you feel more out of control at work. Without pausing to reflect on where you are and what you value, it would be easy to get caught up in the churn and keep moving forward each day. But you deserve better than working at everyone else’s whim, which means it’s time to review and reset your boundaries.
This episode provides insights on how to create better boundaries in three fairly universal areas at work to preserve your energy, which will set you up for success at work and home. (Can you guess the three areas?!)

  • 228. Let Go of Being Right All the Time
Have you been in a conversation with a friend or colleague who feels the need to be right about everything? Conversations can feel like an argument. They may not even realize they’re doing it. Or...this may have been you doing it.
We’ve created a world where being wrong is to be avoided at all costs--but that's not the "right" answer either.
This episodes provides five ways to let go of being right all the time, including understanding why you might feel this way, why the little things become the big things in personal relationships, how to honor others' opinions and admit when you're wrong, as well as how to be a better listener.
Your One Bold Move: Let go of being right all the time, so you can truly be your best self personally and professionally--and bring this out in others, too.

  • 227. Staying Visible When WFH
Research shows that while working from home makes you more productive, it won’t necessarily help you advance your career. It's especially challenging for people working in a hybrid workplace where some may be back in the office and others aren’t, or if the days you’re there don’t line up with the senior leaders of the organization. Now consider that more women, especially working mothers, want to work remotely.
If "out of sight, out of mind" is true, then it will be on you to make sure you’re visible even while you work from home.
In this week's episode, I’ve got 4 ways for you to do this—and extra motivation for why it matters.

  • 226. Focus on What's Most Important at Work (How to Handle Competing Priorities)
One of the most frequently asked questions I get is: How do you prioritize your time when you have so many competing priorities? Over time, I've learned to develop strategies and systems to help me achieve my most important goals as a leader, employee, and working mom.
This episode shares my tips on how I focus on my best and highest use of time at work and ways you can begin implementing this strategy.
I’m going to add a visual of my priorities quadrant to my Instagram feed (https://www.instagram.com/shannaahocking) so you can use this for yourself.
Your One Bold Move: Focus on what’s most important at work, including what’s not urgent. This is where your growth happens.

  • 225. Let's Talk About Mental Health at Work
Did you ever wish you could be an Olympian? I did (though I didn't do anything to actually get my closer to that childhood dream!).
I have been following with interest Simone Biles' return to the Olympics--and her subsequent decision to prioritize her health, wellbeing, and safety over competing in the all around.
This moment has given us a pivotal opportunity to reflect on mental health, particularly at work.
This episode shares things to keep in mind when considering how to talk about mental health at work, and why it matters--particularly for women who have been taught you have to compromise yourself to meet others' expectations. Also included is what to say when asking for a mental health day, how to approach a recurring therapy appointment, or learning more about mental health resources provided by your employer.
For people leaders, you should give thought to how you’ll proactively address and reactively handle these conversations.
One more word: If you ever need help and you’re not sure where to turn, know you’re not alone. Call 1800273TALK 24 hours a day/7 days a week to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Your Bold Move: Go for gold in prioritizing your mental health and yourself.

  • REPLAY - Envision Your Happy Place
While we're away on bleisure (business + leisure--definitely one of the benefits of remote work!) at one of our favorite places in the world, I wanted to support you with a replay episode on the importance of envisioning your happy place.
If you're at your desk, this will be a welcome respite.
If you're in your happy place now, take note of all the details, so you can file them away for when you'll need it.

  • REPLAY - What I Would Share With Other Dual Career Couples
This week, Matt and I will celebrate our 18-year wedding anniversary. We've navigated a lot as a dual career couple. According to Pew Research, in about half of two parent couples, both spouses work full-time. In that same study, 56% of couples said that balancing two careers is hard.
When we were starting our lives together, people weren't as open about all the wonderful things and the challenges of being in a dual career couple.
Whether you're in this stage of your life now or considering it for the future, this is what I would share with other dual career couples and what I wish had been shared with us.
Your One Bold Move: Have open conversations with your partner about your expectations, your
values, and what is important to you in your lives together.

  • 224. How to Let Things Go and Move Forward
It can be hard to let go of something--whether relationships, missed goals, projects, or unkept promises. By not letting go, though, you're unintentionally holding yourself back.
This episode shares four ways to let go, so you can move forward.
Your One Bold Move: It’s not possible to avoid disappointment. It’s in learning to work through this and letting things go that you can emerge stronger.

  • 223. How to Refocus When You're Feeling Overwhelmed or Lost
One of the most frequently asked questions I get is: How do you stay so positive? Y’all, I’m not positive 100% of the time. I have hard days. Hard weeks. I had one last week. I felt a bit lost and completely overwhelmed more than once.
I have learned over time how to maximize my ability to bring my best self to what’s important to me, and that's what I want to help you do, too.
This episode shares the five things I did last week with the hopes it can help you bounce back, too.
Your One Bold Move: When you feel overwhelmed or lost, everything is a lot. Keep making forward progress. What is the ONE best next step you can make right now?
