  • Migraines & Improving Self-Talk to Reach Your Goals #1025

A headache and a migraine are two extremely different things. Those that suffer from migraines regularly can't even go about their day-to-day lives normally. Shawn Wells joins us today to talk about what a migraine is and why you may be having them. He also offers advice on how to get rid of them or at least ease the pain. Here are some shocking statistics:

    * Migraine is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world.
    * Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone with migraine.
    * Amazingly, 12% of the population – including children – suffers.
    * 18% of American women, 6% of men, and 10% of children experience them.
    * Migraine is most common between the ages of 18 and 44.
    * It tends to run in families. About 90% of sufferers have a family history of migraine.
    * Most people don’t realize how serious and incapacitating it can be.
    * Migraine is the 6th most disabling illness in the world.
    * Every 10 seconds, someone in the U.S. goes to the ER complaining of head pain, and approximately 1.2 million visits are for acute migraine attacks.
    * While most sufferers experience attacks once or twice a month, more than 4 million people have chronic daily migraine, with at least 15 days per month.
    * More than 90% of sufferers are unable to work or function normally during their migraine.

This just shows that a lot of people are suffering without relief. Shawn tells us in this episode diet changes, like a ketogenic diet, have been shown to give relief up to 90 percent. He also talks about supplements and other things that will hopefully help if you or someone you know is suffering. Shawn Wells is a long-time expert guest of One Life Radio. Learn more about Shawn here.

Mo Brossette also is in studio and we just love this guy. He talks with us about how self-talk can either harm you or help you when it comes to reaching your goals. Self-talk is extremely powerful because you are essentially telling your brain how to work that day. If you wake up in the morning and say "today is going to be terrible," then most likely you're not going to have the best day. This can change with positive self-talk. When you wake up and take the day head on it can get you one step closer to reaching your goals.

  • Child and Teen Suicide Risk, Why Therapy May Not Work #1024

So many parents have these thoughts: "That would never happen to MY child," "I would be able to tell before it got that bad," "My child would definitely talk to me about what's going on." These are thoughts that parents have that get them into trouble when it comes to knowing the mental status of their kids. Dr. Mark Goulston is a suicide prevention specialist. He is also the co-creator of the documentary “Stay Alive: An Intimate Conversation about Suicide Prevention.” Today we talk about how important it is to listen to others. Listening, and really listening, can reveal quite a bit about what someone is really feeling.

We also talk with Dr. Goulston about the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" narrative that too often parents and children participate in. When we put off our children, they will in turn put the parents off. Children and teens can feel like a burden, and the last thing they want to do is burden their parents even more. Dr. Mark Goulston offers his documentary "Stay Alive" here.

Kip Watson joins us to talk about therapy. We are continuing a conversation from a few weeks ago. Kip is a licensed professional counselor and knows the ins and outs of therapy. Sometimes it can be the person receiving the therapy, or it can even be the therapist themselves. Kip answers some questions to help you understand how to get the best therapy possible and know reasons why it may not be working.

  • Dr. Markman “Bring Your Brain to Work” & Improving Balance #1023

Finding "the right" job can often feel like finding Mr. Right. It's almost impossible. You have expectations and desires, which isn't wrong, but a lot of times the job doesn't live up to it. That's why Dr. Art Markman wrote this book. It dives way deeper than just finding the right job, it goes into how to take your morals and values to work and find true meaning while at work. Everyone has to work....that's inevitable. And, if you want to be successful while also enjoying your work, you have to understand some of the cognitive science explained in Dr. Markman's book. Today we focus on how leadership can impact the entire team, and how you can't judge a job in the first month. Believe it or not, sometimes loving what you do is a process that takes time. That's why you bring your brain to work! We will have him back on soon to continue this topic.

Our favorite trainer, Daniel Tague, talks about improving your balance today. This may seem like not a huge deal, but your balance affects all day-to-day activities. If you injure a muscle, joint, tendon, etc. it could easily throw you off kilter. And when you get off balance, this will compromise every other movement. Long-term, this could be very bad. Today Daniel tell us some exercises to do (you can do them at home) to help improve your balance.

  • Del Bigtree Vaccines Pt 2, Texan’s for Vaccine Choice Update #1022

Today we are finishing the two part series of an interview with VAXXED producer, Del Bigtree. In this second half, Bernadette and Del talk about how things have changed in the past 50 years. Why is the measles so scary right now? We talk about an episode of The Brady Bunch where Peter comes home with the measles and it's no big deal. They are happy to have it and get it out of the way! What nonsense, right!? No. It's not nonsense at all. Everyone fears the measles because that's how the media has directed us. There is so much work to be done and education to be had. You can go to Del Bigtree's nonprofit website to learn more.

Out girl, Jackie Schlegel, join us today. She is the founder of the group Texans for Vaccine Choice and the reason we were able to speak with Del in the first place. Jackie put together the rally in Austin that Bernadette and Del were featured speakers. Jackie has a daughter who was vaccine injured at 4 months old. She now needs lifelong care to help with

  • Del Bigtree – Vaccines & Meditation Monday #1021

Today we play part 1 of the Del Bigtree interview. Del Bigtree was an Emmy award-winning producer on the daytime talk show, The Doctors, for six years. He also has a background as a filmmaker and investigative medical journalist. Del is the producer of the film VAXXED and host of the talk show the High Wire. Bernadette spoke with Del at the state Capitol in Austin at a vaccine choice rally.

This interview is not intended to be anti-vaccine, but more to inform you of the mistruths that the pharmaceutical industry is capable of. Our freedoms are being taken away when it comes to vaccine's. Think about it this way, vaccines are a medical procedure. Just like any other medical procedure there are risks and there is always consent. We should still be able to make informed decisions for ourselves and our children before they receive a medical procedure, don't you think? Tomorrow we will be playing part 2 of this amazing interview.

Autumn Connolly joins us via telephone from Arizona. She ends the episode with a little bit of mental discipline knowledge and meditation. Monday's are hard, but you can get through them and calm that monkey mind with a little bit of self-reflection and meditation. Autumn shares with us a chant in Sanskrit that can be used for mental self-control, to block animosity, and to overcome financial pressure. Here are the words:

  • Carbs, Carbs, Carbs! Virtual Reality to Build Social Skills #1020

Low carb diets are everywhere, but are they healthy? Your body actually needs carbohydrates, and there are various different types of carbs to choose from. Cassie Bjork joins us to talk about which carbs are good go to's and which ones you should eat minimally. The key to eating carbs, Cassie says is pairing them with a fat. When you do this, it will help slow the process of the carb getting turned into glucose. Eating carbs alone is why you experience almost a sugar rush and then a crash. Cassie says to always eat your P's, F's, and C's which are your proteins, fats, and carbs. And there are so many different types of carbs that affect your body differently. For example, eating potatoes compared to eating watermelon. These both have such different properties and Cassie tells you how they are different and when to eat them.

We are so excited to have Maria Johnson from the Brain Performance Institute joining us. She specializes in helping kids with social development. The latest research uses Virtual Reality technology to help kids learn how to deal with basic social situations. She tells us why kids are struggling to build these skills and how virtual reality is being used. If you have a child you think may benefit from this type of training, you can reach out to the Brain Performance Institute for a FREE consultation.

  • Psychological Trauma & Is Procrastination an Emotional Problem? #1019

Trauma comes in all sizes, shapes and forms. A psychological trauma could stem from something (big or small) react differently from certain triggers. Jaime-Lee Fraser joins us today to tell her personal testimony of a bombing attack she survived at the age of 22. Jaime-Lee is a business growth expert and a master in Neuro-Linguistic Programming. She tells us the story of the bomb attack that she was involved in and how she dealt with the trauma that followed. Then we talk about what other types of scenarios can create psychological trauma. We will all experience hardships in our lifetimes, and if you are dealing with a trauma you should listen to this episode to hear some ways to move forward and cope.

Von Eaglin talks today all about procrastination. We all are guilty of procrastination, and today we are debunking why people do this. Procrastination can cause more anxiety and stress than the actual task at hand would. So why do we do this to ourselves? Apparently, our emotions have a lot to do with this. When we think about all the things we have to do it creates stress. And then we manifest that into thinking the thing or list of things is going to be terrible to do. It's in our brains that we set ourselves up for procrastination. Toward the end of this episode we accept calls for our segment Bern on with Von.

  • How Moods Are Contagious & How to Stay Healthy While Traveling #1017

Being around someone who is in an extremely happy and jolly mood will usually lift you up too, right? Well the same goes for a bad mood. Moods are contagious in that they are energy you are projecting onto the people around you. Dr. John Huber is a clinical forensic psychologist, so he knows a lot about our brains and the way we think and act. Today he talks about how bad moods can be contagious and how you can avoid catching a bad mood. Really, it all comes down to not taking things personally because someone else's bad mood has nothing to do with you (usually). Then we dive into some other ways that we pick up and learn from moods and the way we see parents use their emotions.

DeWone Bennett joins us to talk about keeping your mental health in check during the summer and while traveling. He gives us specific things we should do when traveling that may ease the stresses of travel. • Detecting Lying, Managing Stress and Limiting Beliefs #1016

In the movies and books, lying seems to be something you can point out by facial expressions and body language cues. But, Linda Nguyen tells us that's not the case. Linda is a PhD student at UT Dallas and a research assistant at the Center for BrainHealth. She studies how people think and interact with one another. Today she talks with us about implicit bias and detecting if someone is lying to you. We are all liars, statistics show that most people lie every day. The reason we lie...that's a bigger questions and a whole different topic. But how we lie and get away with it apparently comes down to how well you know the person who is lying to you. Lies are most detectable through verbal cues, not body language. Linda talks all about this in today's episode.

Mo Brossette joins us again and we just love his energy and message. Mo is an expert on human behavior, mindset, movement and nutrition and today we talk about managing stress. He gives us his 5 steps (one of them is to get your a** kicked by the way) and then he talks about limiting beliefs. Setting goals that are high and achievable can sometimes be difficult. That's why some people set low standard goals. You have to know that you are capable of anything you set your mind to, you just have to have the right mindset and motivation. This is such an empowering and motivational segment, be sure to listen!
