  • Esther: The Hidden Workings of God - A God of Providence - Jeremy Little

Sometimes when we look at the state of the world around us, it can be difficult to see where God is at work. How should we respond, as followers of Jesus, when God appears to be silent and absent? This week, Jeremy Little kicked off our new sermon series, Esther: The Hidden Work of God. We can take great encouragement from the story of Esther, a story in which God’s name is not directly mentioned, but God’s work is evident. God moves through quiet providence in our lives. His unseen hand is active and making everything work together for our good and His glory.

  • Vision 2024 - Brian Barr

This week we looked back over 2023 and celebrated all that God has done at OneLife. We have seen people added, lives changed, financial generosity, strengthening through partnering churches and the faithful provision of God at every step. OneLife is a story of God’s grace and intentional calling to the Bay Area of Houston. But if we are going to continue to be people who make a difference in this world, we cannot grow callous to Jesus or his church. God’s intention is for the church to display His wisdom, the beauty of the Gospel, to the world around us! Jesus is alive today and is actively building His Church. Is the church as important to you as it is to Jesus? Our endeavor is that OneLife would be a healthy church, full of whole-hearted disciples of Jesus who are making a difference in the Bay Area of Houston and the world.

  • Disciple: What it Means to Practice Spiritual Disciplines - Brian Barr

We grow in meaningful connection with God through consistently and intentionally engaging in spiritual disciplines. God gives us practices through which we can experience God as our Father. 1 Timothy 4:7 says to “train yourself to be godly.”  We will not automatically have a close relationship with God because we say “yes” to Jesus. If we are to truly experience God as Father, it will require effort, training and sacrifice on our part. We must introduce healthy habits into our lives that cultivate space for us to engage in spiritual disciplines and eliminate habits that are not helping us to meaningfully commune with God. As we keep showing up and seeking God, He is faithful to meet with us and we experience a deep connection with Him.

For resources on how to engage in spiritual disciplines, check out the Spiritual Practices page on our website at https://www.onelifehouston.com/practices

  • Disciple: What it Means to Experience God as Father - Brian Barr

Everything in life changes when we experience God as Father. For the Christian, this is our reality through Jesus! This new identity - as a son or daughter of God - is the most significant truth about us. The temptation is for us to find our identity in the things we do or the things that have happened to us. But it's through our relationship with God our Father that we find our worth, true identity and the love we so desperately long for. Our Father isn't disappointed in us. He will not abandon or reject us. We have been adopted. The Holy Spirit removes our shame and guilt and brings us value, belonging and purpose. He pours the love of the Father into our hearts. Being a disciple of Jesus means growing in intimacy with our Father in heaven.

  • Disciple: What it Means to Follow Jesus - Brian Barr

What is your aim in 2024? As Christians, we are called to be disciples of Jesus - our aim is already set for us! Discipleship is apprenticeship - the highest form of intentional training. Being a disciple requires us to invest in our relationship with Jesus - spending time with Him, hearing His voice, and doing life with Him. But many Christians today struggle to experience a meaningful life with Jesus. Many think having a relationship with Jesus is about living “for” God, when it’s actually about living “with” God! The God of the universe wants to know us - that’s an invitation we can’t be casual about. We can’t let distractions and the cares of life get in the way of this one thing. With the start of a new year, let’s set our eyes on what matters most - knowing God and doing all of life with Him.

  • Prayers for '24

With the closing of 2023 and the beginning of a new year, what should we be expecting God to do in us and among us at OneLife? This week, we heard from several of our Elders and their prayers for us at OneLife in 2024. May we be people who grow in our love of God, hear His voice, and desire to live whole-heartedly for Him this year!

One of the ways we grow as followers of Jesus is through daily Bible reading. This week, we are kicking off our church-wide Bible Reading Plan! Whether you are a devoted reader or brand new to reading the Bible, this plan is for you! There are various levels of the plan to choose from, so pick the one that is the best fit for you. • Immanuel - God with Us - Brian Barr

Today we celebrate the birth of Jesus! God’s promise to His people was that He would not leave them alone in darkness, but would send Jesus, the Immanuel, “God with us.” This is the miracle of Christmas! Are you living your life on a firm foundation, marked by God with you? Or are you living a life based on trust in your own abilities and wisdom? Jesus is available to you, today. His followers experience His presence with them. We do not have to live life alone, without anyone in our corner. God is near to those who put their trust in Him. Will you trust in Him today?

  • Anticipating Christ - Our Future Hope - Chris Nagel

Are we aiming to make our lives count for this world that is passing away? Or are we living to make our lives count for the coming King and His eternal Kingdom? This week, Chris Nagel pointed our hearts towards the incredible day to come when Jesus returns to usher in His kingdom. As adults, we have learned to temper our excitement due to past unmet expectations. But for those who follow Jesus, we have a future hope that will not disappoint. Our King is coming! And we have been entrusted with the work of hurrying along His return. We are to be all the more diligent to ready the Earth and the people around us for His coming.

  • Anticipating Christ - Two Kingdoms in Conflict - Brian Barr

As followers of Jesus, we live at war between the kingdom of this present age, led by our enemy Satan, and the Kingdom of God. So how should we orient ourselves to live in this moment in time? This week, Brian Barr continued our Advent series, “Anticipating Christ”. As Christians we have been transferred from the kingdom of this age into the Kingdom of God; so by default we have been inserted into this war. We live paradoxical lives where we experience the sorrow and devastation of this world, but also experience the growth of God’s kingdom as it breaks into our everyday life. So how should we live in light of this? Peter tells us to “live holy and godly lives as we look forward to the day of God.” God wants us to be active participants in this war. We have been set apart from the evil of this world to display the beauty of King Jesus to a broken and lost word.

  • Anticipating Christ - The Day of the Lord - Brian Barr

The Christmas Season is here! This week, Brian Barr kicked off our Christmas series entitled “Anticipating Christ.” The Christmas holiday is all about celebrating the coming of Jesus. But when Jesus came, He taught (to everyone’s surprise) that He would come twice. In His first coming, He was slain like a lamb for our sins; in His second coming He will fully deal with evil like a lion. Christmas isn’t just about celebrating Jesus coming as a baby, but also about anticipating His mighty return as savior and judge of the whole world. It can be easy to get caught up in the sentimentality of the Christmas season (which isn’t bad in itself), but anyone who has experienced suffering knows that sentimentality isn’t enough for a hurting soul. The promise of Christ’s return is! When we learn to root ourselves in the reality that Jesus will put all things right, we can face any temporary suffering with unshakable hope.

    2 Peter 3:1-14
