  • Podcast #282 – Connectors and Setting High Goals for Team Ordinary!

What an incredible week for the Ordinary Marathoners Facebook Discussion Group! I have often tried to be the kind of person author Malcolm Gladwell calls, “a connector.” There’s just something that is self-satisfying about being able to connect people together in a meaningful way. I also rely greatly on help from others, allowing the group to grow organically. If I can’t be a great “connector” myself, the next best thing is to know a few of them. I whole-heartedly thank all who have helped grow this community – not only this past week, but over the last few years of our existence.

As we look ahead to the launch of Team Ordinary (any day now!), we are starting to set goals for the project. Goals worthy of an Ordinary Marathoner. If this works out, I better alert the t-shirt printer… they’re going to have a lot of work to do.

  • Podcast #281 – How Much Does Your Surroundings and Support System Influence Your Choices?

Congratulations to Team Ordinary members Ron Boos, Katy Mayo and Nick Deault on finishing their races this past weekend!

Had a great conversation with Dan Demore yesterday that got me thinking about a lot of things we can do on the podcast and in the group. It’s refreshing to talk to people who take interest in the things you do and try to help out.

When I reflect on the past, sometimes I wonder how much I’m in control of my own choices and how much derived from adapting to my surroundings. How important is it for you to have support in your personal endeavors? How important is it to surround yourself with people who are interested in similar things and who understand your goals? If you do not have that support system or productive environment, can a coach help? Just a few things I’m thinking about on this Tuesday morning.

  • Podcast #280 – Eating Hills for Breakfast and Taking Advantage of Your Long Run

This morning started a bit differently for us. We sent the kids off for the day, passed on our morning eggs and coffee, and decided to have some hills for breakfast instead. Heading down to Forest Park, we found the five or six largest hills… and then ran up them.

Sounds like a really dumb way to start the day, but it turned out to be a great workout, hopefully launching us into a great weekend. Of course, weekends in late summer typically mean marathon-training long runs! These are no longer the “roll-out-of-bed, throw your sneakers on and go” runs that perhaps you encountered in early weeks of training. These are multiple hours-long runs that will eat up half your day. But you need them to be ready for race day, and in order to make the most of these few opportunities, you should treat it as close to race day as possible. Just a little advice for long-winded, soapbox preaching, Coach Scott. Enjoy your weekends!

  • Podcast #279 – Sarah Gallegos, The Shrinking Taco

Sarah Gallegos’ doctors told her it was time to lose about 40 lbs. So she did a little better. She lost 120! Along the way, she started running. At first, it was just to that lightpost over there. And then maybe two lightposts. Before she knew it she was running 5k’s, and 10k’s and half-marathons!

She started The Shrinking Taco – which is both her nickname and a facebook page where people can track her journey. Most recently, this journey now includes finishing her first full marathon!!! (And in the pouring rain, no less.) She’s got a fantastic sense of humor and many more goals to accomplish in the future, including the Honolulu Marathon and possibly a 50k ultra!

  • Podcast #278 – Team Ordinary, NFL Drama, Martinus’ Video and Brittany Runs a Marathon

What an incredible weekend of racing by Team Ordinary runners and friends of the podcast! A recap of some really exciting milestones and achievements in half-marathons, marathons, and even an Ironman 70.3. It sure is a lot more fun to cheer for people we know than it is for, say, oh I don’t know… ANTONIO BROWN!?!?

A nice video report the NY Post did about former podcast guest Martinus Evans of 300 Pounds and Running. It’s too bad some idiots can’t help but make dumb comments on YouTube.

Stef and I went out this weekend and saw Brittany Runs a Marathon. Probably won’t win many Academy Awards, but worth seeing if you’re a runner. Especially if you ran or ever want to run the NYC Marathon. I try not to spoil it on the podcast… mostly…

  • Podcast #277 – Self-Sabotaging My Podcast, Re-creating my Routine

I’m having a lot of trouble maintaining my self-prescribed podcast schedule lately. It’s not for lack of trying, but a combination of factors that include not having a proper routine in place. Even when the routine offers me time to podcast, I’ve been sabotaging myself by producing content that hasn’t reached my standard of quality. Basically I record a podcast, hate it, and delete it.

What is the prescription for overcoming this? Rediscovering my routine. Since Ironman, I just haven’t settled into a schedule that fits all of the things that I want, expect, and need to do. That’s what I intend to do over the next few weeks.

Team Ordinary wishes good luck to T’Sean Laws running his first half-marathon this weekend, and Sarah Miller running her first marathon. Also, Angela Fillmore tackling the Maritime Half-Marathon! Good luck to everyone racing!

  • Podcast #276 – Ordinary Marathoner – Team Ordinary Update, IMLP 70.3 and the Coach’s High

So excited to announce that Team Ordinary will be officially launching later this week! Hats and shirts are in and they look great! We should be getting the rest of the gear early this week and then we can officially launch. You can check out the team webpage here, though it’s admittedly not complete.

Aside from the Team Bios, the Race Schedule is already proving useful! Two of our athletes are on the 70.3 Half Ironman course in Lake Placid this week. We look forward to keeping up with all the Team Ordinary Athletes racing exploits on our page.

I also got to experience my first coach’s high as some of my athletes are absolutely crushing it. (Hint: one of them is my wife). We’re looking forward to seeing many of you at the Marine Corps Marathon wearing your Team Ordinary shirts!

All these Ironman finisher podcasts have performing so well! Amazing stories from amazing people – Charlie Duffy, Grace Lindell, Danielle Rosvally and the latest, Matt Schorer.

The launch of Team Ordinary is right around the corner! I’m getting really excited about it and we’ve begun building out the page with some of your bios and race schedules. We’re looking forward to this next chapter in the Ordinary Marathoner community!

Also… we’re doing Philly Marathon next year. And T’Sean Laws is doing it, too. (He doesn’t know it, yet.)

  • Podcast #274 – Matt Schorer, Follow the Fat Guy to Ironman Kona

Matt Schorer looked at the scale one day and saw a number he didn’t like. It was over 350 pounds. Living a mostly sedentary life driving a truck, finding time to workout was challenging. But something needed to be done about this.

So Matt answered a local ad for a weight loss program and bravely took the first step by going to the gym. It stuck. Matt started knocking off pounds and adding incredible goals to his future. In particular, he wants to one day race in Ironman Kona! He started a facebook page called Follow The Fat Guy to Ironman Kona and got to work.

There are generally two ways to get to Kona. The first is to qualify. While not disqualifying that possibility in the future, Matt is aware that is a lofty goal. The second way is through the Ironman Legacy Program. Finishers of 12 Ironman races can apply for a lottery to race in Kona. This past July, Matt finished his very first Ironman triathlon in Lake Placid (just a few minutes ahead of me). We wish him the best of luck as he continues his quest.
