Own It SLC episodes

  • E117 Jason Ruzicka

To people or not to people? We talk with Jason Ruzicka about the irony between being of service and feeling claustrophobic in social gatherings.  This podcast goes all over the place and ranges from the price of waxing bodily orifices to the meaning behind Jason's head tattoo which reads "Fuck Love."  There is also an appearance by the neighborhood ice cream man.

  • E116 Human Behavior

It’s a Bjork song, and it’s what we’re talking about on this episode.  How much of social interaction, is acting?

  • E115 LabeledFest

Recorded outside of LabeledFest, this episode is a few snippets recorded in Harvey the Bus. We talked with Shawn McMillan, Charlie, and Grey Thomas about politics (which is weird for us), mental illness and how to medicate that. We talk about what it means to be a recovered slam poet with Grey. We find that this episode captures a good cross section of LabeldFest put on by Brian Higgins, a pretty cool event with lots of neat films and shit and stuff.

  • E113 A Taboo Journey

Sarah is reading a book called How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and How to Listen So Kids Will Talk. Somehow this leads Sarah and Phil to talk about the recent trend of micro-dosing and Ayahuasca because Phil's intuition has been telling him to check that stuff out. In an unexpected turn the conversation became quite revealing. Phil talks about feeling blocked and how scary it can be to trust your intuition when it's directing you to something that is taboo in your culture. This episode was recorded via zoom. PLease forgive the background noises of Sarah's house. This one is worth listening until the end

  • E111 Rebel with a Cause: Jefferson (Airplane) Richard Savio

He's listened to all but 7 episodes of the Own It SLC podcast, and now it's his turn to be in the hot seat...that he built.  Jefferson is Phil's roommate and construction expert for Harvey the bus.  We talk about hedonism and the value of doing whatever you want, the dark and the light of it.  This guy did whatever his heart wanted to the destruction of himself, and has come out the other side to where it is quiet and he has nothing to prove.  He reads an excerpt from his personal writing, and admits it may be the only experience he's had with adrenaline in a very long time.

  • E109 Rebels With a Cause: Sequan & Shane

Sequan performed at one of our first Own It shows in 2019. In a piece where she redefined the acronym HIV she also claimed a voice which has only grown louder. Now she runs a non-profit called “Hope on Tapp” where she offers free HIV and Hep-C testing to underserved populations. This episode is packed with information about these misunderstood diseases. The woman is a powerhouse, and her partner Shane knows it. “This is part of our date night,” he told us when they sat down in Harvey.  How cool that they wanted to record a podcast with us for their date!

  • E108 Rebel With A Cause: Cary Judd

Cary Judd and his buddies made a film called 828. They lived in a van and went all the way around Iceland, following Cary as he rode his e-skateboard into grief and came out the other side.  We talked with him about the first screening of his film at LabeledFest, a festival of art to end stigmas related to mental illness. He talks with us about the unflattering scenes of himself and what it’s like to really show yourself to an audience. We also talk about flow state, suicide, rock climbing, falling and letting your art evolve you.
