Can one ever get out from under the weight of their past criminal record? Justin Hughes proves to be a man of influence wherever he goes, and tells a tale of prison politics. He shares about the hardships of paying down his court fines and how they continue to accrue interest and also psychological weight from crimes committed over a decade ago. Justin and Phil find a real kinship with each other. Although they've known each other for years, they know each other better now.

We’ve been articulating this notion of “beyond the beginning.” How does one find out who they are beyond a drunk, beyond a news anchor, beyond a junkie? We talked with Randall Carlisle and Rachel Santizo to discuss this question and the result was more revealing than any of us expected. We were honored to have these two inside of Harvey the bus. This lil old short bus seems to be a place which encourages the evolution of truth, where people feel free to really talk.

Let's talk about food, and sex. Natalie is the creator of a group where people get honest about their relationship to food. Ironically, this leads to us talking about sex, and appetites. New to Salt Lake City, Natalie has only been in Utah for a year and she is already starting shit by talking candidly about these two topics which can be a problem for people in recovery. Phil shares his experience writing a song called "Porn Monster" where he divulges the unsexiness of porn addiction. Look for it on Spotify under "Mr. Denton."

In a rare voice, Mary Jo shared a piece of her writing with us about broken sand dollars and the grief she carries.m We were honored to get the rare glimpse into what makes Mary Jo tick

He went from sitting on the couch as a client at Journey to being hired as the director 10 years later. Such growth does not happen without pushing the edge of what's possible. This guy is quite a story teller. He tells us about being wickedly burned by sulphur at Kennecott, and the realizations he had in the aftermath. What would you do if you received a $700,000 settlement? Tyler learned that money cannot bring you what you want, and after burning through so much cash, he was free to take risks.

Recorded inside of Harvey the bus, as promised. This episode is the first in the "Shit Starter Series" where we drive around with 4 mics and 2 velvet couches talking to people who are starting shit in a good way. Konrad from our former home The Beehive talks with us about the parallels between straightedge and recovery. Both sober, and yet quite different in a few ways. We discuss clarity of mind and the power which comes with making a lifestyle choice. With some drug saturated stories told by DJ Josh, it was cool to see two seemingly different dudes sit on the same couch and learn from one another.
