Pillar 6 is exercise. I know, I know....everybody says you should need to exercise to be healthy. But why? What are the exact benefits? My view of exercise changed when I changed my view of the actual benefit. "I am training to be 90." This is my motto. Exercise has nothing to do with weight loss in my opinion. The moment you separate exercise and weight loss you will see the benefit.
Pillar 7 is fasting. It is such a simple word to say but the actual science behind this technique is larger than the word. We all fast at baseline (most of us do not eat when we are asleep). How can I use this to my benefit?
Everybody has that computer that pops up with a "system update" every once in awhile. The one that you click and your computer has to reboot and your work is pretty much ruined for 30 minutes. If you are like me, you ignore that reminder to "restart your computer." A few months later you notice that it no longer is working properly and its gained 20 lbs (or at least it is running like it gained 20 lbs). This is pretty much what happens when we do not sleep well. We do not give our body that time to "install an updated version." All of this happens when we sleep!
Fatty liver disease (also known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is raising at an alarming issue. It is starting to affect our children and currently is the #1 cause of liver failure in America. It is ALL about your diet. This is a disease that should not be an issue and some simple conversations and education could make a huge impact.
Dr. Bo and Dr. Bleu continue to march through the 10 Pillars of Health. Pillar 4 is all about gut health. We are not talking about ways to maintain the perfect beer gut but how do we make sure the lining of our intestines is working like it should. This has been a rapidly progressing and developing topic over the last 10 years as we understand more about how our intestinal lining (gut) interacts with the rest of our body. There is tremendous interaction between the immune system and the hormonal cascade that controls our health (and our weight).
Dr. Bleu, Dr. Bo, and Chelsey Nelson (RD) discuss why they believe people should stop using bariatric surgery as a last resort. We want to move past the stigma given to weight loss surgery and focus on taking control of our health now versus spending the next 10 years struggling.
Bo Neichoy and Chelsey Nelson, RD discuss expectations for hair loss after weight loss surgery. We go into the four reasons why people lose hair as well as strategies for hair loss prevention.
This a common plan that we run across in the post-weight loss surgery period. You have hit a wall and you do not know where to go.... There are thousands of post on Facebook and other sources that try to coach you through the "pouch reset" in hopes that it will get you stuck off of high center. Is this the best thing to do? Dr. Bo and Chelsey try to explain the reasoning behind the pouch reset and why this may not be a good idea.
Dr. Bleu and Dr. Bo start to lay out what they consider to be the 10 Pillars of Health. This episode contains the first 3! We will continue this journey in the next few episodes.
Dr. Bo and Chelsey discuss the problems associated with cardio workouts and how they fit it to a weight loss effort.
We previously did an episode on 10 foods that cause more damage than their packaging suggest. Chelsey Nelson, our dietician, reviews 10 more foods that are viewed as healthy options but leave us short in actual results!
