Marillion never got the memo that by 1983 you weren't supposed to do progressive rock the way Genesis, Yes, Camel and others did in the 1970s. Despite their debut coming during the New Wave era of MTV, Marillion established a style and sound that have sustained them for over 40 years even if it wasn't in vogue at the time. The knock on them in the US is that they sounded too much like Peter Gabriel era Genesis and the lyrics & vocals of lead singer Fish definitely resemble those of the 2 time Rock n Roll Hall of Famer. But the sound of Marillion is rich, in depth, dense and melodic with some brilliant musicianship.
Steve Rothery is an incredible guitarist who share the mid-range space very well with the equally brilliant Mark Kelly on keyboards. Pete Trewavas holds it all down with his bass and Mick Pointer keeps the beat on the drums to crank out some prog greatness. Most every song is around the 8 minute mark so you have to listen up to hear everything that's going on. Fish delivers poignant lyrics in songs about drug addiction (He Knows You Know) and war (Forgotten Sons) while taking a jab at the aristocracy (Garden Party) and having a bit of fun in the videos.
To help us better understand these UK artist is another UK artist, Jimmy Maddon. Jimmy combines straight ahead rock with prog and glam sensibilities and he's starting to make some headway here in the US. We asked him to help us uncover what makes Marillion so great, what makes their music English and why they haven't found the same kind of success in the US. On the 40th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1981 rock album "Don't Say No" by solo artist, Billy Squier.
The album went all the way up to #5 on Billboard's album charts. It produced 3 Top 45 hits and the album went triple platinum and remained on the charts for two years. It was the early days of MTV and Don't Say No was made for it. Squier's song were all over MTV back then.
This was Billy Squier's 2nd studio album. His band was highlighted by the hard hitting drummer, Bobby Chouinard, lead guitarist Cary Sharaf, Alan St. Jon on keyboards and Mark Clarke on bass. Billy provided the amazing vocals and rhythm guitar. The album was produced by Reinhold Mack & Billy Squier.
As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 38 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew.
This was Tom's pick so naturally he picked a great album by a local Boston legend, Billy Squier
So if you're my kinda lover and you know what I like, make sure you stroke me in the dark, c'mon don't say no!

What do yoga, the Y2K freakout, Finland, and Bob Dylan have in common? Cheryl J. Fish, that’s what. Cheryl brings them all together in her debut novel from Livingston Press, ‘Off the Yoga Mat’, set in that crazy year 1999, when everybody feared a looming mass technological meltdown and started filling their garages with buy-in-bulk toilet paper and miscellaneous canned goods (sounds familiar, doesn’t it?). Cheryl is here to talk about her novel.
Later, my go-to Bob Dylan guru pal, Lucas Hare, co-host of the fabulous podcast Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan, drops by to talk about what Bob Dylan’s career looked like in the late 1990s/very early 2000s—the period during which Cheryl’s novel is set. FYI: Dylan was a whole lot more active than you probably remember or might imagine, so stick around to hear Lucas and me geek out over that phase of Dylan’s multi-faceted career.

Sam Zniber knew he wanted to be on the radio. So at the tender age of 14, he stepped into the office of his local top 40 radio station and let the Manager know exactly what he was doing wrong. To the Manager's credit, he listened to this brash kid and offered him an airshift. And so began Sam's radio journey, and what a journey it's been! Sam has programmed radio stations from Sydney, Australia to Miami, Florida to Paris, France. Currently heard on Radio Nostalgie, he also runs MusicDatak, his own music research company. Today Sam steps into the What Difference Does It Make virtual studio to discuss his career, and to offer his opinion on the music played back in 1986 from the World-Famous KROQ in Los Angeles.

We're back with all the latest happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire!
Tragically, one person died and several were injured at a recent Morbid Angel show outside of Chicago. We discuss this sad situation and are sending good vibes to the people affected.
Chris recently ventured to the theater to see the Neil Bogart biopic 'Spinning Gold.' Did it accurately portray Neil and the Casablanca Records story? Was it a mess of factual inaccuracies? Above all else, was it worth a watch? Chris gives his full review of the movie.
Sebastian Bach recently pranked Skid Row fans by claiming a deluxe edition of 'Subhuman Race' was being released. Did this work as an April Fool's day gag? We give our thoughts.
Other stories covered this week include Vinnie Vincent bringing Marq Torien on board for his next event in Nashville, Vivian Campbell professing his love for Phil Lynott, Udo Dirkschneider claiming his current band is more authentic than ACCEPT, and more.
We also touch on the recent Ace Frehley and KISS drama (this was recorded before his recent followup interview).
We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of April 7th, 2023 and SHARE with a friend!

May Pang joins My Rock Moment for a candid interview ahead of the premiere of her documentary, THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY, in theaters April 13th.
THE LOST WEEKEND: A LOVE STORY, is May Pang’s story, which is aptly described as “a weekend that lasted 18 months and a love story that took 50 years to tell.”
During their relationship, Lennon reunited with his son Julian and enjoyed his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles—with the albums "Mind Games”, "Walls and Bridges" which included his only #1 Hit Single "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Rock and Roll”, and collaboration with Rock legends Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Mick Jagger, and Ringo, among others. Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self, as a naïve 22-year-old experiencing her first unforgettable love.
In this episode, May discusses the making of the film and recounts her time as a young woman trying to navigate the trappings of fame, rockstars behaving badly and the marriage that Lennon left behind
