Biopics about contemporary musicians have been a very common thing in cinema, particularly over the last 40 to 50 years. As we've often discussed on the show, they often follow a familiar pattern – a grocery list, if you will, with all the known high and low points of the subject's life story the audience expects. However, before there was a glutton of such movies, there were a few that had no rules to follow so relied more on character study than cherry picking from 40 years of history.
Welcome to episode 103 of See Hear Podcast.
Kerry has made her first film selection for the show. It's the 1980 film about country singer Loretta Lynn, Coal Miner's Daughter. During the 1960s and 1970s era when it wasn't the done thing, Lynn wrote her own songs. When it wasn't the done thing, her songs were about being a strong woman who took no nonsense. Of course, life is never as simple as that. She also had to contend with her husband “Doolittle” Lynn who was part supporter / part tormentor. The film charts their relationship as well as her friendship with Patsy Cline, her family in a tiny town in Kentucky, and life as a highly loved singer. Yes, all these are talking points for most biopics, but this one tends to look more at Lynn's state of mind and her growth from shy youth to someone with self belief.
Our beloved Tim Merrill is back for his first show in nearly a year. The See Hear crew is a trio again. Tune in as we talk about our origins with country music, thoughts on the film, a scene I believe should have been in the film (my own shopping list check box, if you will), and Tim's suggestion on how Stephen King would have ended the film.

1973 was one helluva year! Behind the good, the bad AND the ugly of the world, there was music, an incredible motherlode of creativity exploding from all genres, changing our musical culture. Markus and Ray hop in the Imbalanced Time Machine to help paint the picture of their experiences that year.
That includes a deep dive into the rabbit hole as they run down the full list of albums released in '73. The music frames the whole episode, and will evoke some strong memories!
This is a recurring exercise, and given the impact of 1971 and 1972, can you expect '73 to be any less a part of your life experience?
Sooooo, buckle in for a fun adventure, especially if you remember...

Iron Maiden are one of the biggest bands in the world, touring the planet in their own customized 747 flown by lead singer Bruce Dickinson. But in 1983, Maiden were still forging their way, trying to solidify their lineup and making their name through relentless touring. After the success of Number of the Beast, the band wanted to take things to the next level and with the addition of Nicko McBrain on drums they finally had their classic lineup set which is still intact today.
Thanks to Nicko on the skins, the confidence and power of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, the sci-fi lyrics and extraordinary bass of leader Steve Harris and the frantic guitar licks of Dave Murray & Adrian Smith, Iron Maiden had the lineup that would set them on a course for global superstardom. Piece of Mind would be the first of 5 legendary albums from this lineup in the 1980s and the 5 of them would reunite in 2000 (along with 3rd guitarist Janick Gers) to reclaim their thrones as the ultimate heavy metal band. They're still going today and The Wolf & Action Jackson will be catching their Future Past Tour in Europe this summer.
From Nicko's incredible drum work on Where Eagles Dare to Bruce's haunting vocals on Revelations to the ultimate Maiden runner with The Trooper, this album showcases the talent of all in the band. For once, they actually received airplay on US radio and The Trooper charted (unlike the 1st single The Flight of Icarus). Despite no love from MTV, the album went platinum in the US and the fans turned out in droves for their 130+ date tour. We go track by track, think about it in comparison to the other Iron Maiden albums we've reviewed over the years (#14 Live After Death, #38 Somewhere in Time, #39 Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, #65 Number of the Beast, #66 Fear of the Dark, plus #48 review of Bruce Dickinson speaking tour) and discuss how this was the real beginning of the band we love.

Max Tolkoff has an opinion or two on the state of Alternative radio. This is the man responsible for The Edge format which eventually wound up on over 30 Alternative radio stations by the mid 90’s. Max tells tales on how his love of skiing, biking, and bad gambling decisions led to his career in the 80’s as the Program Director for 91X in San Diego, followed by stints at WFNX in Boston, and Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles. After all that, we analyze a ten song chunk of music played on KROQ in 1986.

In lieu of a regular episode this week, I’m coming at you from the Rock is Lit Vault. I’m excited about interviewing Rex Weiner, author of ‘The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane’, tomorrow night (3/24/2023) for an upcoming episode of Rock is Lit. Make sure you subscribe to Rock is Lit so you won’t miss that episode.
Since half of Rex’s Ford Fairlane stories take place during the early ‘80s punk rock scene in LA, I thought it would be fun to revisit my chat with Pleasant Gehman about that period. This outtake from my interview with Pleasant is from Episode 4 of Rock is Lit, which features Janet Fitch’s novel ‘Paint It Black’, set during that time and place.
Listen to EP4 of Rock is Lit here.
Pleasant Gehman is a writer, musician, and host of The Devil's Music podcast, also on the Pantheon Podcast Network.
Stay tuned for the next full episode of Rock is Lit, which will drop next week.

In episode no. 148 of the Rock's Backpages podcast, we welcome music-industry legend Rob Dickins and ask him to tell us about his "pop life" in the 27 years he worked with Prince, Madonna and other Warner Brothers superstars.
Rob takes us back to his music-infused youth when his dad Percy worked for Melody Maker and New Musical Express and his brother Barry managed the High Numbers/Who. We hear about his days booking bands as a Social Sec at Loughborough University, and then about his start at Warner Publishing in 1971. Tremendous yarns about Madonna, Cher, Rod Stewart and others follow in rapid succession, along with the mind-boggling account of how Rob became global head of Warner Music… for 24 hours.
A new biography of Leon Russell gives us the perfect excuse to hear clips from Andy Gill's 1998 audio interview with "the master of space and time" — the first about 1970's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, the second about the writing of Russell's beloved 'Song For You'.
After we've said goodbye to former Miles sideman and Weather Reporter Wayne Shorter and to Jackson Browne's virtuoso sideman David Lindley, Mark talks us out with quotes from his favourite new library additions from the past fortnight.
Many thanks to special guest Rob Dickins.
Pieces discussed: Leon Russell audio interview, Wayne Shorter: The Sunny Weatherman, Wayne Shorter: After the Storm, Michelle Mercer on Wayne Shorter, Behind the Curtain: David Lindley, Lynyrd Skynyrd: The 100 Proof Blues, Kraftwerk's Ralf Hütter and Maureen Cleave in conversation with Jack Good.
