In episode no. 147 of the Rock's Backpages podcast, we welcome pioneering '60s rock writer Ellen Sander and invite her to discuss her classic 1973 book Trips: Rock Life in the Sixties, reissued in an "augmented" edition in 2019.
Ellen recalls her New York upbringing and initiation into the folk scene in Greenwich Village, then explains how Danny Fields (episode 28) steered her towards writing for Sing Out! and Hullabaloo. With references to David Crosby, David Geffen, Abbie Hoffman and the Monterey Pop festival, she talks about the inextricable relationship between '60s music and the decade's political upheavals. We also hear about her 1968 article on groupies; her troubling experiences on the road with Led Zeppelin; and her relationship with Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman (father of her son Marin), all of which led to the writing of Trips.
Attention then turns to two clips from the week's new audio interview, in which suave Yorkshire-born rock'n'soul man Robert Palmer talks about his love of bossa nova and the fun he had on the sessions for 1974's Sneakin' Sally through the Alley with Little Feat's Lowell George.
After Mark quotes from new library interviews with the Beatles (1963), B.B. King (1968), and Simpsons creator Matt Groening (1993), Barney cites an early Steely Dan piece from 1973 and Jasper recommends articles about emo stars Paramore (2010), Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor (2014) and – from 2016 – jazz hybridiser Jacob Collier.
Many thanks to special guest Ellen Sander. Trips: Rock Life in the Sixties is published by Dover and available now.
Pieces discussed: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Robert Palmer audio, Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Roxy in retrospect, Chuck Jackson, Chuck Jacksoner, Chuck Jacksonest, The Strokes, B.B. King, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Matt Groening, Steely Dan, Paramore, Trent Reznor and Jacob Collier.

In this episode, Rich and Clint ask the age old question that every generation asks...what's up with the music today? And was it better "back in the day?" With the help of Brian and Greg from The Sweet Remains, Josh Panda and Jeff Symonds, the guys take an earnest look at whether it's possible to answer that question objectively. If you can make a case for the fact that music WAS better, how and why would that be?

There was a time where Australian bands felt that the only way they were going to get noticed was to leave the country and head to London. Sometimes, this would translate to great popularity ...and sometimes, it meant bands would live under difficult financial circumstances while their music was not in danger of bothering the top 40.
Welcome to episode 163 of Love That Album.
I'm joined by previous guest Doug (aka Fnord) Buissuant and first timer, Darrin Irvine to talk about The Go Betweens and their 1988 album 16 Lovers Lane. Of course, we talk about the journey the band took from their origins in Brisbane through to living in London, and finally relocating to Sydney before calling it a day (well...sorta). The music evolved from clever indie pop in the early 80s to lush, beautifully arranged pop in the late 80s. We talk about how we saw the music evolve, being a Brisbane band under the police state of Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the friendship of Grant Mclennan and Robert Forster (and what that supposedly made the rest of the band feel)....and unlike some other discussions about the Go Betweens, we DON'T talk about Fleetwood Mac. 16 Lovers Lane can be divisive among fans â some prefer the earlier albums that were more angular sounding, and others love the beauty of their final album in their original incarnation. Where do we stand? Tune in.
I am hugely grateful to the gents for taking the time to bring me their expertise and conversation about one of Australia's great bands that deserved more recognition from the wider public than they received. Also, thanks go to my friend, Pat Monaghan for the loan of his box set G Is For Go Betweens and for his conversations with me about the band (and about a ton of other music).

Released seven years after Aerosmith and Run DMC brought rap and rock together on Walk This Way, the soundtrack to the 1993 film Judgment Night was a groundbreaking moment in the crossover between the two music genres. Every song on the album was a collaboration between an artist from each genre and it featured some of the biggest names in music at the time.
Helmet, Faith No More, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam and Slayer worked with Ice-T, House of Pain, Cypress Hill, Onyx, and De La Soul. 30 years later, it’s a seminal moment in music history that showed us what the fusion of these two genres could do.
In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at the Judgment Night soundtrack. The story behind the concept. How the artists worked together. How one guy in the story is the inspiration for Happy Gilmore. Plus, Cyndi Lauper fans make a strong case for her induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Kate Bush fans are coming for us with their pitchforks and torches for saying we don’t like her music.
Our show is sponsored by Boldfoot Socks and McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. We're also proud members of the Pantheon Podcast Network.
