Hello, Lit listeners. If you were one of those high school kids who spent hours holed up in your bedroom spinning your favorite albums on your turntable at ear-bleeding volume until your mama hollered at you to turn off that racket and take out the trash, and dreaming of blowing your one-horse town to become a rock star, this is the episode for you.
Peter McDade is here to talk about his novel ‘The Weight of Sound’, about aspiring rock musician Spider Webb, who at 18 announces to his parents that he will skip high school graduation and move to Athens, Georgia, to launch his career in the birthplace of R.E.M. and the B-52s. Through rotating points of view and covering a span of over twenty years, the book traces the ways Spider and his music affect the people in his life: family, fellow musicians, girlfriends, fans, roadies, and music industry lackeys.
As drummer for the rock band Uncle Green, Peter McDade spent fifteen years traveling the highways of America in a series of Ford vans. While the band searched for fame and a safe place to eat before a gig, he began writing short stories and novels. Uncle Green went into semi-retirement after four labels, seven records, and one name change; Peter went to Georgia State University and majored in History and English, eventually earning an MA in History. His first novel, ‘The Weight of Sound’, was published by Wampus Multimedia in 2017 and won the Georgia Author of the Year Award for best debut. ‘Songs By Honeybird’, also published by Wampus Multimedia, was released in 2022. Both books have soundtracks of original songs.
Given Peter’s cred as both writer and musician, he’s doing double duty as both author and music guru in this episode.

This week we begin a mega two part series as we look at The Best & Worst of Metallica! In this episode, we're joined by fellow podcaster Metal Mike Tyler from That Metal Station & The Plug podcast. This time, we're focusing on the formative years of the bay area legends.
Metallica broke onto the scene in 1983 with the release of 'Kill Em All.' The melding of punk and NWOBHM influences created a bombastic new sound that would create the genre of thrash metal. The band wouldn't slow down; releasing 'Ride the Lightning' in 1984. In 1986, the band would unleash 'Master of Puppets' on a ravenous fan base.
While riding high on the momentum of their first three albums, Metallica would encounter tragedy on the road as bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus crash in Sweden. The band would quickly regroup and recruit former Flotsam and Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. Metallica would work out the kinks on 1987's 'The 5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited' before launching a full scale assault on the ears with 1988's '...And Justice for All.' The release of the 'One' single and music video would elevate the band into the public eye.
In 1991, the ascendancy would be complete with the release of 'Metallica,' better known simply as The Black Album. The simplified direction didn't exactly please die-hard fans but certainly earned the band superstar status.
In this episode, the guys will discuss their history of becoming Metallica fans, reminisce on their experiences as fans, and each pick what they deem the best and worst song from each album of this era.
What are YOUR picks for the best and worst songs from each album? Let us know in the comments below!
We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Metallica Part 1 (1983-1991) and SHARE with a friend!

In this episode we welcome writer, curator and consultant Paul Gorman and ask him about his new book Totally Wired: The Rise and Fall of the Music Press.
In a loose and free-ranging conversation, our guest reflects on various eras and aspects of all that Rock's Backpages is about, from the launch of Melody Maker almost 100 years ago to the online ecosystem of Instagram and Tik Tok in the present day.
Along the way we cover everything from Crawdaddy! to Smash Hits via marginalised women writers and feuds between musicians and journalists. (Listen out for the unsettling sound of Nick Cave describing his new "hate" song 'Scum' to interviewer Mat Snow.) We also hear clips from Frank Broughton's 1998 audio interview with Time Out's late founder Tony Elliott.
By way of paying tribute to the late Christine McVie, there are further audio clips in the episode, this time from John Pidgeon's 1977 interview with Fleetwood Mac, plus we bid a sad farewell to Stax Records co-founder Jim Stewart.
Mark selects his highlights from recent additions to the RBP library, quoting from pieces about Marianne Faithfull, Ravi Shankar, Alexis Kornerand the mighty Pat Benatar, after which Jasper concludes matters with remarks on articles about Odd Future and the brilliant Billie Eilish.
Many thanks to special guest Paul Gorman; Totally Wired is published by Thames & Hudson and available now from all good bookshops. Visit Paul's website at paulgormanis.com and follow him on Instagram at _paul_gorman_.
Pieces discussed: US indie mags, The Decline and Fall of the UK Music Press, From NME to Smash Hits, How to be a Rock Critic, Rock Critics Rule..., Tony Elliott audio, Fleetwood Mac audio, Stax Records, That Memphis Sound, The 1973 Rock Writers Convention, Marianne Faithfull, Alexis Korner, Ravi Shankar, Pat Benatar, Odd Future and Billie Eilish.

What's doin’, Wo? It’s the 100th episode of THE STORY SONG PODCAST, that’s what’s doin’! Join your hosts as they return to Candletop for an all new discussion about the first song they ever reviewed, and maybe the greatest story song of all time. In this special episode, we’ll revisit and re-review the song that started it all, the #1 hit from 1972, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” by TV legend (and former Miss Fireball), Vicki Lawrence. In this episode, we talk about the beginning of a podcast and the ending of Andy. We’ll ask the questions that have been haunting us since the beginning: Do hungry, hungry judges ever go to the dinner buffet at Webb’s? When did Little Sister become Mama? Is there anything Vicki Lawrence CAN’T do? So, make (small) tracks to this episode to the 100th episode of THE STORY SONG PODCAST. You’ve got to get to it.

So much has changed since David Uosikkinen & Kenny Aaronson were guests on the podcast, separately back in 2019!
Their musical friendship has grown, even during the pandemic. We talk about each of their own activities (The Hooters for David, and The Yardbirds for Kenny), and, no spoilers, but Ken uncorks a fun surprise, amidst his stories.
We get an update on In The Pocket, Dave's Philly-centric collective, with the latest news on that project. Plus, they both discuss their involvement in the Lest We Forget recorded tribute organization, and their part in honoring Charlie Watts!
But the episode starts with, and centers around, the recent passing of Robert Gordon, and what he meant to both of them. If you're a fan, it can help serve as a bit of grieving. Just remember, they knew him well...
So, get set for a fun, high-paced listen with 4 friends "in the quad!"
