Hair metal ruled the radio and the backs of denim jackets in the 1980s. A cornerstone of every hair metal band’s music output was a power ballad – this was a chance for the bad guys in rock and roll to show their softer side by slowing things down and singing about the women they love. These were the songs you put on a mixtape for the girl who sat in front of you in history class or requested on the radio on a Saturday night.
On tonight’s episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a look at our 10 favorite monster power ballads of all time. And we’ve got a pencil standing by in case the tape gets stuck in the player. Time to hold those lighters high!

The Stray Cats reawakened the love of Rockabilly in so many people who were "too young" to know the music in its first iteration! Their drummer, "Slim Jim" Phantom joins The Imbalanced Brothers this week for a chat about the music, his podcast ("Rockabilly Confidential available via his web site, Apple, Spotify and wherever you get podcasts), AND his role as "your honest mechanic" on satellite via Little Steven's Underground Garage (Sundays, 8pm on Sirius/XM Ch. 21)!
Our mutual love of Eddie Cochran sparks the chat, and away we go!!! Talking about Lemmy (and their project, Head Cat), Carl (Perkins), "Georgie" (Harrison), Bob Dylan's advice, and so much more fun in this week's episode!

Andrew Farriss was the main songwriter in INXS. Michael Hutchence added the flair and the lyrics but without Andrew there really wouldn't have been the INXS that we know.
INXS sold more than 50 million records around the world. They had number 1 albums and number 1 singles across the globe too. They won the biggest of awards and played the biggest of venues. And all whilst keeping the band line-up the same throughout their 20 years with Michael Hutchence.
In this interview we talk about Andrew's new music and then dive into the success of INXS where he talks about his friendship and writing role with Michael, the pressure to follow up their first real hit in America, all the stories around the incredible album 'Kick' – which the label didn’t understand when they first heard it – right through to working with the legend that is Ray Charles.

Welcome to 2 Tone Legacy a special 10-part audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the stories behind the songs that contribute to the enduring legacy of 2 Tone music and its ongoing impact on popular culture. In each episode, I'll be joined by Paul Williams, author of "You're Wondering Now: The Specials from Conception to Reunion" and lead singer of UK 2-Tone band The Skapones. Paul is a noted 2 Tone expert and he'll be sharing his memories and insights on all the songs covered in this series.
If you've never heard it, "Madam Medusa" by UB40 is a protest song of the highest caliber that perfectly captures the impact Margaret Thatcher was having on Britain. It is as much a document of its time and place as "Catch a Fire" by Bob Marley and The Wailers is of early 1970s Kingston. And the song -- with lyrics written by noted British folk artist Ian Campbell and father to band members Robin and Ali Campbell -- was the main reason the band was under surveillance by MI5 in England for years.
Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George and appears on Pantheon Podcasts. Ska Boom is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon.

In an extraordinary career that spans over 40 years, American-born Scott Walker has been both the most famous pop singer in the UK and one of its most enigmatic and reclusive artists. His fans include David Bowie, Brian Eno, Sting, Johnny Marr, Radiohead and many more.
30th Century Man celebrates the Walker’s artistic journey and the amazing voice of one of the most uncompromising and respected figures in music today and presents a rare look inside the most bizarre recoding session ever captured on film. 30th Century Man is a visually & structurally inventive film that subverts the typical rock-doc narrative to deliver not just the journey of a songwriter but a meditation on the creative process itself.
