Even by the lofty standards of the late '60s, The Chambers Brothers were visionaries, blending rock, gospel and psychedelia into a musical bouillabaisse seasoned with social awareness. Lester is the third of the four Brothers, who were joined by a white drummer named Brian Keenan.
The Chambers family is from Mississippi, but they formed their band in Los Angeles after the oldest brother, George, was discharged from the Army and settled there. "He went to California because he no longer wanted his brothers and sisters to grow up in a place like Mississippi," Lester says. "We got in the car one night and drove up. And, after two-and-a-half to three days we wound up in California, but it was a struggle getting out of Mississippi on the road."
They started performing in 1961 and added Keenan in 1965, the year they earned great acclaim with a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where they went electric hours before Bob Dylan. Their first album, The Time Has Come, was released in 1967 and includes their masterpiece "Time Has Come Today," a song that still rings true five decades later. That album also includes "Uptown," a song you can see the band perform in the documentary Summer Of Soul.
We touch on all these topics in this conversation with Lester, who also talks about his latest venture, the band Moonalice.

If you’ve checked out this podcast more than once, you may have noticed that I like to listen to a lot of different styles of music. And I also like to discover styles that I’ve never heard before. That’s the case this week with my guest Mark Stewart. From the experimental sounds of The Pop Group to the dub sounds of The New Age Steppers and Mark Stewart & The Maffia, I went down a very deep rabbit hole. It was actually a little intimidating knowing that Mark has such a discography and I was not familiar with the majority of it. But as as soon as we connected, we were laughing our asses off.
We bond over Romanian Gypsy Music, swap Guns & Roses stories, and lament the loss of Mark Lanegan. At one point, Mark starts to interview me! He talks about forming The Pop Group and getting support slots for Pere Ubu and Patti Smith and then having to go back to school to finish exams. Mark also reveals the connection between The Pop Group and The Simpsons.
Mark’s latest album is a throwdown, of sorts; kind of a musical steel cage death match with collaborations featuring KK Null, Ye Gods, Lee Scratch Perry, & many more. Grab the album, follow Mark on Facebook and on Twitter @_markstewart. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on social media. Rate and review. Five stars would be nice. We survived the music industry's biggest two weekend event and it's time to re-evaluate our lives. Ryan made it back from the desert to talk to Anthony about his biggest Coachella takeaways, but Pedro it seems is still stuck in the festival parking lot. From the weekend's biggest surprises to the crowd management to the down-bill artists you may have missed, we've got the 411 for all of you who stayed home to keep your sanity intact.
After we've had our fill reminiscing on the past, it's time to look to the future as the dynamic duo interview Rod Wendt and Brie Deux of Tampa synthwave band Glove. The pair dive into their recently released debut LP Boom Nights, fluidity in writing music, and why 80s post punk should never have died. Stick around to get a taste of their single "Behavior" as well. Cheers, fam!

Multi faceted and uber-talented Abby Travis is a musician, singer, songwriter and actress, whose music career began in the 1986 as bassist for the SST band The Love Dolls and is still going strong. She’s played and sang with The Go-Go’s, Cher, The Eagles of Death Metal, The Bangles, Beck, Masters Of Reality, KMFDM, Elastica and many more. She’s released four solo albums, and is currently one half of the brutalist artcore duo Sumo Princess, with drummer Gene Trautman, who, like Abby has played with EODM, as well as Queens of The Stoneage and Mark Lanegan. Hostess Pleasant Gehman and Abby have been friends since the early 1980’s. In this episode, they discuss some of the many days and nights of debauchery they shared from the Hollywood punk scene in early 1980’s and onwards. Among other topics: anecdotes about Redd Kross, Russ Meyers and drag queen dive bars, insane stories from spending Elvis Week 1999 in Memphis with El Vez, The Mexican Elvis; drug-soaked nights on tour with The Butthole Surfers, and Abby’s performances with Spinal Tap... yes indeed, you read that correctly
