Longtime drummer turned guitarist, singer, & songwriter Matt North graces the podcast today. He’s got such an amazing story that starts with his uncle, the poet laureate Jesse Stuart. His influence on Matt’s life is unquantifiable. As was moving from his hometown as a child. But he found comfort and friendships playing the drums. It was such a help to him that he found himself playing as a professional drummer by the age of thirteen! But that’s just the beginning.
He moved to San Francisco for the music scene but stayed for the comedy. He began doing standup and roomed with Patton Oswalt and Mitch Hedberg. Their dedication to their craft lit a fire under Matt, but for his music, not his comedy. He wound up in LA playing drums, professionally and even doing some acting. But with the rising cost of living in LA, coupled with the discovery that his son had a learning disability and would require assistance, Matt and his family decided it was time to leave. He moved to Nashville where he ended up in a lawsuit about the quality of the special needs education his son was receiving. All of this helped to inspire his latest album, Bullies In The Backyard. There are songs influenced by his legal battles, the job he had to get at The Home Depot to help pay for that battle, and even his awesome mother-in-law. In our previous episode, we looked at the history of instrumental songs that topped the pop charts. For my money, there's never been a more unlikely hit instrumental than the synth-infused, riff-heavy stomper that is Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein". This episode, we break down this instrumental classic featuring Edgar Winter on keyboards, sax and drums.

Michelle Willis... is so startlingly talented. She's probably one of the best singers I've ever heard in my life.
~David Crosby
When asked how her 2012 self would react if told she would have David Crosby and Michael McDonald play on one of her albums one day, Michelle Willis would not have been surprised. That's not arrogance, it's self confidence, and Willis oozes with it. She is a performer who knows what she is capable of with her voice, her instrument (keyboard), and her writing.
Having spent the last few years with a front-row seat to Crosby's resurgence, playing on two of his most recent albums and touring with his band, we are now treated to Willis' new album Just One Voice out April 8, 2022.
On this episode of the Songfacts Podcast, Michelle talks about some of the songs on the new album, plays a bit of her amazing song "Janet," and gives us some insight on all things Crosby. Having had a chance to listen to this album top to bottom, I can tell you that it is a must listen.
