AndroidRSSGloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Diane Dreher, Ph.D., Professor of English and Associate Director of the Spirituality and Health Institute at Santa Clara University. Diane is a best-selling author and positive psychology coach whose latest book is Your Personal Renaissance: 12 Steps to Finding Your Life’s True Calling. Diane writes a regular blog for Psychology Today and offers personal coaching based on the latest research in positive psychology to help people create greater joy, meaning, and balance in their lives.
Did you ever buy a fancy toy for your child only to find him playing with the box the toy came in? I did. That happened often with my sons. Children are naturally creative, yet if glued to television or mesmerized by video games, they are not experiencing the type of personal agency they would if they actually created something. Screen technologies, though, don’t have to squeeze the creativity out of our kids. Research shows that with less screen time, children develop their creativity more fully—and then when they do use screen technologies, they use them for creative purposes. This is what we want for our children and teens—we want them to be in touch with their creativity—and to use it in all aspects of their lives—even with their digital devices.
Dr. Diane Dreher has researched creativity and creative people extensively. In her book, Your Personal Renaissance: 12 Steps to Finding Your Life’s True Calling Dr. Dreher summarizes the basic characteristics of the artists and writers of the Renaissance that were key to their immense creativity. In this interview she discusses three major qualities of creative people:
1. Creative people are intrinsically motivated—they do what they do because they love doing it. They don’t need external rewards for a fulfilling life. In fact, their fulfillment comes from within.
Join me to learn more about these “top three qualities” and how parents can nurture them in their children—Yes, even in our digital age.

AndroidRSSGloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with Douglas Gentile, Ph.D., Associate Professor at Iowa State University. Douglas Gentile is a developmental psychologist, an award-winning research scientist, educator, author, and one of the world’s leading experts on the effects of mass media on children, adolescents, and adults.
Did you know that the first 28 seconds of a 30 second commercial is used to set a very specific mood, to make us feel happy, relaxed, or maybe even jealous of those fabulous looking people we are watching? Advertisers knows how to engage our unconscious minds and our most primal feelings so that we are much more receptive to their messages. We are literally unconsciously driven to want their product from a deep feeling level. Rationality? Logic? Forget them. In fact, often the actual product being sold doesn’t appear until the last 5-10 seconds, as if an after thought.
Check out commercials with your kids sometime. While you watch, count the number of seconds until the product appears and then discuss what mood the images were aiming for. You can make the unconscious ploys more conscious for your kids. If you would like a free copy of Gloria’s 20 page resource guide: 100 Family Media Literacy Activities, just e-mail [email protected] with subject line: 100 Activities and you will receive engaging, fun activities like this for talking with kids of all ages about commercials and other content areas such as screen stereotypes and media violence.
In this podcast, Dr. Douglas Gentile discusses a few of the fascinating “psychological tricks” advertisers use, along with ways to arm our kids against their harmful effects. An engaging speaker as well as a respected scientist, Dr. Gentile has spent many years researching this topic. He has a wise and balanced approach to media issues and gives this cogent advice to parents: “Compared to factors such as environment, genetic predisposition and experience, the mass media is the most controllable risk factor when it comes to the formation of children’s negative behaviors and parents have the most power to decide on how best to keep this risk factor in check.” Amen to that!

AndroidRSSGloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute, talks with PCI Certified Parent Coach® Sheila Wenger about another type of “identity theft” in our digital age— our Parenting Identity. Sheila, the mother of twins, a boy and girl, currently age 7 and the owner of The Parent Partner is also a Lead Instructor with Parent Coach International.
Guess what universes and cells have in common? The very first thing they do as they emerge is to put a boundary around themselves—this boundary identifies them. In the embryo, for instance, certain cells become brain cells, others nerves, other livers, etc. etc. All the various cells know where they are going because they know who they are.
So if you know who you are as a parent in this digital world, you know where you are going. If you aren’t clear on your Parenting Identity it could result in more stress and countless frustrations. Why?
When we are strong in Our Parenting Identity we have clarified our values and what is most meaningful to us and passed that information to our children, directly in clear communication and indirectly through our choices for them.
Parenting in our digital world becomes that much easier when we protect and nurture our Parenting Identity. Tune in for ways to do just that!
Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

Part One: Gloria converses with Dr. Jane Healy, award winning author of several books including the international best seller, Your Child’s Growing Mind and her latest book, Different Learners: Identifying, Preventing, and Treating Your Child’s Learning Problems, about: Are I-Pads Really Good for Toddlers?

AndroidRSSWhat can happen to the brains of young children with too much exposure to screen technologies? The answer isn’t pretty. In this conversation, Dr. Jane Healy, who was twice named “Educator of the Year” by Delta Kappa Gamma shares important new brain research that supports with certainty the claim: Early exposure to screens puts youngsters at risk for all sorts of learning problems and disadvantages such as hyperactivity, aggression, and even can promote the onset of ADD. Early exposure also reduces a child’s ability to be empathetic to others. Dr. Jane Healy has decades of experience helping parents with media issues. Her book, Endangered Minds, is a classic in the field. Dr. Healy explains the negative effects of early exposure to screen technologies in clear terms, while offering parents many practical ideas for supporting optimal brain development.
Young brains are easily conditioned. This is the key concept Jane and Gloria would like parents of young children to understand and take to heart when listening to this podcast. There is never a more crucial time for brain development than in the first few years of life. This podcast reminds parents of young children of the fragility of the young brain. Gloria and Jane give parents solid, scientific reasons to limit screens as much as possible for young children, thereby proactively encouraging moms and dads to parent well in our digital world.
Part Two: Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI), and developer of The PCI Coaching Model, coaches Geri, a mother of three boys, ages 13, 11, and 9. All the boys have their favorite electronic gadget that is driving Geri crazy.
This is the first session of 12 sessions of PCI Parent Coaching for Geri. In this session, Gloria gets a clearer picture of all of Geri’s frustrations and challenges. You probably can relate! Gloria listens attentively to Geri’s concerns and discusses the overview of the coaching Geri will receive in the upcoming weeks. Gloria gives Geri a surprising “homework” assignment.
