As with giving, Jesus again speaks to the human need for recognition - reminding us that prayer is about transformation, not the hollow appearance of righteousness. God doesn't need eloquence, rather He calls for honest and worshipful communion with Him

Matthew 6:1-4. As we return to our Real Deal series, Ps Christian Kahnt looks at Jesus' statement on giving. Turning the page to chapter 6, Jesus speaks to the human need for recognition, even as we do something like giving to others. While we crave attention of others, the heart of ministry is service - to God first. We are not to live for the praise of others, but living for Him - who always sees when we give and serve.

Kate Dundas shares a timely word on rest. We live in a day and time that prioritises effort, work and productivity. These are good things that society grossly overemphasises, if not worships. We are made to also need rest and we should not feel guilt for this. While rest looks different from person to person, the best form of rest is Sabbath - giving time with God in His presence and in community.

Matthew 5:33-37. Ps Hilary Williams concludes this leg of our Real Deal series by considering Jesus' teaching on loving our enemies. Most see this counter-cultural teaching in terms of how we are to treat others. However, Jesus is not saying we are to put up with abuse, or that we have no right to stand up for ourselves. Ultimately we are to rise above law and culture, seek peace over vengeance, and to let our kindness provoke others to evaluate their own hearts.

Matthew 5:33-37. Anoj Joseph continues our Real Deal series by considering Jesus' teaching on oaths. While this may be odd to our ears, Jesus reminds the hearer that we are prone to putting different weights on different promises. Jesus wants us to treat all of our promises as something we intend to keep. Our word should be our bond - and the way we treat the words we speak reflects the heart within us.

Matthew 5:27-32. Ps Christian Kahnt continues our Real Deal series by looking at adultery and divorce. Contrary to how some misread this passage, Jesus is not condeming sexual desire. Adultery is often connected to idolatry, since we are placing things other than God first. Here, Jesus wants us guard our own hearts so that He remains first, and thus l that we would see intimacy in marriage as a very normal, healthy and giving expression as God intended.

Matthew 5:21-26. Andrew Mihaleff continues our Real Deal series by looking at Jesus' statement on murder and malice. Jesus wants to impress on us that all interpersonal sin begins in the heart. When conflict arises, rather than harbour a grudge or wish evil, we are to pursue reconciliation in all our relationships. In this way we are seeking to honour one another, and ultimately, God.

Jesus began on Christian character and is about to dive more into behaviour - but before that, we reach this pivotal moment. The law is not forgotten, but grace brings law into proper focus. We should note that here, Jesus tells us how we ought to read not just his sermon, but the Bible in its entirety.
