January 29, 2024 Episode 156: Jake, Part 2 | Stake Relief Society President tells her bi-sexual daughter's coming out story.
Welcome back to the second episode in my series for LDS (Mormon) parents of gay children. In part 1, Episode 155, Jake guided us through this first phase of his coming out journey as a 34 yo man to his parents a little over 4 months ago.

On today’s episode, we have an additional special guest, Sue Petersen, who was the Stake Relief Society president in the Elk Ridge Utah Stake for the past 5 years. Sue has a grown daughter who has been in a lesbian relationship for the past 7 years. She shares with us how she has navigated that path, the mistakes she made and the bridges she has built by following Christ's example.

For those not familiar with the LDS church, the Relief Society is the womens organization within the church. In Elk Ridge there are 12 wards or congregations and Sue was the leader over all those.

I want to say in the spirit of disclosure, we are still only getting Jake’s perspective at this stage. We don’t use his last name or call out who parents are out of respect for their privacy so please keep that in mind as you listen.

Welcome back to the program Parrish The Thought listeners.

Today's episode is the first in a short series I'm doing for LDS parents specifically and also applies to parents of all faiths.
My guest and new friend, Jake, is 34 and has recently come out to his LDS parents. Having an already strained relationship for the past 15 years has been hard enough so one can imagine how this news was received. Jake takes us step by agonizing step through the road trip home to tell his family he is gay. The reactions aren't what he was hoping for and he shares with me the dark places of his mind he's gone to prior to coming out and since. No one should ever have to feel suicide is an answer.
In all fairness to his parents, this is a surprise and shock to them. He's had a lifetime to process his orientation. It's new for them and only time will tell how the family dynamic will play out.
Parents. We can and must do better at loving our children, no matter their age. Especially Christian parents. Christ asks us to "love our neighbor." He didn't say only love thy neighbor if they look, think, act, live, like us and do as we say. Either we follow Christ, or we do not.

My guest today is Lacee Smith. She is currently running for one of the open seats on the Payson, Utah city council.

With local elections just a week or so away, we’re talking about why she is passionate about running and why it’s important for you to exercise your voting rights.

In the past, only a small percentage of eligible city voters turned out. People are losing faith in and disillusioned with the governmental process and fearful of a percieved “good ole boys” club mentality where decsions are made and money is spent without the approval of the citizens.

She wants to bring a whole new set of eyes to the city which will foster a more transparent relationship between the residents and their government.

Matthew Perry has left the building.
As one of the 'Friends,' Perry entertained the world and influenced culture through the 1990s in what was then the most popular sitcom TV had ever produced. Friends was huge, with many of my peers hosting weekly watching parties. We all loved it. Lynne and I still watch reruns as late as this week. Friends produced quotes and drama that were repeated and discussed at every company water cooler for the next week. Perry played Chandler Bing, a quick-witted Friend who offered the voice of reason to roomies Ross and Joey. He was my favorite on the show, and by the sound of it, probably yours, too. He did a handfull of other shows and a movie or two, but Friends will always be his legacy. He was terrific, and has left us far too soon. Drowning in a hot tub. 54.
