ST. ROSALIA l PATRON SAINT OF PALERMO

Feast Day: September 4

If you happen to go to Palermo, Italy, you will at once realize that no other woman is so popular and so beloved as their Saint Rosalia. Her image can be seen not only in the church but in many other places. And wherever you find her statue or portrait, you will find beautiful flowers offered to honor her. Rosalia was born in Palermo, Sicily in 1126, from an aristocratic family. Her father was a Count, who claimed to have descended from Charlemagne. When she was of age, her father arranged a suitable marriage for her: a young man from the aristocracy, handsome and educated to match her beauty and social standing. But the young lady refused to accept anyone from the several gentlemen her father presented to her. She had a greater, more important vocation, that of loving and serving the Lord. Instead of getting married, she entered a nearby cloister.

But soon, she found life in the cloister not sufficient for her desires to be intimately in communion with the Lord, so she left and settled herself in a little cave in Pellegrino Mount, which was the property of her father. Tradition says that she was led to the cave by two angels. On the wall of the cave she wrote: “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Monte delle Rose, and Quisquina, had resolved to live in this cave for the love of my Lord Jesus Christ.” Rosalia remained in that cave until she died. She had no contact with anyone and no one knew she had already died. They only had an inkling of her death when she began appearing to help people in need. Centuries later, in 1624, when there was a plague in Palermo, she appeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found and asked that her bones be brought in a procession so she could stop the plague. The hunter found her bones in the cave and brought them to Palermo, had the procession she requested and the plague stopped. A sanctuary was built in the cave where her bones were found and she was venerated as patron saint of Palermo.

Today, she is venerated as the heroine of the province of Sicily. They honor her with a great feast, which a scientist declared as the most beautiful feast in all of Europe. This colorful celebration takes place on the evening of July 14 and St. Rosalia’s relics are paraded around the town, ending in a grand spectacle of fireworks. There is also a tradition of walking from Palermo to Mount Pellegrino where the Sanctuary of St. Rosalia is located. In 1946, the members of the Sons of Divine Providence, a congregation of Orionine Brothers became the custodians of the sanctuary. St. Rosalia is called the “Little Saint.” In Sicilian, she is called “Rusulia.” Internationally, she is invoked in times of plague. From 2020 onward she has been invoked by some citizens of Palermo to protect the city from Covid-19.

Ebanghelyo: Lc 15:1-10

Lumapit kay Hesus ang lahat ng kolektor ng buwis at mga makasalanan para makinig. Kaya nagbulung-bulungan ang mga Pariseo at mga guro ng Batas: “Tinatanggap niyan ang mga makasalanan at nakikisalo sa kanila.” Kaya sinabi ni Hesus ang talinhagang ito sa kanila: “Kung may sandaang tupa ang isa sa inyo at mawala ang isa sa mga ito, hindi baga niya iiwan ang siyamnapu’t siyam sa ilang para hanapin ang nawawala hanggang matagpuan niya ito? At pag natagpuan ito’y masaya niya itong pinapasan sa balikat, at pagdating sa bahay ay tatawagin niya ang mga kaibigan at mga kapitbahay at sasabihin sa kanila: ‘Matuwa kayong kasama ko sapagkat natagpuan ko na ang nawawala kong tupa.’ Sinasabi ko sa inyo: magkakaroon din ng higit na kagalakan sa Langit para sa isang makasalanang nagsisisi kaysa siyamnapu’t siyam na matuwid na di nangangailangan ng pagsisisi. Kung may sampung baryang pilak ang isang babae at nawala ang isa sa mga ito, hindi ba siya magsisindi ng ilaw, magwawalis sa bahay at hahanaping mabuti hanggang matagpuan ito? At pagkakita rito’y tatawagin ang mga kaibigang babae at mga kapitbahay: ‘Matuwa kayong kasama ko sapagkat natagpuan ko ang nawawala kong baryang pilak.’ Sinasabi ko sa inyo na ganito rin sa mga anghel ng Diyos, magkakaroon ng kagalakan para sa isang makasalanang nagsisisi.”

Pagninilay:

Marahil narinig na ninyo ang kasabihang, “God hates the sin but loves the sinner.” Sa ating mga tao, parang ang hirap gawin ito. Kapag nagalit tayo sa pagkakamali ng ating kapwa, binubunton agad natin ang ating galit o paghusga sa taong nagkamali. Mahirap para sa atin ang pahiwalayin ang kanyang pagkakamali sa taong nagkasala.

Tinuturuan tayo ni Jesus na tularan ang kanyang pakikitungo sa tao. Kung tutuusin, lahat ng mga tao sa ebanghelyo, maliban kay Jesus, ay nagkasala. Puno ng pagmamalaki ang mga Pariseo at mga eskriba ukol sa kanilang kabanalan. Nasusuklam sila sa mga publikano at mga makasalanan na lumapit kay Jesus. Ngunit hinarap silang lahat ni Jesus at pinaliwanagan. Hindi niya tinukoy kung sino ang mabuti o masama. Nagkuwento si Hesus para ilarawan sa kanila ang higit na mahalagang bagay: ang kaligayahang nadarama ng Diyos sa tuwing may naligaw ng landas na bumabalik sa kanya, sa tuwing mayroong Nawala at muling natagpuan. Hindi kontento ang pastol kung maiwan man ang siyamnapu’t siyam samantalang nawawala ang isang tupa. Para sa Diyos, hindi niya mabibilang ang kanyang kawan sa siyamnapu’t siyam. Zero pa rin ang tingin niya hanggang may tupang nawawala dahil gayon na lamang ang pag-ibig ng Diyos sa kanyang kawan. Katulad din ng isang barya ng babae na nawawala. Nang matagpuan niya iyon, kailangan niyang magdiwang! Nasisiyahan ang Diyos at nagdiriwang ang langit sa tuwing may isang makasalanang nagsisisi at nagbabago ng lakad sa buhay!

Listen to the Voice of Creation | Word and Songs

God, the author of life made us His best creation. He appointed us stewards of creation and has dominion over it. Now let us ask ourselves, have we been good and responsible stewards of God’s creation?  As we continue to celebrate Season of Creation 2022, we will ponder in this episode, the theme for this year, “Listen to the Voice of Creation”. As followers of Christ from around the globe, we share a common call to care for creation. We are co-creatures, and part of all that God has made. Our wellbeing is interwoven with the wellbeing of the Earth. 

The Season of Creation is the annual Christian celebration to listen and respond together to the cry of Creation: the ecumenical family around the world unites to pray and protect our common home.  The Season “Celebration” begins on September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and ends on October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology beloved by many Christian denominations.  This year we will unite around the theme, “Listen to the Voice of Creation.”  The Psalmist declares, “The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge…their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the Earth, and their words to the end of the world.” (19: 1-4)

Each year, the ecumenical steering committee proposes a theme for the Season of Creation. The theme for 2022 is: Listen to the Voice of Creation.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have become familiar with the concept of being muted during virtual conversations. Often, people using a platform do not have the capacity to unmute themselves. Even more do not even have access to digital platforms, and so their voices are never heard. Many voices are muted in public discourse around climate change and the ethics of Earth-keeping. These are the voices of those who suffer the impacts of climate change. These are the voices of those who hold generational wisdom about how to live gratefully within the limits of the land. These are the voices of a diminishing diversity of more than-human species. It is the voice of the Earth. The 2022 Season of Creation theme raises awareness of our need to listen to the voice of all creation.

During the Season of Creation, our common prayer and action can help us listen for the voices of those who are silenced. In prayer we lament the individuals, communities, species, and ecosystems who are lost, and those whose livelihoods are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. In prayer we center the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. May this 2022 Season of Creation renew our ecumenical unity, renewing and uniting us by our bond of Peace in one Spirit, in our call to care for our common home. And may this season of prayer and action be a time to Listen to the Voice of Creation, so that our lives in words and deeds/ proclaim good news for all the Earth.

Season of Creation Prayer 2022

Creator of All, in this Season of Creation, we pray that you would call us, as from the burning bush, with the sustaining fire of your Spirit. Breathe upon us. Open our ears and move our hearts. Turn us from our inward gaze. Teach us to contemplate your creation, and listen for the voice of each creature declaring your glory. For “faith comes from hearing.” Give us hearts to listen for the good news of your promise to renew the face of the Earth. Enlighten us with the grace to follow the Way of Christ as we learn to walk lightly upon this holy ground. Fill us with the hope to quench the fires of injustice with the light of your healing love that sustains our common home. In the name of the One who came to proclaim good news to all creation, Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Sinabi ni Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad: “Hindi makapamumunga ng masama ang mabuting puno, at ang masamang puno nama’y hindi makapamumunga ng mabuti. Nakikilala ang bawat puno sa bunga nito. Hindi makapipitas ng igos mula sa tinikan ni makaaani ng ubas mula sa dawagan. Naglalabas ang taong mabuti ng mabuting bagay mula sa yaman ng kabutihan sa kanyang puso; ang masama nama’y naglalabas ng masamang bagay mula sa kanyang kasamaan. At umaapaw nga mula sa puso ang sinasabi ng bibig. Bakit pa ninyo ako tinatawag na ‘Panginoon, Panginoon,’ pero hindi ninyo naman tinutupad ang aking sinasabi? Ilalarawan ko sa inyo ang lumalapit sa akin at nakikinig sa aking mga salita at tumutupad nito. May isang taong nagtatayo ng bahay, na humukay ng malalim at sa batuhan inilagay ang mga pundasyon. Pagdating ng baha, hinampas ng agos ang bahay na iyon subalit wala itong lakas para yanigin iyon sapagkat mabuti ang pagkakatatag niyon. At kung may nakikinig ngunit di naman nagsasagawa, matutulad siya sa nagtatayo ng bahay sa ibabaw ng lupa na wala namang pundasyon. Hinampas ito ng agos at kaagad bumagsak. Anong laki ng pagkawasak ng bahay na iyon!”

Pagninilay:

Lahat ng bagay na nilikha ng Diyos ay nagtataglay ng presensya ng Diyos.  Pero alalahanin natin na sa lahat ng mga nilikha, tayong mga tao lamang ang nilikhang kawangis ng Diyos.  Ito ang larawan ng pagkalikha ng Diyos sa atin, kung kaya’t ito ang nais Niyang ipaalala sa atin.  Bunga tayo ng paglikha ng Diyos!  Kung kaya’t ang Diyos ang maituturing na Puno na ating pinagmulan.  Puno na puspos ng pagmamahal, kabutihan at malasakit sa sangnilikha.  Mga kapanalig, totoo na kung ano ang puno ganun din ang bunga.  Suriin natin ngayon ang ating sarili!  Makikita ba sa atin, ang mukha ng Diyos na Mapagmahal, Mapagpatawad, at may Malasakit?  Makikita ba sa paraan ng ating pamumuhay at pakikipagkapwa tao na tunay tayong pinaghaharian ng Diyos?   Nakakalungkot na sa panahon natin ngayon, tila nasasapawan ng kasamaan ang kabutihan, nasasapawan ng kasinungalingan ang katotohanan, at tila ba pera-pera na lang ang umiiral na kalakaran sa lipunan.  Kayang bilhin ng pera ang prinsipyo, paninindigan, at paniniwala ng isang tao.  Pansinin ninyo ang troll farm sa social media, na magpahanggang ngayon patuloy sa pagpapakalat ng kasinungalingan, nagsisiwalat ng mga hate messages, at nambaba-bash sa mga taong hindi nila kaalyado at parehas mag-isip.  Marahil tatanungin natin, meron pa kaya silang sa Diyos? O May takot pa kaya sila sa Diyos?  O tuluyan na nilang tinalikuran ang Diyos at hindi na sila nakukunsensya sa masamang gawain.  Mga kapanalig, dahil sa maling paggamit ng kalayaan, sinisira ng ilan sa atin ang napakagandang mukha na itinatak ng Diyos sa ating pagkatao.  Hindi na tayo nagiging kawangis ng Diyos na Mabuti at mapagmahal. Kusa tayong lumalayo sa Puno na nagbigay buhay at nagpalago sa atin. Magkaganun pa man, hindi tayo sinusukuan ng Diyos.  Nandidyan ang Sakramento ng Kumpisal upang manumbalik tayo sa Kanyang grasya at pagmamahal.  Kapanalig, balikan natin ang ating tunay na dignidad bilang anak ng Diyos, at ulit-uliting parang mantra na “likas akong mabuti… dahil nilikha akong kawangis ng Diyos.”  Sa tulong ng Banal na Espiritung nananahan sa ating puso, makabalik nawa tayo sa natura ng pagkakalikha ng Diyos sa atin.

Sinabi ni Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad ang isang talinhaga: “Puwede nga kayang akayin ng isang bulag ang isa pang bulag? Di ba’t kapwa sila mahuhulog sa kanal? Hindi hihigit sa kanyang guro ang alagad. Magiging katulad ng kanyang guro ang ganap na alagad. Bakit mo tinitingnan ang puwing sa mata ng iyong kapatid? At di mo pansin ang troso sa iyong mata. Paano mo masasabi sa iyong kapatid: ‘Kapatid, pahintulutan mong alisin ko ang puwing sa mata mo,’gayong hindi mo nga makita ang troso sa mata mo? Mapagkunwari! Alisin mo muna ang troso sa mata mo, at saka ka makakakitang mabuti para alisin ang puwing sa mata ng kapatid mo.”

Pagninilay:

Maraming pagkakataon sa ating buhay na hindi natin maiwasan na mapansin o mapuna ang ginagawa ng ibang tao sapagkat ang ating mga mata ay naka disenyo upang makita kung ano ang nasa harapan. Pero hindi ito nararapat na gamitin, upang palaging tingnan o husgahan ang pagkakamali o pagkukulang ng iba, dahil likas sa tao ang magkamali at kahit sa ating mga sarili meron din tayong mga pagkukulang. Sa sikolohiya, meron tayong tinatawag na ‘projection’. Ito ay ang gawi na kung saan nilalagay ng isang tao ang kaniyang mga negatibong katangian o yung mga katangian na ayaw niya sa kaniyang sarili sa ibang tao. Meron ding mga pagkakataon na agad nating napupuna ang negatibong katangian sa ibang tao dahil ito rin ang katangian na meron tayo sa ating sarili ngunit hindi lang natin alam o namamalayan. Matutugunan lamang ang ganitong sitwasyon kung tayo ay makikinig at susunod sa imbitasyon ng ating ebanghelyo ngayon, yan ay sa pamamagitan ng tinatawag na ‘introspection’. Ito ay ang paraan ng pagtitingin at pagsusuri sa ating mga sarili, sa ating kaisipan at sa ating damdamin, kumbaga tinitingnan at sinusuri natin ang ating sarili sa harap ng salamin. Kaya mga kapatid, ayusin muna natin ang ating sarili upang mas matulungan natin ang ibang tao. Alisin muna natin ang puwing sa ating mga mata upang mas makakakita tayo ng mabuti sa pag-alis ng puwing sa mata ng iba.
