Word and Songs | Allowing the Word of God to direct our thoughts and action in this season of LENT and beyond
with Sr Lines Salazar, fsp
The season of Lent invites us to open up our hearts to the Lord who continuously and lovingly reminds us to be a loving neighbors to others. Lent provides us the opportunity to examine ourselves more deeply, to see where we could grow as a person, and to change positively our perspective in life/ in order to become more fully grounded in the truth that is founded on the word of God.
Pope Francis in his Lenten Message for this year reminds us that “regular listening to the word of God makes us open and docile” to the inspiration of His Holy Spirit. Indeed, when we allow the word of God to take root in our hearts, all our thoughts and actions are motivated by the word of God, and thus, doing good and wishing the best for others becomes second nature for us.
During this campaign period leading to the national elections in May, many among us are experiencing bitterness and anger, with some even resorting to character assassination maligning the personhood of others without any basis. It is indeed very sad that this situation should happen to us. Many of us professed to be Bible-reading Christian who go to Church regularly and pray to the same God. And yet, it seems many of us fail to understand the moral values of a true Christian, and to live the demands that it asks of us. It means that wherever we are, whatever we do, all our actions and decisions should be enlightened by the truth. And that truth/ can only come from an understanding that is profoundly influenced by the word of God.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, in its pastoral letter last February 25 called on the faithful to seek the truth amidst the extensive disinformation that is going on and being spread on social media, especially about what happened during the time of Martial Law and EDSA people power. There is a proliferation of “false information and narratives” that does not only seek to manipulate/ what truly happened during those years but also target to discredit certain people.
The bishops said that “the attempt to delete or destroy our collective memory through the seeding of lies and false narratives… is dangerous, for it poisons our collective consciousness and destroys the moral foundations of our institutions. Neglect of truth is detrimental for all of us, for the foundation of a good society and responsible government is the truth. Shall we allow our children and the young to be educated in lies? Can we afford to make lies become the basis of our laws and their implementation? What happens to a family or a society that is not founded on truth?”
Lies told repeatedly eventually takes on a semblance of truth. It is truly alarming that this phenomenon is happening on social media. So many lies are being peddled as “truth.” And it is said that many have chosen to believe these “false narratives”. It may also happen that even members of our own family or close friends believe this “fake news” and are the ones disseminating them.
According to F. Diane Barth, a psychotherapist from New York, people who believe the lies being told to them do so because they “feel vulnerable to allow the truth and its consequences to manifest in [their] lives.” So even if the truth does emerge eventually, these people continue to believe the “lie” to protect themselves from losing “faith in their own ability to make good judgments.”
Truth is one of the many issues that confront us in the upcoming elections. It is also an important value among other values that we should look for in a candidate who is running for public office.
It is our basic right as registered voters to participate in next month’s national election. But when we do so, let us be guided by the truth that is shaped by the word of God.
