Bailey Weirens is a registered dietitian who works at The Emily Program’s Anna Westin House in Minnesota. Bailey believes in an anti-diet approach to body acceptance and looks forward to starting a nutrition blog later in the year.

Bailey describes nutrition as the act or process of being nourished in relation to the body’s dietary needs. She believes nutrition is person-specific, so what works for one person may not work for another. This is why eating disorder treatment centers offer individualized meal plans.

“Let’s Talk Nutrition!” also addresses common health-related questions such as why we need calories and carbs and what macro and micronutrients are. Bailey talks about diet culture, meeting your body’s nutritional needs, and why meal plans are important in eating disorder treatment.

This is the first episode in our new Recovery Series. The Recovery Series aims to share stories of those in eating disorder recovery in hopes of starting conversations, breaking stigmas, and encouraging healing. On this episode, host Claire Holtz sits down with Japanese-American singer-actor Anna Hashizume as she shares her story of healing.

Anna Hashizume is a singer-actor and voice teacher in the Twin Cities. She has her undergraduate degree in music and theater and her Master’s Degree in music. After school, Anna decided to broaden her scope of performing and now does opera, musical theater, and plays. She has a YouTube channel under the name of Anna Miyuki where she strives to create a place where actors and singers can navigate the world of performing without feeling so alone.

On the show, Anna shares how she first developed an eating disorder at 19 and how it changed her life. Anna shares the importance of her family in prompting treatment and how they were a driving force in her recovery.

From starting treatment at Indiana University during the school year to attending The Emily Program during the summers, Anna learned ways to cope with her disordered eating and started developing a more healthy relationship with her food and body.

Today, Anna is in eating disorder recovery and says the best part of recovery is peace of mind. She no longer spends time thinking about food or what she will eat and says that brain space now goes to all of the projects that she loves to pursue. She says this peace of mind allowed her to excel in what she really loves doing—performing and teaching.

This week’s episode features guest Blythe Baird. Blythe is an author, actor, and teaching artist whose work has been featured by Button Poetry, GLAMOUR, Elle, The Huffington Post, Everyday Feminism, and more.

Blythe wrote her first poem when she was just shy of 17 and shortly after, wrote “When the Fat Girl Gets Skinny,” which quickly went viral on YouTube. Blythe performs the poem for us on Peace Meal and discusses what led her to create the popular piece.

Diet culture is an insidious ideology that worships thinness, demonizes those that don’t adhere to the beauty standard, and oppresses those who are not viewed as “healthy.” Hilmar Wagner, a dietitian with a Master’s Degree in Public Health, joins Peace Meal to talk nutrition, diets, and why we’ve been evolutionarily conditioned to be preoccupied with food.

Host Claire Holtz kicks off this month’s episode of Peace Meal by reflecting on the origins of diet culture. From abiding by a doctor’s health advice to losing weight and altering body shape, dieting has dramatically changed and created a system of beliefs referred to as “Diet Culture.”

Hilmar Wagner defines diet culture as a system of beliefs that idolize thinness, promote weight loss, and oppress those who don’t meet the societal standard for beauty. While diet culture was predominately geared towards women, it is now starting to trend towards men as well. With diet culture targeting all individuals, we now see the rise of fad diets started in order to lose weight and change body shape.

According to NEDA, those who engage in moderate dieting are 5x more likely to develop an eating disorder. Hilmar notes that there is nothing wrong or inherently bad about wanting to change your eating habits, but that some individuals are more susceptible to developing an eating disorder. For those at-risk individuals, dieting can be the trigger that leads them to an eating disorder.
