  • Episode 8: The Neurobiology of Eating Disorders
    Episode description:
Accanto Health's Vice President of Communications and Brand, Dr. Jillian Lampert, joins Peace Meal this week to discuss eating disorders and the brain. Dr. Lampert educates listeners on the two experiences of eating and how they play into each type of eating disorder. We wrap up the episode by comparing the brains of those with eating disorders to the brains of individuals who are unaffected by the illnesses.
    —
    Episode show notes:
Dr. Jillian Lampert is the Vice President of Communications and Brand for Accanto Health and the co-founder of the Residential Eating Disorders Consortium. Dr. Lampert has a Master’s degree in nutrition and a Doctorate degree in nutrition and epidemiology. In addition to this, she is also the author of numerous book chapters and articles discussing eating disorders and she regularly speaks nationally about eating disorder related topics.
In this episode, we cover the brain’s “wanting” and “liking” systems and discuss how our experiences differ based on our neurobiology. We discuss an fMRI study that sheds light on how the brain plays into eating and eating disorders. This study found that those with anorexia have a quieter wanting system for food than those without the eating disorder. The study also provides evidence in support of the idea that individuals with binge eating disorder experience a high level of wanting and low level of liking, which results in a high desire to eat but a lower satisfaction upon eating.
By understanding the neurobiology behind eating disorders, Dr. Lampert discusses how we can spot eating disorder risk factors at a young age. We wrap up the episode by discussing the ins and outs of eating disorder recovery and how developing management skills can help individuals in recovery.

  • Episode 6: Let’s Talk Nutrition!
    Episode description:
Dietitian Bailey Weirens joins Peace Meal to discuss the truth behind nutrition and healthy eating. Bailey discusses the importance of calories, why macro and micronutrients are important, and what recovery meal plans are. By advocating for an anti-diet approach to nutrition and promoting body acceptance, Bailey enlightens listeners on the importance of listening to our bodies in order to sustain long-term health and wellbeing.
    —
    Episode show notes:
Bailey Weirens is a registered dietitian who works at The Emily Program’s Anna Westin House in Minnesota. Bailey believes in an anti-diet approach to body acceptance and looks forward to starting a nutrition blog later in the year.
Bailey describes nutrition as the act or process of being nourished in relation to the body’s dietary needs. She believes nutrition is person-specific, so what works for one person may not work for another. This is why eating disorder treatment centers offer individualized meal plans.
“Let’s Talk Nutrition!” also addresses common health-related questions such as why we need calories and carbs and what macro and micronutrients are. Bailey talks about diet culture, meeting your body’s nutritional needs, and why meal plans are important in eating disorder treatment.
Bailey finishes the podcast by advocating for an anti-diet approach to healthy living and the necessity of listening to what our body needs. Her final advice is to be patient—unlearning diet culture and weight stigma is challenging. For those struggling with diet culture or disordered eating, reach out to The Emily Program at 1-888-364-5977 for more information and support.
